Chapter 001: The Furnace Boy and the Leaking Bronze Cauldron Episode
"BANG!"
The rotting wooden door shattered under a violent kick, sending splinters flying as drafty winds howling with pungent furnace ash surged into the chamber.
"Gu Qingxuan! You worthless, short-lived pill slave, get your a*s out here right now!"
A shrill, screeching voice tore through the dead silence of the alchemy room. A greasy-faced, triangular-eyed middle-aged man dressed in a gaudy satin Taoist robe stepped over the broken threshold, his jowls quivering with malice. It was none other than the Outer Affairs Manager of Danxia Peak—Zhao Dezhu, infamously known among the servants as Manager Zhao "The Skin-Flayer."
Behind him loomed his hulking thug, Zhang San. The moment Zhang San entered, he kicked out maliciously, smashing the ceramic jars of discarded medicinal dregs neatly stacked in the corner into smithereens.
CRASH!
Dark brown sediment and jagged shards scattered across the stone floor, instantly filling the dilapidated room with an acrid, burnt stench.
"Manager Zhao, what has caused you such anger?"
From behind the crumbling remnants of a brick furnace, a slender figure slowly rose to his feet.
Gu Qingxuan was clad in a washed-out, pale azure hemp robe, his posture standing straight and unyielding like green bamboo. Although his complexion was slightly pale from years of inhaling caustic smoke, his eyes were remarkably clear and profound—like an ancient, unrippled well that showed not the slightest trace of panic.
"What has caused me anger? I should be asking you that!" Manager Zhao pointed an accusing finger at Gu Qingxuan's nose, spit flying in every direction. "Three hundred portions of Qi Gathering Powder were allocated to this rundown Room 'C' this month, and today is the absolute deadline for tribute submission! The senior brothers in the inventory hall have already urged me three times! Where is your quota? I haven't seen a single speck of dust from you!"
Zhang San crossed his beefy arms and sneered, eyeing Gu Qingxuan with contempt. "Manager Zhao, this kid has a five-element trash spiritual root. Even after three years in the sect, he's merely a pathetic first-layer Qi Refining waste. The subterranean fire vein connected to this wretched shack was drained dry by the Inner Sect three months ago anyway. What could he possibly use to concoct medicine? In my eyes, he's just slacking off and begging for death!"
Manager Zhao let out a sinister laugh. From his waist, he unhooked a thick black iron chain lined with vicious barbed hooks and slammed it heavily onto the cracked stone desk, producing an ear-piercing metallic ring.
"Gu Qingxuan, by sect law, any servant pill-boy who fails to pay tribute for three consecutive months shall have his meager cultivation crippled, his legs shattered, and be tossed into the Myriad Snake Pit behind the mountain to feed the vipers!" Greed and cruelty flickered in Manager Zhao's eyes. "Don't say I don't care for fellow sect brethren. I'll grant you a final grace period of three days! If you fail to deliver ten portions of superior-grade Qi Gathering Powder within three days to make up for your deficit, don't blame me for ripping out your trash spiritual roots and sending you to serve the serpents!"
"Ten portions of superior-grade Qi Gathering Powder?"
Gu Qingxuan lowered his eyelids slightly, his demeanor entirely unruffled.
Ordinary servants could barely scrape together a single mid-grade powder after three months of hard labor, even with functional subterranean fire. For Zhao the Skin-Flayer to demand ten superior-grade portions out of nowhere was nothing more than an excuse. He had long set his greedy eyes on the dying spiritual spring eye behind this shack, intending to force the previous owner to death so he could seize the land and flip it to some wealthy clan disciple for a fortune.
"What? You think that's too much?" Manager Zhao sneered menacingly, taking a step closer. "Either deliver the medicine, or deliver your life! Zhang San, let's go. Three days from now, at the hour of the Dragon, I will personally come to collect your corpse!"
The thug Zhang San spat heavily onto the ground and followed Zhao out, their arrogant laughter echoing into the distance.
Wood shavings swirled in the morning draft, and the surrounding courtyard sank back into silence. Behind the window cracks of neighboring shacks, several pairs of servant eyes retreated in fearful numbness. In the brutal hierarchy of the cultivation world's lower tier, servant lives were as cheap as weeds; a pill-boy who died before his furnace today was merely a handful of yellow earth tomorrow.
Gu Qingxuan remained calm, not even glancing at the broken pottery on the floor. He walked over to the corner, picked up a worn bamboo broom, and with measured, steady movements, swept the ceramic shards and charred dregs into an orderly pile.
Calm, orderly, without a hint of youthful impetuousness or despair.
Three days ago, he had awakened from an Earthly dream to find himself in this body—an orphaned furnace-tending boy at the lowest rung of Lingjian Sect’s Danxia Peak. The original host had been tormented day and night by caustic fire toxins, ultimately dying of terror and exhaustion when the subterranean fire vein died out and tribute became impossible.
