“I’m surprised you found anyone with enough credentials for our tech department,” I told Ryan. “Are you sure he met all our standards, and has a clean background?”
I can’t imagine an intern being qualified, and it wouldn’t be the first time that one of our competitors tried to get a spy in. We are the largest company and our competitors would love to get a hold of some of our head engineers and programmers, along with our contracts.
“No, his background is pretty clean, he’s a cousin of one of the fashion families located in town, looks like he’s moving back after living abroad with his family and will be living with his aunt and uncle. He looks a little young, but it says he graduated early and is looking for an internship as he goes to college.” Ryan was reading me off his highlights.
“Just make sure to keep an eye on him,” I warned Ryan. “As for the others?”
“The majority will be placed in the assistant workspace, to help out with the extra paperwork. If any of them show potential we can move them to different areas of expertise.” Said Ryan.
I nodded my head, and began to sort through all of my files that I needed for the business meeting today.

Today is the day, I am going to my first real job, at least one where I had a boss, and I was going to rock it. Jenny picked out my clothes and she helped me rehearse being a guy. The hardest part was going to remember to keep my voice lower. Other than that, I felt pretty confident.
After putting on my suite and wig, I looked at myself in the mirror, I couldn’t help but cringe a bit. Sure I was never big into primping and made up.. but I looked like a guy.. well maybe more of a boy. Looking in the mirror I told myself, you are no longer Alexis, you are Alex. Alex Carter. Jenny Carter was my cousin.
I left the bathroom and headed to the kitchen to have breakfast with Jenny. When I entered the room Jenny looked me up and down and gave me a head nod.
“You could totally pass for my cousin,” she said to me. “Just remember, it’s not going to be as easy as you think pretending to be a guy, the most important thing to remember, so that you don’t blow your cover is.. Do not use the women’s bathroom. You’ll either be labeled as a creep or get fired.”
“I think there are bigger things for me to be remembering right now, besides which bathroom to use,” I rolled my eyes at her. She gets fixated on the strangest things.
“We will see little cousin,” she winked at me. “So do you want a ride over there? I would love to check out where you’ll be working.”
“Sure, but no coming in today, how weird would that look, my cousin coming in for my orientation,” I said to her.
“What? I like looking out for my baby cousin. He’s so young,” she said while pinching my cheek.
I smacked her hand away, “If anyone is going to blow my cover it is going to be you.”
“Ok, fine I’ll be serious,” she said crossing her heart. “Let’s get going so that you aren’t late for your first day, and if you get into any trouble remember to text me. “
When we pulled up to the building, it seemed so much bigger than I had remembered. Even though my grandfather had larger companies, this felt so much more intimidating. Maybe because the Thorns are known for being cold and hard towards their employees.
“Do you need me to push you out of the car?” asked Jenny. And I think she was being sincere.
“No, just wish me luck,” I said to her as I was getting out.
I waved at her and the car took off. Alright, this was it. It was time to put on my game face and prove to everyone exactly who Alexis was. Which right now was a dude.
I went through the front doors and when to the reception desk to find out where I needed to go.
“Go ahead and take the elevator up the tenth floor. You’ll see another receptionist there and she can tell you which room you’ll want to head to,” she smiled at me and wished me luck.
When I made it up to the tenth floor I was surprised to find I was the only intern waiting to find out where I belong. The receptionist let me know that I was the only intern that was assigned to the tech department.
“You must be pretty good, they never send us any interns,” she said with a smile. “Any ways, it will be so nice to have a new face around for a bit.”
She let me know to wait until Ryan Thorn got up here and he would be showing me what my daily schedule would be looking like.
I was waiting about ten minutes before I heard the elevator ding and out walked a man. Not just any man though, the man from the club who had sat at my table by accident. “Just my luck,” I thought to myself. I’m about ready to find out if this disguise works.
He headed straight to me with a file in his hand. “You must be Alex?” He said to me.
“Yeah, that’s me,” I said trying to keep my voice low.
“You look younger than I thought you would be. I looked over your resume and you had a lot of accomplishments in programming and tech. Along with some very impressive recommendation letters.” he said as he was flipping through my file.
When he stopped to glance at me, he did a double take, “I’m sorry, but have we met before? You look very familiar.”
“I get that a lot, because of strong family genetics, and the fact that they are almost always on the front of some sort of front news article. I’m more the black sheep, not really into fashion, don’t get out much,” I said trying to keep my voice deep and avoid too much eye contact.
“Yeah, smarts and fashion don’t really go hand in hand. Anyways, I’m in charge of showing you around and getting you settled in. Honestly, there is a lot of doubt about your capabilities, so try your hardest, so I don’t look bad,” he told me and winked at me.
“I’m Ryan Thorn, but I preferred to be called Ryan, at least by anyone that I am working closely with. Now if you ever meet Jackson Thorn, make sure to address him as Mr. Thorn, he’s not as easy going as I am,” Ryan said as he threw his arm around my shoulder.
What the crap, why is he touching me?! How am I going to be able to keep up this disguise if this lunatic is always touching me. Has he never heard about professionalism?
“So, let’s get you settled in, right this way.” He said as he dragged me with him.
He brought me to a room where there were several computers, but there were no other people here. He still had his arm over my shoulder and I was looking at him from the side of my eye.
“Welcome to the tech station for interns, you are the only one currently, so hopefully you like solitude,” he said.
Finally he let me go and walked over to the closest, computer, “this is all yours. “
His phone just went off and he looked at a text message, “Well you’re luckier than most, you’re going to meet Jackson Thorn your first day!”
So much for keeping a low profile.
