I held Amber in my trembling arms.
“No,” I whispered, not believing the sight before me. Amber had fainted the moment the spear had struck her. A spear that would have pierced through my heart and killed me instantly. She saw Grimmel throwing it and hadn’t hesitated. She used herself as a shield. I heard her shallow breathing and felt the slow beating of her heart against my chest.
I raised my eyes to Grimmel. He stared at the scene like everyone else. The room had gone silent and still for a moment.
This was my opportunity. I lowered Amber on the floor, as fast and gentle as I could, and jumped. I shifted into a wolf midair and closed my jaw around Grimmel’s throat before he could even blink. I ripped his throat out and turned to his lackeys.
