Bella pov
“Tell me something, if I were to shout for help right now? Who do you think Hunter would rush to first?”
Vivian asked with a smirk but it couldn't hide the malice painted all over her face.
I tensed, my stomach churning.
I watched with horror as she grabbed my hand and pulled me forward slightly then released it.
Vivian let out a piercing scream as she rolled down the stairs, slumping down with a thud.
Gasps and ripples filmed the room as the whole hall went completely silent.
Everything happened so fast yet in my mind, it played like a move in slow motion.
“ Vivian!” Hunter screamed, the wine glass he was holding earlier smashing on the floor as he rushed to her.
He gathered her in his arms, his hands cradling her like the treasure she was.
Blood oozed from a cut Vivian sustained from the fall.
“ Are you okay?” Hunter asked with a surprising gentleness.
Vivian shook her head, a miserable look on her face.
She was faking it, buying Hunter’s sympathy.
I stood at the top of the stairs, too shocked to move or say anything.
Slowly, Hunter's gaze lifted and what I saw in those dark eyes made me step back involuntarily.
Hatred and undisguised disgust.
“ How dare you harm my Luna?” Hunter growled, his Alpha power rolling into me in waves and making my head ache.
I opened my mouth to say something, to say that I didn't push Vivian, that she rolled down on her own but Vivian beat me to it.
“ Hunter, don't blame Bella. She didn't mean to.” She cried looking lost and broken.
To others, it might have sounded like she was pleading for me. To me, it was clear what she was doing — fanning the flames.
“ She did it on purpose!” Hunter growled.
The pack members watched, some with pity, others with hatred.
The woman bleeding at the end of the staircase was their future Luna who was being crowned today.
And me? I was nothing but the pack slave, the most hated omega in this pack.
The tray that held Vivian's soup was still in my hands as I stood rooted in place.
“ Guards, seize her.” Hunter ordered.
Two men appeared from nowhere, each grabbing my arm and shoved me down the stairs roughly.
I managed to stabilize my footing before I landed on the floor face first.
Standing so close to Hunter, I could see the intensity of his hatred reflected in his orbs.
Slowly, he helped Vivian up who let out a pitiful whimper.
Whether she was really in pain or faking it, I didn't know. All I knew was that I was in deep s**t.
“ Apologise to Vivian.” Hunter ordered, a murderous look on his face.
“ Why should I apologise? I didn't do anything wrong.” I protested.
Big mistake.
Without warning, Hunter's leg connected with my stomach, sending me flying and crashing into the wall nearby.
Pain shot through every nerve of my body and I winced.
“ When I say apologise I mean you f*****g apologise.” Hunter roared.
The pack members watched, no one daring to intervene.
I mean, who would bother standing against the Alpha for someone like me?
With trembling limbs, I pushed myself up, tears threateningly to grace my cheeks but I pushed them back.
This was no time to cry and definitely no place.
“ I didn't push Vivian, Hunter, please believe me.” I tried to plead this time.
Why was I being forced to apologise for a mistake I didn't do? Wasn't that akin to being forced to admit to a crime I didn't commit?
“ Believe you? Everyone saw you push Vivian down the stairs and you dare take us for fools?” Hunter snapped, an impatient look on his face.
“ You should apologise while I am still being nice. I won't ask twice.” He declared.
I could not help but let out a bitter chuckle.
“ Everyone saw it or that's what you were made to see?” I fired back, meeting Hunter's gaze stubbornly.
They could drag me to hell but admitting to a crime I didn't commit wasn't going to happen.
“ Are you calling my Luna a liar?” He growled, the look on his face resembled a grim reaper descending to collect its dues.
“ I am your mate, why wouldn't you believe me?” I cried.
Gasps followed that revelation.
Two years since my wolf recognized Alpha Hunter as my mate and no one knew about it.
To Hunter, our matebond was a dirty mistake he so badly wanted to erase.
He has earned against ever letting others know and embarrass him.
Now, the cat was out of the bag and I knew I would pay dearly for that.
Fury erupted inside Hunter and he matched to me, gripping my neck tightly and squeezing it.
I chocked, hands scratching him and gasping for breath.
“ How dare you call yourself my mate in front of everyone? Do you have a death wish?” He said through gritted teeth, his grip tightening.
Dark dots started dancing before my eyes as panic crawled inside me.
Was this the end? Was this how I was bound to die?
Accused of something I didn't do and chocked to death by my own mate?
I fought desperately and just when my body started to give up, Hunter released me.
I flopped to the floor, coughing violently and inhaling greedily.
After a moment of stabilizing my breath, I met Hunter’s hateful eyes, a smirk dancing at the corner of my lips.
“ Are you ashamed that the moon Goddess paired you with me?” I challenged and watched as he clenched and unclenched his fists.
He then gripped my jaw and looked at me with so much disgust I gagged.
“ You are a MISTAKE!” Hunter roared.
“ I intend to do myself justice and correct it today.” He declared.
Before he could carry out his threat, Vivian screamed.
“ My baby! Hunter, please save our baby.”
Hunter abandoned every other plan he had for me and rushed to Vivian's side.
To my horror and everyone else's in that room, a deep crimson colour soaked through the white fabric Vivian wore, painting her dress red.
“ Call the doctor. The Luna is having a miscarriage.” Someone shouted.
Hunter picked Vivian and gathered her in his arms, his actions urgent.
Before he left, his piercing gaze settled on me.
“ If something happens to my baby, prepare to be buried with him.”
With that, he walked away, leaving me on the floor with a cracked rib and hateful glares sorrounding me.
