Chapter 1 Sophia Omokiniovo stepped out of the taxi and onto the bustling streets of Abuja, the warm sun beating down on her skin. She took a deep breath, feeling a mix of emotions swirl inside her – excitement for the new chapter ahead, but also a tinge of sadness for the life she'd left behind. The scent of street food and exhaust fumes filled her nostrils as she gazed out at the unfamiliar cityscape. The next day, Sophia set out to explore Abuja and search for a job. She had some savings to tide her over, but she knew she needed to find employment soon. As she walked through the streets, she stumbled upon a small hair salon with a "help wanted" sign in the window. On a whim, Sophia pushed open the door and was greeted by the warm smile of Mrs. Nneoma. "Hello, dear! I'm looking for a job," Sophia said, her confidence growing. Mrs. Nneoma's eyes lit up. "We're looking for a hair stylist! Let's see what you can do." Sophia's hands moved deftly as she worked on a client's hair, the familiar rhythms soothing her nerves. She landed the job on the spot and began working at the salon under Mrs. Nneoma's guidance. Meanwhile, in Lagos, Ethan Smith sat in his office, staring out at the city skyline. His mind was preoccupied with the suffocating marriage to Rachel, a union that felt more like a business arrangement than a loving partnership. The weight of his responsibilities as a husband and CEO of Smith Oil Company bore down on him, leaving him feeling trapped. Rachel walked into the office, her designer heels clicking on the floor. "Ethan, we need to discuss the upcoming charity event," she said, her voice devoid of warmth. Ethan's eyes met hers, and for a moment, he felt a pang of regret. He thought of Sophia, the one who had truly loved him, and wondered what could have been. As Sophia settled into her new life in Abuja, she found herself surrounded by happy couples who came to the salon for styling and makeup. They'd hold hands, steal glances, and laugh together, making Sophia feel like a outsider. Every time she'd see them, she'd feel a pang of sadness, and memories of Ethan would flood her mind. She'd try to shake them off, but it was hard to focus on her work. One day, as she was styling a customer's hair, Sophia's mind wandered back to Ethan. She'd imagine what could've been, what she'd lost. In her distraction, she accidentally burned the customer's hair with the flat iron. The customer yelped in pain, and Sophia's boss, Mrs. Nneoma, rushed over to intervene. "Sophia, what's wrong with you today?" Mrs. Nneoma asked, her voice stern but concerned. "You're usually so focused on your work." Sophia apologized profusely, feeling embarrassed and frustrated with herself. She knew she needed to get her emotions under control, but it was hard when every couple she saw made her think of Ethan. Meanwhile, in Lagos, Ethan's marriage to Rachel was feeling the strain. Rachel would try to get his attention, but he'd often brush her off, preoccupied with the pressures of his company. Sometimes, he'd make an effort to be present, to show her he cared, but it felt forced, and Rachel could sense it. "Ethan, can we talk?" Rachel asked one evening, as they sat in their luxurious living room. "What is it, Rachel?" Ethan replied, his eyes fixed on his phone. "Can't you put that away for one minute?" Rachel snapped, her frustration boiling over. "I feel like I'm losing you, Ethan. You're always so distant, so preoccupied." Ethan sighed, feeling guilty but also trapped. "I'm just stressed, Rachel. It's the company, the pressure...I'll try to do better, okay?" Rachel nodded, but the look in her eyes told Ethan she didn't believe him. He knew he needed to do more, to be more present in their marriage, but he just didn't know how. Sophia's mistake with the customer had shaken her confidence. She'd always taken pride in her work, and the incident had left her feeling like a failure. Mrs. Nneoma's words echoed in her mind: "You're usually so focused on your work." Sophia knew she needed to get her emotions under control, but it was hard when every little thing reminded her of Ethan. As the days went by, Sophia's performance at the salon improved, but she couldn't shake off the feeling of sadness that lingered inside her. She'd see couples holding hands, laughing together, and she'd feel a pang of longing. She'd wonder what Ethan was doing, if he was happy with Rachel. One day, as Sophia was leaving the salon, she bumped into a couple who were deeply in love. They were gazing into each other's eyes, and Sophia felt like she'd been punched in the gut. She quickly looked away, trying to compose herself, but she couldn't help but feel a tear roll down her cheek. Meanwhile, Ethan's marriage was struggling to stay afloat. Rachel's constant demands for attention and affection were suffocating him. He felt like he was drowning in their luxurious lifestyle, and he didn't know how to escape. "Ethan, why don't you ever take me out anymore?" Rachel asked, pouting. "We used to have so much fun together." Ethan sighed, feeling trapped. "Rachel, I'm busy with work. I don't have time for dates." Rachel's face fell, and Ethan felt a pang of guilt. He knew he was neglecting her, but he didn't know how to fix it. He felt like he was stuck in a rut, and he didn't know how to get out. As the days turned into weeks, Sophia's life in Abuja became a routine. She'd go to work, come home, and spend her evenings alone, thinking about what could've been. Ethan's life, on the other hand, was a never-ending cycle of work and obligations. He felt like he was losing himself in the process. One day, Sophia received an unexpected call from her best friend, asking her to meet up for coffee. Sophia agreed, hoping to take her mind off things. As she sat down at the café, she saw her friend walking towards her with a big smile on her face. "Hey, girl! It's been ages!" her friend exclaimed, giving Sophia a hug. Sophia smiled, feeling a sense of relief wash over her. Maybe, just maybe, things were about to get better. As Sophia hugged her friend, she felt a sense of comfort and familiarity wash over her. They sat down, and Sophia couldn't help but notice how much her friend had changed. She looked more confident, more radiant. "So, what's new with you?" Sophia's friend asked, taking a sip of her coffee. "You look a little down. Everything okay?" Sophia sighed, feeling a lump form in her throat. "It's just...I don't know, I feel like I'm stuck in limbo. I left Lagos to start fresh, but it feels like I'm just going through the motions. And every couple I see makes me think of Ethan." Her friend nodded sympathetically. "I know it's tough, but you're strong, Sophia. You'll get through this. What do you think...
