21 Cade This morning, I hadn’t wanted to leave Amber alone, but there was something I needed to do: talk to Mahaera, Mahaere, Mahaeru, or all three of them. I went to my study and called on her. I paced in front of the long white desk, my hands shaking, my breathing accelerated, my heart pounding. Amber was my mate. She was my beloved fated mate. And she was supposed to die for me and my people. For my court. Was that some sick joke from fate? Finally, after an hour of pacing and silently cursing the goddesses, Mahaeru showed up in front of me. Of course, the one who wouldn’t be moved by my despair was the one who came to talk to me. “You knew, didn’t you?” I asked without wasting time. “You knew from the start that Amber is my fated mate.” Mahaeru knotted her hands behind her back.
