Sparks in the Elevator
The city never slept. Even in February, New York was alive with lights, honking cars, and the smell of coffee and rain on asphalt. Skyscrapers reflected the sun like giant mirrors, and people rushed from place to place, headphones in, minds elsewhere.
Kael walked through the revolving doors of ArgentTech, a glass and steel tower downtown. His black coat brushed the floor as he moved quietly, almost unseen. He preferred it that way. Quiet, unnoticed. Safe.
He hated being noticed. Not because he was shy. Far from it. Kael was strong, fast, and had senses sharper than anyone around him. But people… people feared what they couldn’t understand. And Kael was something they couldn’t understand.
No one knew the truth. Not here. Not at this office. Not anywhere on Earth.
Kael worked as a cybersecurity analyst. On the surface, he was just a man staring at code, monitoring systems, stopping hackers, keeping secrets safe. But that was the easy part. The hard part was controlling himself.
The wolf inside him stirred. A low hum of hunger, power, and instinct. Every sound of the city — sirens, footsteps, the screech of brakes — made his senses sharper, faster. He ignored it. Always ignored it.
Across town, Lyra strode through the same revolving doors, tall and confident. Her long hair caught the sunlight, burning like fire, though no one noticed. They couldn’t see the magic in her veins, the heat beneath her skin. She smiled politely at the receptionist, who looked exhausted. She always smiled, even when tired. That was part of her disguise: approachable, normal, professional.
But inside, her heart beat faster. Flying to Earth had been terrifying. Escaping her court even more. She had left a world of rules, of obedience, of expectation, for this strange place where she could pretend to be human. She had to learn the ways of humans: coffee, small talk, emails, corporate meetings. Everything was a performance.
She had a plan. Blend in. Live normal. Be free.
She was doing very well at hiding, until…
Kael.
She didn’t know it yet, but he would change everything.
The First Encounter
It happened in the elevator.
Lyra stepped in on the 23rd floor. Kael pressed the button for the 45th floor. They didn’t notice each other at first.
Then the elevator jerked. Stopped. Lights flickered. The air shifted.
Kael’s eyes narrowed. Something… was off. Something she carried. He could feel it, like a spark of fire against ice. His wolf stirred instinctively, a low growl rumbling in his chest.
Lyra felt it too. Heat rose in her palms. Her wings itched beneath her jacket, a tingle she tried to ignore. Whoever this man was, something about him made her heart race. Not fear. Excitement. Curiosity. Danger.
The elevator shuddered again. Then stopped completely.
“Uh… hi?” Lyra said carefully. She didn’t want to seem scared, but the man beside her was… different. Tall. Broad. His eyes a golden brown that seemed to pierce through the fluorescent light.
Kael’s lips barely moved. “Hello.”
A silence fell. Not awkward. Heavy. Electric.
Lyra shifted slightly. Her heels clicked on the polished floor. “So… stuck?”
Kael’s jaw tightened. “Seems so.”
She studied him. His suit was simple, black. Neat. Professional. Normal. Yet everything about him screamed… not normal. His movements were controlled, precise, like a predator sizing up its surroundings.
She smiled faintly. “You seem… calm about it.”
“I’m always calm,” he said. His voice was low, smooth, but there was an edge. A warning.
Lyra tilted her head. Something about him made her pulse faster, made her senses tingle. She had spent her life avoiding attention, blending in. And yet here she was… noticing. Noticing him.
The elevator shuddered again. Kael’s hand went to the wall for balance, and instinctively, Lyra’s hand brushed his.
Sparks. Literally. He felt fire in her touch. She felt electricity in his presence.
Both froze. Eyes met. Golden eyes. Amber eyes.
And neither looked away.
The elevator hummed, and then, as suddenly as it had stopped, it started moving again.
First Sparks of Connection
By the time the elevator opened on the 45th floor, something had changed.
They walked out together, heading to their respective departments. Kael kept a small distance, but every step he took, he was aware of her. Not just her presence — her energy. It pulled at something deep inside him.
Lyra noticed it too. She tried to shrug it off. But she couldn’t. She felt seen in a way she hadn’t on Earth before.
Weeks passed. They worked in the same building. Meetings. Coffee breaks. Elevator rides. Every accidental brush, every shared glance, sent sparks through both of them.
No one else noticed. Humans never notice. But Kael and Lyra knew.
Their energy reacted when they were near. Electronics flickered. Lights dimmed. Small fires ignited near her when she was excited. His wolf stirred when he was emotional.
And slowly, they realized — something was happening.
The Office Night
It was late. The city was quiet, rain tapping against the glass windows. Kael stayed behind to finish a report. He didn’t want to stay, but the code required his focus.
Lyra had stayed too. She had pulled overtime in the creative department, editing a campaign. Their paths crossed in the office kitchen.
“Still here?” she asked, smirking.
Kael looked up. “You too.”
She laughed softly. “Guess we both like the office at night.”
“Or we have nowhere else to be,” he replied, leaning against the counter. His golden eyes caught the reflection of the overhead light.
They talked. Slowly at first. Small talk. Then stories. Then… secrets. Not real secrets, but the kind that make someone trust you faster than normal.
Lyra laughed at something he said. He smiled slightly. The wolf stirred in the back of his mind — low, growling, not dangerous yet.
They moved closer without noticing. The air between them was thick. Heat and tension. Something ancient, something cosmic.
One hand brushed. Then another. Their lips met, soft at first, then urgent.
They moved through the office, out of the kitchen, into a quiet hallway.
The connection was undeniable. Fire and shadow. Wolf and flame.
When they finally surrendered to it, something happened.
A subtle surge of power — Kael’s eyes flickered gold, just a hint. Lyra’s palms glowed faintly red. The air shimmered. The city outside the windows reflected the strange, glowing light.
They didn’t notice. They only noticed each other.
That night, the office became their secret. A place of energy, passion, and awakening. The spot where they fully recognized each other. Where their worlds collided.
And neither of them knew:
Something ancient, something powerful, had felt it too. The realms they had left behind — the godly realm and the Ember Court — had noticed.
Hints of Danger
The morning after, they returned to the office as if nothing happened. But something lingered.
Kael sat at his desk, eyes flicking to the elevator, thinking about her. The wolf growled softly in his chest. He didn’t know why, exactly. Just… instinct.
Lyra smiled at him across the office, fingers brushing the papers. Heat rose to her cheeks. She felt something she had never felt before — safety. Almost. But also fear.
They were hiding. Hiding their true selves. Hiding from the world.
But now, hiding from each other seemed impossible.
And somewhere in New York City, someone — or something — had taken notice of the sparks between them.
