Chapter 9

1019 Words
Elena concentrated all of her energy on the whirling whirlpool of light. She could feel the faint pull of the encroaching emptiness, the subtle tremors of instability, even though it pulsed with a gentle rhythm. Zephyr and his army posed a serious threat, but she knew that strengthening this anchor was crucial. "Elena, you can't hope to stop the inevitable," Zephyr growled, releasing bursts of twisted energy. They hit the old tree, and like dying embers, glowing moss fell. The status quo is disintegrating. There is an upcoming era of unadulterated power. With shields of woven vines and hardened earth, Elena ducked his blows, her staff's green energy battling his tainted light. The untamed might of the Twilight Weald appeared to react to. "You have no 'pure power, Zephyr!'" Elena shot back, using Lyra's pendant to channel the anchor point's colorful energy. From her a surge of pure, starlight-infused energy surged, driving the encroaching shadows back and making the Shadow Weavers flinch. The ethereal glow of the anchor point intensified momentarily as the pure light resonated with it. A slight resistance to the pull of the void was evident to Elena, a strengthening. Zephyr became enraged and focused entirely on Elena. The concentrated blast of corrupted energy he released threatened to devour her, a swirling vortex of darkness. In response to his assault, Elena used a burst of earth magic, and the old tree behind her groaned as its energy poured into her staff. Zephyr's attack was halted by a wall of thick bark and twisted roots that rose up out of the ground. The twilight forest trembled as the impact rocked the clearing. Kaelen and Bram fought hard against the Shadow Weavers while Elena battled Zephyr. It was challenging to follow the Weald's shadowy shapes in the low light, but Bram's strength and Kaelen's agility kept them at bay. But they appeared innumerable, continually emerging from the prevailing darkness. "We can't keep them away forever, Elena!" Kaelen screamed as she barely avoided a dark claw. Elena was aware that time was running out. They were being overpowered, and the anchor point needed reinforcement immediately. She had to get past Zephyr's barriers. Elena unleashed a torrent of pure fire, using the elemental power that Ignis had given her in her staff. Zephyr was forced to cover his face as the Shadow Weavers were pushed back by the swirling vortex of flames. The pure fire appeared to cauterize the corrupted energy clinging to the Weald, but the ancient tree surrounding them hissed as the flames licked its bark. Elena took advantage of the brief diversion and gave the anchor point her whole attention. She created a protective matrix around the swirling vortex of light by channeling the energies of the earth and the fading starlight inside herself. The light grew brighter, harder, a ray of unadulterated energy that drove the approaching darkness away. Zephyr saw what she was doing and roared in frustration. "No! You can't reverse what has already begun! He gathered the rest of the Shadow Weavers around him, their bodies fusing into one giant mass of shadow. Shadowy claws swung toward the anchor point as the merged Shadow Weaver lunged. The combined energies of fire, earth, and starlight glowed on Elena's staff as she stood before it, exhausted but determined. With a last burst of energy, she exclaimed, "This world will not fall to the void!" With the impact of a collapsing star, the three energies collided and struck the enormous Shadow Weaver. The dark thing let out a cry, and its shape vanished into slivers of shadow that vanished into the dusk. Weakened by the loss of his Shadow Weavers, Zephyr stumbled back. Around him, the tainted energy wavered wildly. With a mixture of resentment and a growing awareness of his failure, he gazed at Elena. His voice was hardly more than a whisper as he hissed, "Star-fallen, this is not over." "The emptiness is hungry. It will also be fed. Zephyr gave one last evil glare and vanished into the Twilight Weald's darkness, disappearing as quietly as he had come. With the exception of the soft pulsing of the reinforced anchor point, the clearing became quiet. The oppressive gloom was pushed back by the ethereal light, which now glowed with renewed strength. A tenuous sense of calm appeared to take the place of the Weald's melancholy cries. Tired and bruised, Kaelen and Bram came up to Elena. "Is this over?" With a hoarse voice, Kaelen asked. Elena gazed at the reinforced anchor point, its light a ray of hope in the never-ending dusk. “Maybe for the time being. The Ancient Ones' whispers, however, mentioned more anchors and threats, and Zephyr is still out there. They'd defended the Twilight Weald, a place of natural permeability and delicate balance. The conflict had served as a sharp reminder of the void's strength and the perseverance of its attendants. It was far from the end of their journey. The battle to defend her new home and the heavenly realm had only just begun, Elena realized as the echoes of the old conflict reverberated throughout the universe. Even after embracing the twilight, the shadow's hold persisted as a warning of more darkness to come. In the Twilight Weald, the immediate threat had been neutralized, and the first anchor point had been strengthened against the looming emptiness. The lingering anxiety of Zephyr's escape and the menacing murmurs of the Ancient Ones swiftly eclipsed the tenuous sense of relief that briefly enveloped Elena, Kaelen, and Bram. They lay down in the restored clearing, the old tree glowing ethereally in the anchor point's pure light. The surrounding twilight appeared less oppressive, and the twisted creatures that had been avoiding the area now had a stronger sense of protection. Elena concentrated her senses, scanning the ground and the faint echoes of heaven. Although they were less frequent now, the Ancient Ones' murmurs were still audible, a faint undercurrent of caution. They mentioned other anchor points that were dispersed throughout both realms and were each essential locks on the ancient prison of the Voidborn.
