Chapter 1
"I, Kieran Bloodstone, reject you, Rowan Wolfe as my chosen mate." Kieran's voice echoed through the woods under the glow of the crescent moon. The pack had gathered for a soiree and he lured me away from the others to our favorite spot where we'd met in secret. Only, this time, the words that came out of his mouth struck my heart and shattered them into a million broken shards. A tear slid past my eyes as I shuddered, not wanting to believe that my mate, my very own mate gifted to me by the moon goddess would betray me. "Why?! Why?! How could you..." I gasped, struggling to make out words. "Did you think that I was going to choose you over Selene? Don't act foolish now, Rowan. You know my father has already formed an alliance with the SilverAsh Pack, and mating her seals it.” He spoke the words with no remorse, each sentence more sharper than a sword, plunging deep into my chest. "But you said you loved me! You said it didn't matter if your father wanted her for you. You said you'd choose me, Kieran. So why?!” He shrugged with a chuckle, "There was no relationship to begin with, Rowan. You were just to dumb to notice. I never marked you, I only masked my bite to bind you to me. You think I'd choose you, daughter of a nobody to be the pack's Luna? I only used you when you offered up yourself to me." he growled angrily. "But...but I thought you loved me!" "I never loved you. Not even once." he ended with a frigid voice. I gasped, my heart constricted painfully in my chest. I opened my mouth to speak but words failed me, tears pooled down heavily from my face. I stumbled back when I couldn't bear his eyes that gazed at me like I was a stranger, the affection in them simmering to hate. It was all I could do to turn on my heels and flee, I ran as fast as my feet could carry me, far away from the pack. When I had gotten closer to the lake that illuminated the moon's light I fell to my feet writhing in pain and agony, pouring my heart out as I wailed in pain. Orphaned, and raised by the Clover pack, I grew up with stories of Alpha Cyril rescuing me in the woods, when he found me close to a dead, rogue she-wolf he could only assume was my mother. The alpha warned me against asking too many questions, making it clear that I owed him my life and he could do to me as he pleased. Even if it meant killing me. Born without a wolf, I was frail and sickly. My heightened senses were the only proof that I was indeed, one of their kind. I was an outcast among shifters, and didn't belong with humans either. Once I turned eighteen, I realized that I couldn't shift, but I found my mate instead. Kieran! The bond, pulled me to him, and I thought he felt it too. But it turned out that it was all a lie. Kieran lied to me! Told me I was his mate and what I felt was the bond, then he marked me and I gave myself away to him! But it was all a f*****g lie! ★ Three Months Later★ "Hurry up, Rowan! The maid mistress will have our heads if we don't have the courtyard cleaned by sundown," Kayla, my childhood friend, hollered at me as I hurriedly changed into the maid's dress picked out for tonight. It was the Blood Moon festival, and the entire pack was thrown into preparation. Not only that, we had to prepare for the arrival of the Alpha's brother, who was away, for years. I gritted my teeth in annoyance as I gathered my hair into a messy bun. "I'm sorry, okay?" I pouted. "Besides, the maid mistress will be too busy preparing for the soiree to notice that two maids forgot to clock in early." Kayla rolled her eyes at me, folding her arms at her chest as she muttered. "She will find out, Rowan. If we don't leave right now. I'm sure you know how important today is for us, right?" "Yeah, I know. The Clover Pack gets to host the ShadowBlood Pack," I muttered, feeling a small chill run down my spine. Our pack had no business hosting Shadow wolf shifters, but our alpha had thought it was a good idea to have them over for some sort of alliance. My mind wandered back to the rumors I heard about the ShadowBlood Pack's Alpha, Ragnar, I trembled as hot and cold shivers chased themselves down my spine. Ragnar was calm, but also one of the most ruthless Alphas on the coast. "They said Kieran's uncle is a Shadow-wolf shifter. Their father cut him off the link, twenty years ago, for killing another pack's alpha when he was just a juvenile wolf." I scoffed beside her, Kayla always seemed to know all the gossip, "And, you heard this, where exactly?" She dropped the flower basket she held unto the balcony, leaning back with her lithe frame against the wall, her porcelain skin glowing under the bright sunlight that gleamed through the entrance. "It's no news. I grew up with these stories, you don't know this because you're not from here." True. I belonged to no pack, all I knew was the life here, where I was forced to face dejection all through childhood. Small jolts of pain coursed through me at her words. She turned to face me, her expression shifting when she saw my face, "i'm so sorry. I didn't mention that to hurt you," "I know, Kayla." I replied curtly. We continued on in silence, when we were done, I walked back to my room that had been inside the basement, clicking the bulb on I gazed at the nearly worn out peach wallpaper with a few poster of my favorite boy bands stuck to the wall. I adjusted the lamp on my desk, picking the bracelet that had once been a gift from Kieran, and shoving it into the bin next to the bed. It was almost time for the celebration and the alpha had requested every pack member's presence for his brother's welcome, including mine. Rummaging through my wardrobe I picked out a sunflower pattered crop top on jean shorts. Rushing to the bathroom I quickly showered and changed into the clothes I'd chosen. Donning on a pair of Crocs I headed for the main pack house that was just across the lake. When I'd gotten there I watched the house filled with almost all the clan members, both young and old, male and female flocked through the entire house, all engaged in one thing or the other. The young she-wolfs on the other hand were dressed in all shades of beautiful clothes I wondered if I came for the wrong occasion. I felt someone tap me from behind then I turned to see Kayla in a sheer black dress that clung to her body, revealing her exotic curves. Her eyes were layered in heavy makeup and her lips painted a bright shade of red. "Rowan!" she breathed before smoothing the edge of her dress."Finally! I've been waiting for you." I tried to hide the frown that had begun to etch itself on my face, wondering why she was waiting for me, "Why is everyone dressed up?" She rolled her eyes at my ignorance, "We came for the Alpha.” she mused. “Ragnar?” I scoffed. "Yes! Rumors says he's very handsome and very unmated." Kayla squealed excitedly. I shook my head in frustration, leaning over to face her. “He's part Shadow-Shifter too. Remember? All Shadow-wolf shifters are rogues! Don't you know what that means?!” She chuckled at my words, flicking my temples playfully. “Rogue or not, I'd still very much love to be his chosen Luna. Alpha Cyril has given his orders to have all unmated She-wolves gather by the lake. Just for his bother to make his pick. And...I also heard Selene would be joining too.”
