Chapter 1: The House on Cormorant Lane
The letter arrived on a Tuesday, which Mira later decided was fitting. Tuesdays had always been the blandest day of the week — no Monday's fresh-start optimism, no Wednesday's hump-day relief, no Friday's electric anticipation. Tuesday was the day nothing happened. Until the Tuesday nothing became everything.
The envelope was cream-colored, heavy stock, the kind that whispered money. Her name and address were written in ink so black it seemed to drink the light. Mira Eldridge, 42 Hawthorn Court, Apt 3B. The return address was a law firm in a town she'd never heard of: Wickham & Sallow, Est. 1901, Millbrook, New York. She almost threw it away, assuming it was a timeshare offer or a class-action settlement involving a blender she'd never owned. But something made her open it. Later, she would wonder if the letter had wanted to be opened.
Inside, the handwriting was spidery and precise, the kind of penmanship taught in schools that no longer existed. It said:
Dear Ms. Eldridge,
It is our duty to inform you that your great-aunt, Theodosia Vance, has passed away and named you the sole beneficiary of her estate, located at 17 Cormorant Lane, Millbrook. No funeral was held, per her explicit instructions. The property and its contents are now yours. Enclosed is the key. We recommend you visit at your earliest convenience. Some matters are best handled in person.

The key was brass, heavy and cold, taped to the bottom of the letter with yellowed cellophane. It was longer than any key Mira had ever seen, with an ornate bow shaped like a bird in flight — a cormorant, she realized later, when she looked it up. The shaft was etched with tiny symbols that weren't quite letters and weren't quite numbers. When she held it to the light, it seemed to glow from within, a faint amber warmth that had no business coming from metal.
She called her mother first.
"Aunt Theodosia?" Her mother's voice crackled through the phone, thin and distant, as though the connection spanned decades instead of miles. "I didn't even know she was still alive. I thought she died when I was a girl. No one talked about her. No one was allowed to."
"Why not?"
A long pause. The refrigerator hummed. A car passed outside. "There was something wrong with her house. I don't know what. I just remember my father saying that the Vance women were different. That the bloodline carried something old. And that some doors shouldn't be opened. Theodosia, he said, had opened them all."
"Old bloodline? What does that even mean?"
"I don't know, Mira. Your grandmother used to talk about birds. Cormorants. She said they were messengers. That when a Vance died, a cormorant would dive into the river and not come up. I thought it was just family superstition." A pause. "But Theodosia lived alone in that house for fifty years, and the town left her alone. A whole town, Mira. They didn't just ignore her. They respected her. Or feared her. I could never tell which."
Mira hung up with more questions than answers. She sat at her kitchen table, the key in her palm, and tried to remember if she'd ever heard the name Theodosia Vance before. She hadn't. Her family was small and scattered — a mother in Florida, a father long gone, no siblings, a handful of cousins she exchanged Christmas cards with but couldn't pick out of a lineup. The idea of a great-aunt, a whole person with a house and a life and apparently a town that feared her, felt like discovering a new continent in her own bloodline.
Her lease was up in three weeks. Her job — data entry for a company that sold artisanal soap — was remote and portable. She had no boyfriend, no cat, no houseplants she hadn't already killed. The universe, it seemed, was handing her a plot twist. She decided to take it.

The drive from Pennsylvania to Millbrook took four hours, winding through increasingly rural roads until the GPS gave up entirely and Mira had to navigate by the printed directions the law firm had sent. The town appeared suddenly, a cluster of white clapboard buildings around a village green that looked like it had been frozen in 1952. A hardware store. A diner called The Blue Spoon. A library with a cupola. A bookshop called The Dusty Cormorant, its window display featuring old leather-bound volumes and a stuffed bird she tried not to stare at. And at the end of Main Street, a gravel road marked by a single wooden sign: Cormorant Lane.
The road was long and tree-shadowed, overhung with oaks so old their branches interlocked overhead like the ceiling of a cathedral. The gravel crunched under her tires. The air grew cooler, damper. She passed four houses, each set far back from the road, each with empty driveways and dark windows. One had wind chimes made of bone. Another had a garden of black roses that turned their heads toward her car as she passed. Summer homes, she told herself. Quirky decoration. But the feeling in her stomach said otherwise.
Number 17 was the last house on the lane, so far back it seemed to be retreating into the forest. It was a Victorian Gothic, three stories of dark wood and peaked roofs, with a wraparound porch sagging in one corner and a turret that rose like a stone finger pointing at the sky. Ivy had claimed the eastern wall, thick and glossy and improbably green for late autumn. The windows were tall and narrow, their glass so old it rippled, distorting the reflections of the trees. On the porch, a single rocking chair moved gently, though there was no wind. And perched on the turret's highest point, motionless as a gargoyle, sat a cormorant. Its dark feathers drank the light. Its eye, even from this distance, was fixed on her.
