Chapter 2 I'm Getting A Divorce

1174 Words
As Natalie pushed open the bedroom door, a shocked gasp filled the room. She looked up to see Lucy standing inside Edward's bedroom. Lucy was loosely wrapped in a towel, her exposed shoulder marked with several suggestive hickeys. Natalie's gaze shifted, and there, on the bed behind Lucy, was Edward, his clothes disheveled, eyes closed, lying there. For a moment, everything around her seemed to blur and fade. Her heart felt like it was being pierced by a sharp knife, slowly tearing apart. Tears welled up in her eyes as she staggered backward, struggling to breathe from the pain. "Oh my God, Natalie, what are you doing here?" Lucy said, feigning surprise. She glanced at Edward, then turned back to Natalie, her expression turning coy. "Edward insisted we spend some time together. I really couldn't help it. I'm sorry, Natalie. You know, love can't be forced. Edward and I are in love." At this moment, Edward let out a faint groan, showing signs of waking up. Lucy became increasingly shy. "I need to use the bathroom," she said. Almost the instant Lucy stepped into the bathroom, Edward opened his eyes. He had drunk a lot of alcohol that evening and was now feeling a slight headache. Seeing Natalie in the room, a mocking expression appeared on Edward's face. "What are you doing here?" Natalie’s sapphire-blue eyes fixed intently on him, her voice hoarse. "Don’t you have anything to say to me?" Edward glanced at her for a moment before suddenly saying, "Let’s get a divorce." Natalie staggered, almost unable to stand upright. "So that’s how it is..." she murmured. He had planned to divorce me all along. No wonder he ended up in bed with Lucy! Edward got up. Tall and broad-shouldered, he towered over her. Seeing Natalie so visibly shaken, Edward let out a cold laugh. "Don’t act like you’re so in love with me. Our marriage has always been a joke." Natalie took step after step backward, her body trembling uncontrollably. Edward's words stung because they were the truth. Natalie was the adopted daughter of A-country’s vice president, while Edward had originally been set to marry Lucy, the vice president's biological daughter. But three years ago, on that fateful night, Natalie mistakenly entered the wrong room while drunk and ended up spending the night with Edward. Somehow, the incident was leaked to the media, and under immense public pressure, Edward replaced his bride with Natalie. Over the past three years, Natalie had given up her career, willingly becoming a full-time housewife and devoting herself entirely to Edward’s life. She had sacrificed everything for him—she had even carried their child. Natalie clenched her teeth, fighting to keep her tears from falling. "Edward, did you ever love me?" "Love?" Edward sneered, his voice dripping with disdain. "How dare you talk about love with me? Let me be clear—I’ve never loved you! Not in the past, not now, and certainly not in the future!" At last, the tears Natalie had held back began to fall, her heart numb with pain. Three years of marriage—she had thought it was enough to make Edward fall in love with her. But now she knew, she had failed completely. She pulled off her wedding ring and hurled it at Edward’s face with all her strength. "Don’t worry, you’ll never see me again!" With that, Natalie turned and walked away without looking back. Edward stared blankly at the ring lying at his feet. No one noticed that in the bathroom, Lucy was smiling—her expression one of triumph and satisfaction. The streets were eerily quiet at 1 a.m. There was no one around. Natalie wandered aimlessly down street after street, turning corner after corner, as if running would keep her sorrow and pain from swallowing her whole. But eventually, she grew exhausted and couldn't walk any longer. Leaning against a cold wall, she covered her face with her hands. The floodgates of her tears opened, and she couldn't stop crying. Her heart felt torn into a million pieces, each one burning with pain. Images of Edward and Lucy together flashed through her mind: Edward kissing Lucy, caressing her, holding her through the night. What had once been Natalie's tenderness and sweetness now became her deepest wound. Deep down, Natalie knew her relationship with Edward was over. As the first light of dawn broke, Natalie had gathered herself. Her love was over, but life had to go on. Taking a deep breath, she dialed the number she had buried deep inside her heart. "Robert, it's me. I... I'm getting a divorce." On the other end, Robert's breath hitched, then urgently replied, "Wait for me. I'm sending someone to pick you up right now!" There was no need for her to return to the Presidential Residence. That had never truly been her home. Since she could remember, Natalie had grown up in an orphanage in the capital of Arlandia. Although the vice president's family had adopted her, they never gave her any love or attention. Three years ago, when she "stole" Edward from them, they saw her as an enemy. And her best friend Kate had married into Belvaria a year ago. Now, there was nothing left for her in Arlandia. A sharp screech of brakes broke through her thoughts, and a bright red sports car came to a stop at her feet. The door opened, and Lucy stepped out, smiling at Natalie. "Edward was worried you might do something rash, so he sent me to check on you." "Thanks, but no thanks," Natalie said, moving to walk past her. But Lucy lowered her voice, smirking. "Last night, Edward and I had a very... satisfying night together." Natalie's cold reply was sharp: "Before I slap you, get out of my sight." Lucy's face darkened, and she glared at her fiercely. "You stole my Edward!" "Oh really? Then why did I end up in Edward's room three years ago? Lucy, don't think everyone's as naive as you." Lucy's face flickered with guilt but quickly masked it. She reached into the car and pulled out a document, slamming it in front of Natalie. "It's from Edward." It was a divorce agreement! Natalie stood frozen, stunned. Lucy sneered. "You lowly woman, you're not good enough for Edward. Fortunately, he's come to his senses. I suggest you sign it quickly and move on. Don't keep clinging to him!" Natalie's heart stung, Edward, was he that eager to be rid of her? "Fine," she said, picking up the pen and signing her name decisively. But the next moment, nausea hit her, and she rushed to the curb, dry heaving. Lucy's expression darkened as she watched Natalie's reaction. Could she be pregnant? No, after all the work she'd put in to get Edward, she couldn't let this slip away now! Just then, a large truck roared down the street. Lucy's eyes glinted with malice as she stepped behind Natalie and shoved her hard. "Ah!" Natalie staggered and fell into the street.
