Chapter 1: Shadows at the Obsidian Lounge
🤍SOFIA’S POV
The pen scratches fast across the back of a used receipt, ink bleeding soft grey lines into the thin paper. I draw to breathe — always have. When the noise gets too loud, when the yelling rings in my ears, when I feel like I’m shrinking right out of my own skin… I sketch. Tonight I’m drawing the curve of the high ceiling above the bar, the glow of chandeliers turning dark glass into something pretty, the shape of shadows that stretch long and safe along the walls.
My hands are always cold. Always. I rub them together under the counter, my sleeves pulled down low, tight around my wrists — covering the faint, old scars I never let anyone see. I’m thin, too thin; my uniform hangs loose on shoulders that never had enough meat on them, bones sticking out like broken branches. Eighteen years old and I look like I’m still twelve. Fragile. Easy to break. Easy to use.
“Work harder, bring us more money — you owe us everything.”
Their voices ring in my head even when they aren’t here. Carlo and Gina. Mum and Dad. Two people who never wanted me, never fed me right, never held me — only ever held out their hands and demanded every penny I earned, every scrap I had. I took this job at The Obsidian Lounge three months ago because it paid better than anything else. I didn’t ask questions. I didn’t care who owned it. I just needed cash to pay their debts, keep them quiet, keep them from coming to find me… or so I thought.
I glance up toward the VIP balcony high above the floor. It’s dim up there, mostly hidden behind heavy velvet curtains — but I’ve felt eyes on me for weeks now. Heavy, dark, unblinking attention. Every night I work, that gaze stays fixed, like I’m something being studied, weighed, claimed before I even know I’m being looked at. It makes my stomach twist tight — half fear, half something I don’t have a name for. He never comes down. Never orders anything directly. Just… watches.
I tuck my little drawing into my apron pocket, smooth it down, and force a small, polite smile for the next customer. I’m good at smiling when I don’t feel it. I’ve had years of practice.
Then the front doors slam open so hard the glass rattles — and my blood runs cold.
There they are. Carlo and Gina. Drunk, twitchy, eyes wild and greedy. They don’t look at me like parents. They look at me like a wallet with legs.
“Sofia! Where’s the money? We need it now — don’t you dare hide it from us!” Carlo bellows, loud enough for the whole room to turn and stare. My hands start shaking so bad I almost drop the glass I’m holding. I press my back hard against the counter, shrinking smaller, pulling my sleeves down tighter. I knew this would happen. I knew they’d follow me here.
🖤DOMINIC’S POV
I lean against the railing of the VIP balcony, one hand curled loosely around a crystal glass, the other resting over the family crest ring on my finger. Below me, the room runs exactly how I want it — orderly, profitable, quiet. But I’m not watching the business. I’m watching her.
Sofia Marco. Eighteen years old, slight as a reed, pale as moonlight. I’ve had my eyes on her for weeks now. Watched her slip little scraps of paper out of her pocket and draw whenever she thinks no one’s looking. Seen the way she flinches when someone raises their voice, the way she always keeps her sleeves pulled long and low, the way she smiles for strangers but her eyes never, ever light up. She works every shift, takes every extra hour, never complains — and every single penny she earns vanishes into thin air.
I know everything about her. I know who her parents are, what they are — junkies, leeches, worthless trash who’ve spent her whole life bleeding her dry. I know what they’ve done to her. I know why she’s so thin, why she carries that quiet, exhausted sadness like a second skin. And every time I watch her — so small, so careful, so alone — something dark and hungry wakes up inside me.
She is mine. I decided that weeks ago. She just doesn’t know it yet.
My men think I’m interested because she’s pretty. They’re wrong. I’m interested because she’s everything I don’t usually touch — innocent, broken, good — and because she’s been treated like garbage her whole life. And I am going to be the one who changes every single thing about that.
Tonight, the game shifts.
I see them burst through the doors — Carlo and Gina Marco — loud, messy, desperate. I see Sofia freeze. See her hands shake. See her shrink back like a child waiting to be hit.
Rage flares hot and sharp in my chest, cold and deadly at the same time. No one touches what belongs to me. No one hurts her. Not them, not anyone.
I set my glass down slow and deliberate. Straighten my jacket — tailored black wool, sharp lines, everything about me built to command fear and obedience.
“Mateo,” I murmur low, not turning my head. “Clear the path. Make sure no one interferes. And have the car ready.”
Silence is his only answer — he already knows.
I push off the railing and start down the stairs, moving slow, steady, like a predator stepping out of the dark. Every step I take brings me closer. Tonight I stop watching. Tonight I step into the light. Tonight I make sure she knows exactly who owns this place… and exactly who owns her.
By the time I reach the main floor, heads are already bowing. People step aside like the Red Sea parting. They know who I am. They know what I am. Only Sofia hasn’t looked up yet — still pressed against the bar, trembling, while her parents shout and demand and threaten.
I stop right beside her counter. Close enough that she’d feel the heat coming off me. Close enough that I can smell her — vanilla, soap, something soft and sweet. Close enough that I can see the faint, terrified way her breath hitches.
“Problem here?” My voice is low, deep, smooth as velvet and sharp as a blade — loud enough for them to hear, quiet enough that it feels like a secret just for her.
Carlo and Gina spin around, mouths open to yell — then they see me. And instantly, the colour drains right out of their faces. They know who I am. Everyone does.
But Sofia… Sofia finally lifts her head. And those big, beautiful hazel eyes lock onto mine.
And in that moment, everything changes.