Mira sat in the car for a long moment, the engine ticking as it cooled. She wasn't scared, exactly. She was something adjacent to scared — wary, alert, the way you feel when you walk into a room and forget why you entered. The house seemed to be waiting for her. Not patiently. Expectantly.
She got out. The gravel crunched under her sneakers. The air smelled of wet leaves and woodsmoke and something else, something floral — roses, maybe, though she saw none growing. The cormorant on the turret didn't move. She climbed the porch steps, each one groaning under her weight, and stood before the front door. It was solid oak, carved with the same cormorant pattern as the key. The bird was diving, wings folded, beak aimed at some unseen fish below. Around it, the wood was dark with age, but the carving itself was smooth, as though it had been touched often. As though generations of hands had traced this same bird.
Mira inserted the key. It slid in easily, the metal warm against her fingers, and turned with a satisfying click that echoed through the house's interior. But when she pushed, the door resisted. She pushed harder. It gave an inch, then two, then swung open with a sound that was less a creak and more a sigh.
The hallway stretched before her, long and narrow, lit by a fanlight above the door. Dust motes swirled in the amber glow. The wallpaper was green, patterned with vines that seemed to shift in her peripheral vision. A staircase curved upward on the left, its banister carved with more birds — cormorants, dozens of them, each one slightly different, as though they were mid-flight in a flock, diving, rising, breaking the surface of an invisible sea. To the right, a doorway led to a sitting room filled with sheet-draped furniture. Straight ahead, the hallway ended at a kitchen door.
And on the hall table, directly in front of her, sat a cup of tea.
Steam rose from it in lazy curls. The tea was the color of amber, clear and golden, with no tea bag, no leaves. Mira touched the cup. It was warm — not hot, but warm, as though it had been poured ten minutes ago. She looked around. The dust on the floor was undisturbed except for her own footprints. The air was still. The house was silent, but it was a listening silence, the kind that had ears. The kind that recognized her.
"Hello?" Her voice sounded small and swallowed. "Is anyone here?"
No answer. But from somewhere deep in the house, maybe the second floor, maybe the third, a floorboard creaked. Once. Then silence again. Then another sound — distant, rhythmic, like wings beating water. Like something diving.
Mira's rational mind offered explanations. A caretaker. A neighbor with a key. A timer-controlled kettle. But the kitchen, when she found it, was cold. The kettle on the stove was bone dry, its interior filmed with dust. The cup on the hall table had not come from this kitchen. It had come from somewhere else.
She returned to the hallway, lifted the cup, and held it to her nose. Honey. Something floral — chamomile, maybe. A hint of lemon. And beneath it, something stranger: the faintest trace of salt water. Of the sea. She thought about drinking it. Her hand trembled slightly. She set it down.
The staircase beckoned. She climbed, each step complaining under her weight, her hand trailing along the banister. The cormorants seemed to watch her pass. Their carved eyes glinted in the low light. At the landing, a window looked out over the front garden, and beneath it stood a small oval mirror in a tarnished gilt frame. Her reflection stared back — tired, wary, auburn hair escaping its ponytail, gray eyes that looked older than twenty-nine.
She was about to turn away when the reflection moved.
Not her own. In the mirror, over her reflected shoulder, the hallway behind her had different wallpaper. Blue. And at the end of that blue hallway, a door was opening.
Mira spun around. The real hallway was empty. Green wallpaper. Closed doors. She turned back to the mirror. The blue hallway was still there, and in it, a figure. Small. Barefoot. A child in a yellow dress, walking toward her. Dark curls. Gray eyes. A face that was unmistakably, impossibly, her own.
The child raised her hand and pressed it to the glass.
Mira ran.
She ran down the stairs, through the hallway, out the front door, and didn't stop until she was in her car with the doors locked, her breath coming in ragged gasps. The house stood before her, unchanged. The rocking chair was still. The windows were dark. The cormorant on the turret was gone. Normal. It was just a house. An old, empty, slightly decrepit house in a strange little town with a bookshop she'd investigate tomorrow.
But the key was warm in her pocket. And in her mind, the image of the child lingered — dark curls, a solemn expression, a hand pressed to the glass as if waiting to be let through. As if she'd been waiting for a very long time.
Mira started the engine. She told herself she would drive back to Pennsylvania, forget the house, forget the inheritance, forget all of it. But she didn't put the car in gear. The sun was setting, painting the sky in shades of rose and gold, and the house on Cormorant Lane glowed in the fading light like an ember that had never quite gone out.
Some doors shouldn't be opened.
But some doors, she was beginning to understand, open whether you want them to or not.
