“So where did the money come from that I’ve been living off of since college?”
“SciTech’s research and development budget. That’s the same branch that pays Marie’s salary, but I doubt she knows it.”
“We should tell her.”
“Why? She’s happy. Why mess with her reality?”
“What they have her doing, it’s dangerous.”
Lara rolled her eyes like an exasperated teenager. “Dana, look at it from a different perspective. Marie’s abilities are growing.”
“Yes.”
“Slowly, though. They’re developing with less trauma than you and I have been through, even though she’s been placed at risk. Now think about how much money SciTech has invested in us. Do you think Marie’s life is really in danger?”
I blinked. Would Thomas really risk someone as valuable as Marie? Maybe her assignments only seemed dangerous
