Nothing about Tom’s actions or what he said bespoke itself of criticism or disdain for the fire fighters. I did see the fire captain shaking his head when Tom put the small item into an evidence bag., Before we walked away, the fire captain said, “I’m sorry Tom, we had no idea there was evidence in the burned up stuff.”
“No problem, Captain. I’m not upset in the least. Very few ever see the results of a bombing. The residue, the burned-up detritus often contains items of evidence. Unless you are trained to look for them, well most often it happens just as it has today. Thanks for your comment though. It leads me to suggest this might be something for an interdepartmental memo. This bombing might well lead to others. The rest of the department might need the information.”
