A LONG DAY

Author’s POV “And you are?” She decided to play dumb she couldn’t expose her aunt like that. “Lucas, Miss?” “Claire. Can I help you?” “Yes, I’m looking for a Gina Argent.” “That’s my aunt but she isn’t in.” She lied “Oh!” The man had a look of disappointment. “But I would like to have a long conversation with you mister. She looked back and came out slowly closing the door.” “Let’s go.” She leads him down the stairs and greeted the receptionist like usual but she blushed when she saw Lucas. She led him to the park close by. They sat on the bench. “You made my Auntie cry.” He looked very down when he heard her. Like he was in pain. “I’m sorry.” “Save the apologies tell me why you did that.” He looked at her surprised. “Don’t look so surprised. I’m her other half whatever she knows I do too.” He was silent for some time. He seemed to be in deep thought possibly brooding what to say next. “Two brothers loved each other, Leo and Claud. They made a vow never keep secrets from each other.” Claire was surprised she didn’t remember ordering a k****e package but she let him continue. “One day they decided to go to the beach and went on a boat ride. Then the second brother, Claud fell into the water. The Leo swam for hours but couldn’t find his little brother. He was sad and broken and prayed every day with all his heart for his brother to be returned to him.  It was believed people who drown didn’t get to go to the afterlife but became wondering souls reliving traumatic events. The goddess of the sea heard the heart-wrenching prayers of the elder brother. She told him she would return his brother to him. However, they were some conditions that needed to be met. 1. Every full moon he was to dine with the goddess. 2. Claude will have no memory of ever drowning and under no circumstance should he be reminded. If these conditions were met his little brother will live a long and happy life and be able to go to the afterlife. However, if not he’ll die and forever be a wondering soul reliving the horrible events of drowning. The big brother accepted and his little brother was brought back to life. Every full moon the Leo would go to the beach and dine with the beautiful ocean goddess. Claude soon became jealous and thought his brother stopped loving him because he found a beautiful woman to replace him. Claude confronted his brother and told him if he didn’t tell him what was going on, reminding him of their vow, he would leave him. Leo was torn if he kept their vow he would lose his brother but if he didn’t he would still lose his brother. So Leo did the only good thing a brother could, he let him go. Even though it would destroy him.” Claire was now wiping streams of tears from her face. The story was moving. “He was right to let his brother go some secrets are just too dangerous.” “Exactly!” Claire turned to him perplexed at first but soon understood. “I see.” “Some secrets are just enough to tear relationships apart but they must be kept secrets to protect one’s heart.” He nodded. She pulled a recorder out of her pocket and turned it off. “You’ll hear from my other half.” He chuckled. “Continue the story,” Claire demanded with fiery eyes. “Well, the ocean goddess fell in love with him and married him giving him the name Poseidon. The reason why he indulges himself in so many women is to fill the void his brother left.” “Really?” “Naah. I just made it up.” She giggled and nods her head. “You have been evaluated and I approve this reunion. Now you’ll need the consent of my other half for this to happen.” He laughs and nods.   “Well it’s getting chilly and late I should go.” He offers to escort her back and she accepts. One their way Lucas informs her that they're being followed. She is a bit scared but Lucas tells her to continue walking and the duck into an alley. Lucas manages to get the stalker in an arm lock and takes of the hoody. “Dad?” Claire exclaimed. She was visibly annoyed, glaring at him with malice and disgust. “Lucas let's go.” She turned around and left. “You’re not going to even talk.” She halted in her steps. “Talk about what?” Hate dripped from every word she uttered. “I just wanted to talk to my daughter. Is that a crime?” “Stay away from me. You and I have nothing to discuss.” “If I don’t?” Claire was shocked at his reply. Lucas dragged him by the arm to the corner. He whispered something in his ears that may go pale and runoff. Claire didn’t really have the urge to ask him what he said but just thanked him. He dropped her off in front of the apartment and left. She changes into a new pair of pajamas and slides into bed. Her vision was directed at the ceiling while her mind sorted the events of this long day as she slowly drifted off to sleep.
