Chapter 1: Disobedience
‘Why am I even here?’
‘This wasn’t the plan’
Elena's heart pounded against her chest as she stood in the grand office, feeling like a lamb surrounded by wolves. The dark blue pattern that adorned the office walls seemed to only get darker the longer she stared at it. The room echoed with a chilling emptiness, matching the icy blue eyes of the man who held the title of 'Boss.' Anna De’Leon, Elena’s mother had hastily left, leaving her alone to face the intimidating figure of the Martinez family’s head alone. In that silent space, Elena felt the weight of her solitude press upon her, each heartbeat echoing like a distant drum, as she stood alone before the infamous Leon Martinez.
Rumors painted him as a big deal in the world of crime – a master of manipulation, a murderer, an enforcer, an executioner, and a strategist who loved playing mind games. He also paid off the police and even killed people without second thoughts. Loyal only to his family, and he didn't mind ending anyone who got in his way.
They said Leon was in his late thirties, almost hitting forty, with really dark hair and charcoal color eyes, but the man in the room with Elena right now had blue eyes and looked to be in his late twenties.
‘This couldn’t be Leon Martinez it must be one of his brothers or cousins’
The stray thought lingered in Elena’s mind after catching a glimpse of the man.
The word on the street was that he was the oldest among the Martinez siblings, probably because he was next in line to lead the family, no one is really sure though.
The Martinez family kept their main members a secret. Only a select few knew who they really were or what they looked like. It added to the mystery surrounding them. In the whispers and rumors, Leon Martinez became a kind of living legend.
‘Whoever this guy is I wish he’d just leave already. He isn’t worth my time'
‘This is so stupid’
‘I know I shouldn’t have left something this important, this important to her’
The door closed behind Anna with a resounding thud, sealing Elena's fate within the luxurious confines of the office. The grand office exuded opulence from every corner, a symphony of luxury and sophistication. Deep mahogany furniture adorned the room, creating a rich and warm contrast against the dark blue patterned walls. Soft, ambient lighting cascaded from exquisite chandeliers overhead, casting a warm and inviting glow upon the space.
A plush, handcrafted rug with intricate patterns sprawled across the floor, its muted gold tones adding an extra layer of elegance to the room. The air carried the faint scent of rich leather and polished wood, creating an atmosphere of refined decadence.
A massive, intricately carved desk of dark hardwood commanded the center stage, its surface adorned with carefully arranged documents and the finest executive accessories. Behind the desk, a high-backed leather chair beckoned authority, swathed in the finest material for both comfort and regality.
Expansive bookshelves with mahogany finishes boasted leather-bound tomes and priceless artifacts, each contributing to the air of intellectual refinement. In one corner, a well-appointed sitting area beckoned with plush velvet chairs and a mahogany coffee table, inviting intimate conversations amidst an ambiance of affluence.
Gilt-framed artwork adorned the walls, complementing the overall aura of cultured wealth. Every detail in the grand office was a testament to the owner's impeccable taste and wealth, creating an environment where power and luxury converged seamlessly. This was not merely an office; it was a sanctuary of sophistication, a realm where success and refinement coalesced into a harmonious display of grandeur, with the dark blue patterned walls adding a touch of depth and elegance to the overall aesthetic.
Her stomach was in butterflies and not in a good way, she couldn’t help but think this was a bad idea. If regret was a person it would have been her in that moment.
She couldn't shake the vivid memory of the confrontation at home—the heated struggle that had left her cheek throbbing with pain. The light blotches that littered her body were reminders of their numerous physical encounters.
The plan had been set for months, Elena was to go to the Robiini family and use them to get back at the Martinez but Anna suddenly changed the plan on D-Day, without telling her why. Elena was now expected to infiltrate the Martinez family, but that's all she was told; wing it was what Anna told her before Elena began to oppose, ultimately leading to yet another one of their fights.
The trust had long been forgotten between the two. Their relationship was as fragile as Anna’s temper. The scars on both their bodies were testaments to the fragility of their alliance.
The room itself mocks her current predicament. The contrast between the luxurious surroundings and the unease settling in Elena's stomach created a dissonance that only intensified her discomfort. The atmosphere felt charged as if the very air held the weight of the decisions that would shape her future.
