Chapter 10

The silence was broken by Elena's soft statement, "There are others." "Other locations where the void's influence may be expanding and the veil is thin." Kaelen nodded grimly as he attended to a cut on his arm. "An 'awakening' was mentioned by Zephyr. He wasn't concentrating on this one location alone. Ever the practical one, Bram glanced at Elena. "What are our next steps? "Do you follow the whispers?" Closed-eyed, Elena concentrated on the subtle pull within herself, a resonance with the earth's deep currents and Lyra's starpetal pendant. "The next anchor... It seems...far away. In the direction of the lowering sun, across the mortal world. An ancient site of power connected to the tides, where the land meets the boundless water. They would have to travel a long and difficult way west, passing through uncharted territory and possibly encountering new threats. However, the knowledge that Zephyr was still at large and the urgency of the Ancient Ones' warnings motivated them to continue. Prior to their departure from the Twilight Weald, a figure appeared out of the darkness, its shape supple and changing in the never-ending twilight. It was Rhys, his sage eyes brimming with appreciation and worry. With a low murmur, he said, "You did well, star-fallen." Tonight, the Weald breathes more easily. However, the danger still exists. A smooth, grey stone with swirling patterns etched on it was presented to Elena. "A Waystone is this." In other locations where the veil is thin, it will resonate and direct you to the remaining anchors. It is clung to by the Ancient Ones' echoes. Elena took the Waystone in her hand, its cool surface humming softly. There was a faint connection between her and it, a feeling of invisible paths. “Watch out, Elena,” Rhys went on. Now that he has accepted the power of the void, Zephyr follows a darker path. In an effort to speed up the awakening, he will try to weaken the last anchors. You have to get there before he gets there. With Rhys's approval and the Waystone's help, Elena, Kaelen, and Bram headed west. The terrain gradually changed as they went, the eternal twilight giving way to the usual cycle of day and night, but the marks of the oncoming darkness were still visible in blighted spots and eerily silent forests. Every now and then, a dim glow flickered through the Waystone, leading them to areas where the veil was thin or where remnants of the energies of the emptiness remained. These places often presented unique hazards of their own, including pockets of crazed animals, oddly still landscapes, and even desperate individuals drawn to the tumultuous energies. People are drawn to chaotic energies. In one such location, a desolate moor shrouded in an endless mist, they encountered a group of mortals who had been affected by the void's influence. They spoke in broken whispers of a "new dawn" and a "coming darkness," and their eyes had a vacant, eerie gleam. Zephyr's words reverberated chillingly in Elena's mind as she realized the void's influence extended beyond its immediate servants. The encounter was a stark reminder of their enemy's dexterity, despite their ability to elude the void-touched mortals. As they moved west, the earth leveled out and the woods gave way to expansive plains that extended to the horizon. The Waystone beat faster and faster, leading them to the far-off glimmer of the sea. Weeks of travel later, they arrived at the coast. The sea roared and the cliffs rose, and the waves screamed rhythmically on the old stone. Here the air felt different, full of a primordial force, and the ebb and flow of the tides physically symbolized the earth's great strength. They followed the Waystone to a secret cove where a massive sea stack, its top obscured by mist, rose from the fierce waters. The second anchor point, its summit, pulsed with a swirling vortex of deep blue energy. The raw power of the ocean hummed through the surrounding air. However, they weren't by themselves. Zephyr stood on top of the sea stack, silhouetted against the fading sun. Around him, the tainted energy was stronger now, whirling with black tendrils that appeared to draw strength from the roiling ocean. The same sickly green light Elena had seen in the ruined spire pulsed on the surface of a twisted obsidian shard he held high. His triumphant voice reverberated over the roaring waves, "You are too late, Elena." "The tide has shifted. Weakening has started. He plunged the shard of obsidian into the blue vortex. A shock of tainted energy swept through the anchor point, its sickly green-tinged pure blue light flickering violently. An underlying sense of instability permeated the air as the sea around the sea stack churned more violently. Increasingly, the Ancient Ones' whispers became cries of alarm rather than merely warnings. It was getting tighter in the void's grasp. At the edge of the limitless water, the struggle for the second anchor had started, and the stakes were higher than ever. Elena felt a chill of cold fear as she saw Zephyr plunge the obsidian shard into the azure vortex. Once a ray of unadulterated oceanic energy, the anchor point now flickered wildly, tainted by a sickly green corruption that reflected the blight they had previously battled. The air itself crackled with unsteadiness, and the roar of the breaking waves seemed to grow louder, reflecting the chaos inside the anchor. "No!" Elena sobbed as she clambered down the rocky slope in search of the secret cove. A frantic warning, the Waystone pulsed wildly in her hand. Zephyr, sitting on the sea stack, laughed triumphantly, but the wind and the breaking waves sucked it away. "The anchors weaken, Elena! The prison has been demolished! Soon, the true power will rise from the abyss! Shadow Weavers emerged around the foot of the sea stack, their forms more flexible and menacing near the rushing water, as though they were drawn to its chaotic energy for strength. They advanced at an unsettling pace, their violet eyes fixed on Elena and her companions. "He is corrupting the anchor!" Bram and Kaelen were right behind her as Elena cried out to them. "We have to stop him!" Kaelen grimaced and drew his dagger. Reaching him will not be easy. The sea stack is surrounded by humans.