Once the room was swept clean, Gu Qingxuan bolted the broken door and walked to the center of the meditation room.
There, sitting alone on the flagstones, was a cracked bronze cauldron.
It was barely three inches square, mottled and weathered with age. Its belly was covered in hairline fractures, one of its three tripod legs was missing a chunk, and a thick layer of soot coated its surface. In the eyes of any sect alchemist, this was nothing more than scrap metal.
Yet, as Gu Qingxuan brushed away the ash, his eyes caught the faint, subtle outline of a Taiji Yin-Yang Twin Fish engraving etched onto its surface. A profound spark of Taoist insight flickered in his gaze.
"The world fights tooth and nail for the fiercest subterranean flames and exotic blazes, completely ignorant of the fact that Ultimate Yang is born from Extreme Yin. The true mystery of Heaven lies hidden in plain sight."
In his past life, he had immersed himself in ancient Taoist scriptures and understood the cyclical generation of Yin and Yang. The so-called "Exotic Flames" of the cultivation world were mostly harvested from toxic volcanic vents or beast cores. Though furious and destructive, they were riddled with chaotic impurities, burning the user's meridians and slashing their lifespan. Ancient cultivation clans like the Blazing Heaven Divine Palace used these flames to establish ironclad monopolies, selling exorbitant Fire Jade to e*****e rogue cultivators—a truly absurd scam.
Night fell, and all went still.
As darkness deepened, the chill within the room grew piercing, frosting the cracks in the masonry.
Gu Qingxuan sat cross-legged upon a worn straw mat, his eyes gently closed as his meager first-layer Qi Refining spiritual energy circulated quietly. He did not rush to k****e a fire. Instead, he emptied his mind completely, listening only to the rustling of bamboo leaves outside and the gentle dripping of dew from the eaves.
Brewing spring water beneath pines to temper stone marrow;
Carrying the sun within one's sleeve to illuminate the celestial altar.
When the first pale sliver of dawn tore through the eastern horizon, at the exact moment where the long night met the newborn day, Gu Qingxuan opened his eyes.
Moving with absolute precision, he reached for a white jade spoon on the desk, cracked open the wooden window, and extended the spoon toward the mossy edge of the eaves.
Drip.
A crystal-clear dewdrop, having absorbed the pure, chilling Lunar Yin energy of the entire night, rolled off the roof tile and landed flawlessly into the jade spoon.
With a slight flick of his wrist, Gu Qingxuan tipped the dewdrop into the shallow indentation on the left side of the bronze cauldron—the Kan (Water) position.
Water represents Extreme Yin; Kan receives Water.
The moment the morning dew settled into the cauldron, a beam of pale purple dawn light pierced through the broken window paper from the rising sun across the horizon. Like a golden needle, it slanted across the room and struck the right indentation of the bronze cauldron—the Li (Fire) position!
Fire represents Ultimate Yang; Li receives Fire.
"Take the center of Water to ignite the hidden fire of Heaven!"
Gu Qingxuan chanted a primordial Taoist mantra under his breath, his hands rapidly weaving an ancient hand seal. His thread of spiritual energy acted as a fuse, activating the ancient cauldron.
HUMMM—
The silent, dormant bronze cauldron suddenly let out an almost imperceptible celestial chime!
Within the square inches of the cauldron's belly, the pure chilling water of the Kan position and the scorching solar light of the Li position were violently drawn together by the Taiji Twin Fish engraving, spinning, compressing, and colliding at an unfathomable velocity!
Extreme Yin births Yang; Extreme Yang births the Primordial Spark!
BOOM!
A muffled thud, like the first clap of thunder at the dawn of creation, echoed softly within the bronze vessel.
There was no billowing black smoke. There was no acrid sulfur or toxic furnace gas. A tiny flame, no larger than a soybean and as translucent as molten imperial gold, emerged out of thin air in the exact center of the cauldron!
The tiny flame danced quietly. It required no firewood and consumed no vital blood. Its temperature shifted with a single thought from Gu Qingxuan.
CHIRP—!
A faint, tender, yet undeniably majestic cry of a primordial celestial bird echoed from the spatial void within the vessel.
A few blackened medicinal dregs left over from days past immediately vaporized upon contact with this pure golden dawn flame, leaving behind only a crystal-clear puddle of spiritual nectar that shimmered with nine-colored radiance.
Gu Qingxuan extended his index finger. As if possessing sentient awareness, the golden flame drifted up and rested gently on his fingertip—warm and soothing as polished jade, without burning his skin in the slightest.
He looked at the primordial sun flame dancing on his finger, then at the pristine, flawless medicinal nectar inside the cauldron. A long-lost, composed smile surfaced upon his calm face.
"Princes and lords wage war for toxic flames, while a mountain boy brews tea with wild dew."
"Manager Zhao... in three days' time, I wonder if you will be able to stomach this play."
