CHAPTER ONE: THE GIRL WHO CAME BACK
The rain had been falling since midnight.
Inside one of those cars, a young woman stared through the window.
Her name was Valentina.
But no one in the city knew her by that name anymore.
For the past ten years, she had lived under another identity, far away from the family that had once owned half the city. She had learned to keep her head down, trust carefully, and never speak about the night her life changed forever.
Today, that was over.
Valentina slowly closed the file resting on her lap.
Inside were photographs, newspaper articles, financial records, and one old family picture.
The photograph showed a smiling man standing beside a little girl.
Her father.
Matteo De Luca.
And the little girl was her.
Valentina touched the photograph with her fingertips.
“I’m coming home, Dad,” she whispered.
The car stopped in front of a tall iron gate.
Beyond it stood the De Luca estate.
For a moment, Valentina could not breathe.
The mansion looked almost exactly as she remembered it. Tall stone walls surrounded the property, while dark windows reflected the gray morning sky. The garden had changed, but the old fountain was still there.
Memories came rushing back.
Her father's warm smile.
Her mother's voice.
Running through the garden as a child.
Then the night everything disappeared.
Valentina forced herself to look away.
She had spent years preparing for this day, but preparation could never silence the fear inside.
“Are you sure?” the driver asked.
She nodded.
“I'm sure.”
The gates opened.
The car moved forward.
Now that she was finally here, she felt something unexpected.
Fear.
Not fear of the family.
Fear of what she might discover.
The car stopped near the entrance.
Valentina stepped out wearing a simple black coat. She carried only one small suitcase.
A young woman approached her from the house.
“Miss?”
Valentina looked at her.
“My name is Sofia. I was told to expect you.”
Valentina studied her carefully.
“Who told you?”
Sofia hesitated.
“Mr. De Luca.”
Valentina's expression hardened.
There were several men who could be called Mr. De Luca now.
Her father was dead.
Her uncle, Lorenzo, had taken control of the family after her disappearance.
That meant Lorenzo knew she was coming.
Or at least someone had told him.
“Take me inside,” Valentina said.
Sofia nodded and led her through the doors.
The moment Valentina entered the mansion, everything felt strangely familiar.
The marble floor.
The enormous staircase.
The crystal chandelier.
Even the painting of her grandfather hanging above the fireplace.
But something was different.
The house no longer felt like home.
It felt like a place that had been waiting for her.
As Valentina walked toward the main hall, voices drifted from the dining room.
She stopped.
One voice belonged to Lorenzo.
She recognized it immediately from the recordings she had secretly collected over the years.
“Everything is settled,” Lorenzo was saying. “The De Luca family will not have any problems.”
Another man replied, “And what about the rumors?”
“What rumors?”
“That Matteo had another heir.”
Silence.
Valentina's heart began beating faster.
Lorenzo finally spoke.
“That story died years ago.”
Valentina's fingers curled around the handle of her suitcase.
Another heir.
They were talking about her.
Sofia looked nervous.
“Miss, perhaps we should—”
“No.”
Valentina stepped forward.
The dining room doors opened.
Three men turned toward her.
Lorenzo De Luca stood at the head of the table.
He was older than Valentina remembered, his hair streaked with gray, but his eyes were exactly the same.
Cold.
Calculating.
Beside him stood two men she did not recognize.
Lorenzo stared at her.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then his face lost its color.
“Who are you?” he asked.
Valentina smiled faintly.
“You really don't recognize me?”
Lorenzo's eyes widened.
One of the men beside him reached for his phone.
“Don't,” Valentina said calmly.
The man froze.
Valentina walked into the room.
“My name is Valentina De Luca.”
The silence that followed felt heavier than thunder.
Lorenzo stared at her as if he had seen a ghost.
“That’s impossible.”
“I know.”
“You died.”
Valentina's smile disappeared.
“No. You simply believed I did.”
Lorenzo took a step backward.
Valentina placed the old family photograph on the table.
“I didn't come here to cause a scene,” she said. “I came because I have questions.”
Lorenzo looked at the photograph.
His expression changed.
“What do you want?”
“My father's truth.”
She paused.
“And my inheritance.”
One of the men laughed nervously.
“You have no idea what you're getting yourself into.”
Valentina turned toward him.
“Maybe not.”
Her eyes moved back to Lorenzo.
“But I know enough to understand that my family has been lying to me for ten years.”
Lorenzo said nothing.
Valentina picked up her suitcase.
“I'll be staying here.”
“You cannot.”
She raised an eyebrow.
“Why?”
“Because this house belongs to me.”
Valentina gave him a calm look.
“Not for long.”
She turned and walked out of the dining room.
Behind her, Lorenzo remained completely still.
Sofia hurried after Valentina.
“Miss, what are you planning?”
Valentina stopped at the bottom of the staircase.
She looked up at the portrait of her father.
“I’m going to find out who betrayed him.”
“And then?”
Valentina's eyes hardened.
“Then I'm taking back what belongs to me.”
Upstairs, behind a closed door, someone watched her through a security monitor.
A man dressed entirely in black stood with his arms crossed.
He had been expecting her.
He looked at the screen for a long moment before making a phone call.
“She’s here,” he said.
A pause followed.
Then he added quietly,
“And she looks nothing like the frightened girl they told us about.”
He ended the call.
Downstairs, Valentina stood beneath her father's portrait, unaware that her return had already begun a chain of events that would change the De Luca family forever.
She had come home to find the truth.
But the truth was coming for her too.
