Karla stood in front of the mirror, smoothing down the hem of her casual lavender blouse . It was the most effort she had put into an outfit in weeks — not too dressy , but still thoughtful . She tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear , stared at herself a moment longer , then laughed softly under her breath . ** “ Relax , ” ** she told her reflection . ** “ It’s just a fair .” ** But it wasn’t * just * a fair. It was time with * him * . Time she wasn’t sure she’d ever get again . She checked her phone . 5:02 PM . Christopher : I’m already here . By the ticket booth . Wearing my usual charm and a black hoodie . She smiled , heart skipping . She grabbed her sling bag and rushed out , texting back a quick : Karla : On my way . Don’t leave without me or I’ll haunt your lectures forever . --- . . . . . The fairgrounds glowed in soft orange light as the sun sank low behind the distant hills . Karla spotted him leaning casually near the entrance , one hand in his pocket , phone in the other . Even in something as simple as jeans and a hoodie , he looked effortlessly magnetic . He glanced up , and their eyes met . For a second , the noise around them — the kids screaming from the rides , vendors calling out deals, the squeals of a Ferris wheel — blurred into background . “ You made it , ” he said, smiling, eyes flicking briefly over her face and hair . “ Lavender suits you . ” Karla tried not to grin too widely . “ You don’t look too bad yourself . For someone who’s a walking student-crush cliché . ” Christopher laughed . “ Careful . That almost sounded like a compliment . ” “ Maybe it was . ” They entered the fair , blending into the chaos . They tried rigged games and shared overly sweet lemonade . Karla laughed so hard at a clown-on-stilts show that Christopher snapped a photo of her mid-laughter without asking . “ Evidence you actually enjoy life , ” he teased . At the Ferris wheel , she hesitated . “ You scared ? ” he asked . “ Of heights ? No . Of getting stuck with you up there ? Maybe . ” “ Wow . The slander . ” They climbed in , the carriage slowly rising into the sky . The fair stretched below them in ribbons of color and noise . Karla leaned back and inhaled the breeze , her shoulder just barely brushing his . “ You needed this , ” he said quietly . She glanced at him . “ So did you . ” He didn’t respond right away . Just looked out over the view . “ You ever wish things were simpler ? ” he asked . “ All the time , ” she replied . “I used to think feelings were just distractions . But now… I don’t know .” He looked down, then met her gaze . “ You complicate things , Karla . ” She froze. “Is that a bad thing?” “No,” he said softly. “That’s the problem.” Their eyes locked, tension hanging in the air between them. But just as the moment felt close to shifting, the ride jerked downward and the moment broke. --- Later, they stood near the edge of the fair where the crowd thinned. Karla sipped on cotton candy ice cream as Christopher watched people dart between food stalls. “So,” he said, “what happens now?” She swallowed. “I have holidays. Going home in two days.” “And I’ve got lectures with the juniors,” he said, tone carefully neutral. “You’ll be their new mystery professor.” He laughed under his breath. “Don’t start another rumor.” A pause. Karla looked up at him. “Will we talk after this?” His smile faded slightly. “I don’t know.” Her heart tightened. He added, “It’s not that I don’t want to. But this—whatever this is—it’s always walking on a line. I’ve broken someone before, Karla. I don’t want to break you too.” “You think I’m fragile?” she challenged. “No,” he said. “I think you’re the first person who ever made me want to be better.” Her breath caught. “But I still don’t know how to be that version of myself,” he finished. They stood in silence as the fair continued in the distance, oblivious. Then he checked his watch. “I should probably go. Rounds early tomorrow.” Karla nodded slowly, though every part of her wanted to ask him to stay just a little longer. They walked back toward the exit. As they reached her rideshare pickup point, he turned to her. “ Thanks for today , ” he said . “ You made me forget a lot of things I didn’t realize I was carrying . ” “ Same , ” she said quietly. He hesitated , then leaned down and kissed her on the forehead . A slow, lingering gesture that said more than he dared put into words . “ Take care of yourself , ” he said . “ You too, Professor Hale . ” With a final glance , he walked away . Karla stood there long after he was gone, the glow of the fair fading behind her , her heart aching in a way both sweet and sad . She had gotten what she’d wished for . One day . Just them . And now, it was over . --- . . . . .