"Come here" Leon commanded, his voice cutting through the air like a knife. Elena's sense of vulnerability deepened under his scrutinizing gaze. Her mother's mess left for her to clean up. Leon's appraisal felt like an extension of the rejection she had experienced at home. The air in the room grew heavier, laden with a sense of foreboding that seemed to seep from the very walls.
‘I don’t want to die here’
‘This wasn’t even my idea’
‘Anna that stupid, b***h’
Leon couldn’t seem to get a sensible read on the girl in front of him. Was she crazy or had she already given up?
Her nerves were noticeable but her attention still seemed to be elsewhere. He took this time to observe her.
She had shoulder-length dark brown hair, occasionally adorned with subtle caramel streaks that blended seamlessly into slight waves. Her light brown eyes betrayed the anxiety within, flickering with unease. As she stood, a nervous habit revealed itself - she was biting the inside of her cheek, and her fingers fidgeted restlessly. Her gaze, was more fixated on the floor than anything else, occasionally looking up or glancing around the room to expose a pair of light brown eyes.
Elena observed him as well, he stood behind the desk in a white dress shirt with gold cufflinks, and black dress pants. His dark hair was free of any products. His blue eyes were focused on the paperwork that was laid out on the table before him. He towered over the table with his muscular 6’4 build.
Leon broke the suffocating silence, his voice low and commanding. "I've been watching you," he admitted, revealing a level of interest that seem both intrigued and frightened Elena. His stern tone sent a chill down through Elena, a chill that didn’t go unnoticed. He glanced up briefly meeting her eyes before refocusing on the papers on the table.
‘She’s just like the rest of them’ Leon thought to himself.
‘Yuck his voice sounds so forced” Elena thought to herself as she tried to not show her dislike.
Leon had indeed been watching both women, Anna and Elena, with Anna owing the family a large amount of money she was a possible flight risk and Elena was a potential collateral.
Despite the intimidating atmosphere, Elena approached his desk as instructed. The room's grandeur became more pronounced with each step, each footfall echoing the disparity between her humble beginnings and the powerful world she found herself entangled. She felt like a pawn in a grand chess game, uncertain of the rules and the stakes involved. Rules that she would surely amend to her liking.
"You have potential, Elena," he continued, his words wrapping around her like a web. "But the potential is meaningless without discipline. I don't tolerate disobedience."
The girl did have potential, Leon had seen it himself. Not only was she smart but she was also athletic. She could be a good asset to the business in more than one way. The girls have been a bit lacking recently and she could be an interesting addition. Not to mention she excels academically.
Elena swallowed hard, grappling with the weight of his expectations. The events leading up to this moment flashed before her eyes—the arguments, the tears, and the sense of betrayal. She questioned how her life had unraveled so quickly, from the familiar pain of her mother's hand on her cheek to the surreal office that now felt like a battleground of destiny.
Leon leaned back in his chair, his gaze unwavering. "You're here for a reason," he declared cryptically. "But whether this becomes an opportunity or a curse depends on your choices. Remember, Elena, in this world, there are no second chances."
As the gravity of his words settled, Elena couldn't shake the feeling that her life was full of chaos and uncertainty. Leon's piercing gaze left her with a profound sense of unease as if the answers to her questions lay hidden in the shadows of the room that now felt like a battleground where her destiny hung in the balance.
‘I am here for a reason, a blessing for me, but it might be a curse for you’
The grandeur of the office seemed to close in on her, and she struggled to find her voice amid the echoes of the past. Leon’s cold gaze bore into her, and she felt like a pawn in a high-stakes game with rules she hadn't yet grasped.
"You have questions," Leon stated, almost as if he could read the turmoil within her. "Ask, and you shall receive answers. But be careful, Elena, for the truth can be as treacherous as the lies you've been told."
His words hung in the air, a challenge that beckoned her to unravel the enigma that surrounded her. The room, once a stage of uncertainty, now felt like a battlefield where the skirmish of destiny was about to be played out. Elena took a deep breath, steeling herself for the revelations that awaited her in the Boss’ domain, in Leon’s domain.
