Then the teacher administering the punishment would select an implement and prescribe a dose of painful medicine. Standard teachers’ desks had a hook on each side from which hung paddles, a leather one on the left and a wooden one on the right. These devices were widely distributed throughout the kingdom, and consisted of oval business ends the size of a large man’s hand tapering down to round wooden handles eight inches long. The strictest teachers chose to have a hundred holes drilled in each of their paddles, which enabled trapped air to flow through the device so that atmospheric molecules would not in any way cushion the impact between punishing leather or wood and tender buttock flesh.
Classroom spankings were doled out in doses of a hundred swats per buttock. Aliquots were prescribed based on the severity of the infraction, such that talking in class would be a single century, failing to do homework a double, and talking back to the teacher a triple. All of the boys, of course, would be undergoing basic military training the summer after graduating upper school. There they would be inducted into the militia units, they would do drills one week end a month for the next twenty years. This afforded the kingdom a well-trained army of over a million men instantaneously available in the rare cases when need arose.
The cultural celebration of sexuality of all forms had a few iron-clad limitations drilled into all Absynthians in their required catechism from earliest memory. “Love as Thou Wouldst” was very firmly taught to imply overt willingness on the part of all involved in any erotic act. That meant that rape was considered a capital crime, and those convicted of it were summarily executed. The Priests and Priestesses of the Holy God were adamant about this, that there was no place in civil society for those who would force s*x upon an unwilling other. Before Absynthians came of age, there was tacit encouragement to release s****l energy through m**********n. And after coming of age, as we will see there were ample opportunities provided in the venues of public punishment for any sexually starved citizen to get his or her needs met.
The other hard and fast limit about s****l expression ceaselessly taught every Sunday was that no citizen was mature enough to willingly consent to any form of s*x until he or she entered adulthood. This belief was repeated from earliest memory in every Absynthian’s weekly moral education until it was deeply implanted in young people’s minds to restrict their erotic forays to that which could be accomplished without the removal of clothing. The Priests and Priestesses of the Holy God who administered this rule in their flocks were not simple minded; they knew that in a highly eroticized environment, adolescents were going to be strongly tempted to have s*x no matter how powerful the interdict. So there was an unspoken understanding that young people who were willing participants could satisfy each other’s genital needs through clothing.
And the penalties for violating this rule were severe: public spankings ten times as long and hard as any classroom punishment. Violators of the rule could count on being bruised for over a month after their ordeal. These sessions were one of the venues where the reasons were demonstrated for Absynthians to have faith in the reality of their Holy God. For He had granted to his acolytes special powers that were incontrovertible proof of his power and direct willingness to influence the lives of those who believed in Him.
Priests were granted the charism of discernment, enabling them to sense the truth of any statement unerringly. Thus, when a miscreant was questioned regarding his or her crimes, any male acolyte of the Holy God would surely sense the truth of the matter. As a precaution, Absynthians of all ages were used to monthly counseling sessions with their local Priest in which they would be asked very matter-of-factly about their sexuality. In this way, developing problems could be spotted early and educated against. But in the rare cases when prohibited underage s*x was not nipped in the bud, the truth of what had transpired would be sniffed out and thoroughly revealed by Priestly discernment.
The special powers bestowed by the Holy God on his Priestesses were an even more convincing demonstration of His beneficence towards his chosen people. Female acolytes of the Temple were blessed with the amazing charism of Healing: the ability to lay on hands and immediately make better any ailment or injury that was not certainly fatal. This ability was so profound that, unlike the surrounding countries who worshipped different deities, there were no apothecaries or physicians in Absynthia. Surgeons did a business in setting broken bones and disinfecting and closing and stitching wounds, but all other ailments were cared for by the Priestesses who were enjoined to heal anyone who sought them for treatment. This meant that virtually all citizens of the Kingdom enjoyed healthy lives of nearly a century in average duration before they died natural peaceful deaths.
When a Priest had determined that prohibited underage s*x had taken place, a Priestess was informed and the pair of ecclesiastics escorted the miserable culprits to the public punishment stocks nearest the upper school attended by them. The sinners would be all too aware of what was in store for them, having witnessed previous violators face their consequences each year as was required of all students, ‘pour encourager les autres’. The bell would be rung a dozen times, many more than when the bailiff would announce the chastisement of an adult, signaling that miscreant young people had violated the strongest prohibition in their culture. Even the most jaded of connoisseurs of the piquant gyrations of naughty buttocks undergoing well-deserved chastisement would come running to get front row seats for this particular punishment. But most importantly, the local student body to which the violators belonged would be released from class and carefully shepherded by their teachers to this most serious of lessons.
Once all of their audience was in place, the unhappy couple would have their sins announced, and then suffer the mortifying fate of being stripped naked by the Priest and Priestess in front of the entire assembly. Then they would be led to the paired stocks. There the top halves would be raised while the miscreants placed their necks and wrists in the padded slots, after which the upper stock would be lowered and locked in place. Then their ankles would be guided to the shackles bolted five feet apart behind each stock, where the sinners’ final position for the next agonizing hour would be secured as their lower limbs were inescapably imprisoned in a wide straddle. The fate of the lovely youthful naked bodies was now truly sealed now bent at the waist at a right angle with buttocks delicately parted and the offending organs clearly visible to their entire audience.
Special paddles were employed by the ecclesiastic pair for this solemn ceremony. It was believed that this most serious of underage violations of the Holy God’s law must be addressed more severely than the daily infractions students were quite accustomed to being spanked for. Thus, larger and heavier paddles made of the hardest wood and pierced by a hundred holes were employed, delivering a far more painful impression on these most extremely naughty buttocks than any other implement they would have felt.
