Chapter 1: The Bride They Rejected
The wedding should have been perfect.
At least, that was what Aria Bennett had believed when she woke up that morning.
The church was decorated with thousands of white roses. Crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead. Soft music echoed through the grand hall as guests filled the seats.
Everything looked like a dream.
Everything except the empty space at the altar where the groom should have been.
Aria glanced at the large clock hanging on the wall.
Ten minutes late.
Then twenty.
Then thirty.
A nervous murmur spread through the crowd.
Her fingers tightened around the bouquet.
“Have you heard from Ethan?” she whispered to her best friend, Lily.
Lily forced a smile.
“Maybe he’s stuck in traffic.”
But her eyes revealed the truth.
She was worried too.
Aria reached for her phone again.
Five missed calls.
No answer.
A knot formed in her stomach.
Something wasn’t right.
Ethan wasn’t careless.
He wasn’t irresponsible.
And he certainly wouldn’t miss his own wedding.
Would he?
The church doors suddenly opened.
Every guest turned toward the entrance.
Hope rushed through Aria’s chest.
Then disappeared.
It wasn’t Ethan.
Instead, a young delivery man hurried inside.
“Miss Aria Bennett?”
Confused, Aria stepped forward.
“I’m Aria.”
The man handed her a small envelope.
“No sender.”
Before she could ask another question, he left.
The church grew silent.
Aria stared at the envelope.
A strange feeling settled in her chest.
Slowly, she opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
The moment she saw it, her world shattered.
Her breath caught.
The photograph showed Ethan.
And standing beside him was Sophia.
Her stepsister.
The two were embracing.
Their foreheads touching.
Their smiles intimate.
Loving.
On the back of the photo were seven words.
He never intended to marry you.
The bouquet slipped from Aria’s hands.
White flowers scattered across the floor.
The church erupted into whispers.
“What happened?”
“Is she okay?”
“Oh my God…”
Aria could no longer hear them.
Her ears rang.
Her chest felt hollow.
This had to be a mistake.
A cruel joke.
Yet deep inside, memories began connecting.
The late-night phone calls.
The sudden business trips.
Sophia’s constant presence.
The pieces fit together too perfectly.
Tears filled her eyes.
But before they could fall, another message arrived on her phone.
A video.
With trembling fingers, she pressed play.
Ethan appeared on the screen.
Behind him was a luxury hotel suite.
And beside him…
Sophia.
The date in the corner was from the previous night.
The night before their wedding.
Aria’s heart broke.
Not because she still hoped the video was fake.
But because she finally understood the truth.
She had never been the woman Ethan loved.
The entire church watched as her expression changed.
Shock.
Pain.
Then silence.
Without a word, Aria turned and walked toward the exit.
The guests called after her.
She ignored them.
The massive church doors opened.
Rain poured from the dark sky.
The cold drops struck her face.
For the first time all day, she could breathe.
She stood alone on the church steps.
Abandoned.
Humiliated.
Rejected.
A bitter laugh escaped her lips.
“What a joke.”
Years of love.
Years of loyalty.
Years of sacrifice.
All wasted.
Headlights suddenly appeared through the rain.
A black luxury sedan rolled to a stop.
The rear door opened.
A tall man stepped out.
Even in the storm, his presence commanded attention.
His black suit was immaculate.
His dark eyes were sharp and unreadable.
Aria recognized him immediately.
Damien Blackwood.
CEO of Blackwood Global.
One of the most powerful men in the country.
A billionaire.
A man rumored to trust no one.
Their eyes met.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Damien looked at the church behind her.
“Looks like I missed the ceremony.”
Aria laughed bitterly.
“You’re not the only one.”
Something flickered across his face.
Amusement.
Then he glanced at the photograph still clutched in her hand.
Understanding dawned in his eyes.
“You found out.”
Aria froze.
“What?”
Damien’s expression remained calm.
Too calm.
As though he already knew something she didn’t.
A chill ran down her spine.
“Found out what?”
Before he could answer, another car screeched into the parking lot.
The door flew open.
Ethan jumped out.
Sophia followed immediately behind him.
Both looked panicked.
Desperate.
As if they had raced there to stop something.
Not the wedding.
Something else.
Sophia’s eyes landed on Damien.
The color drained from her face.
For the first time, Aria noticed genuine fear in her stepsister’s expression.
Fear of Damien.
Why?
Damien stepped forward.
Rain fell heavily between them.
Ethan clenched his fists.
“Stay away from her.”
Damien raised an eyebrow.
“Interesting.”
“What is?”
“The fact that you’re worried about her now.”
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
Sophia looked ready to faint.
Damien’s gaze shifted toward Aria.
Then he said something that stunned everyone.
“Come with me.”
Aria blinked.
“What?”
“If you stay here, you’ll never learn the truth.”
The truth.
Those words struck something deep inside her.
“What truth?”
For the first time, Damien hesitated.
Then he spoke quietly.
“The truth about why this wedding was never supposed to happen.”
Sophia gasped.
Ethan’s face turned pale.
And suddenly Aria realized something terrifying.
Her ruined wedding wasn’t an accident.
It was part of a secret.
A secret everyone seemed to know except her.
