John looked at the woman and said......
“My name is John David,”
He extended his trembling hand for a handshake. Just then John noticed that the woman was standing with an umbrella over her head. She smiled softly and took John’s hand. She said in a soft voice.... “I’m Laila.
I work in the college library.”
John shook his head a little unpreparedly. The raindrops were still falling on the edge of the umbrella. In the distance, students were seen running towards the college campus to avoid getting wet in the rain and seeking shelter. There was a strange busyness all around, and in the midst of it, their little moment of acquaintance stood out.
Laila asked again, “What do you do?”
John smiled softly and said, “Today is my first day at college. I am a professor of history. I have the opportunity to teach history to students here.” John paused and said…
If you allow me, I can go to your library sometimes and read books. I really love reading books.”
Laila was a little surprised and said, “Oh! Is that so? So from now on, I will see you in the library regularly.”
John said, a little jokingly, “That will only be possible if you get permission…if you don’t forget me?”
Laila laughed. Her smile stirred a strange feeling in John’s mind. A tender, unfamiliar feeling. John realized that there was something special hidden somewhere in this ordinary morning.
The two of them stood in silence for a while. All around them was the sound of the rain, the soft melody of raindrops falling on the leaves of the trees lying on the ground, as if nature itself had become their silent conversation partner.
Laila said softly, “You are still getting wet… If you want, you can go and sit in the library. It’s also time for my duty.”
John hesitated a little, “Then let’s go… can we go together?”
Laila smiled sweetly and nodded, “Let’s go.”
The two of them slowly started walking towards the college under the same umbrella. The rain was still falling, but John felt like every drop of this rain was announcing the beginning of a new chapter in his life.
As he walked, John suddenly remembered. He had to go to the office room to report. He stopped and looked at Laila and said, “I have to go to the office room now. See you later.”
Laila smiled softly, “Of course. See you.”
John slowly walked towards the office room. He stood in front of the door, took a deep breath, and then entered.
As soon as he entered, he was faced with an unexpected scene. The staff and professors present in the room applauded together and welcomed him. For a moment, John was completely stunned. He never thought that his first day would begin with such a warm welcome.
The sound of applause, the smiles on everyone's faces, and the sincere welcome, all together filled his heart with joy. This unfamiliar environment suddenly began to feel familiar.
Just then, John saw Laila standing on one side of the room. She was smiling softly. There was a kind of joy in her eyes, along with a hint of pride. As if she was happy to witness John's new beginning.
Seeing Laila, John also smiled lightly. That smile contained a kind of gratitude and unknown tension. It seemed that this small acquaintance had become the most precious part of the day for him.
Amidst all these new faces, new environment, new responsibilities, a strange peace came over John's mind. He felt that today was not just the beginning of a new job; rather, it was the beginning of a special chapter in his life.
It was still raining outside, but John no longer felt uneasy. Rather, the sound of the rain seemed to deepen the joy within him. He realized that some days in life come silently, to be remembered forever. And today was just such a memorable day.
