Avery watched as the sun rose in the distance. The colors much more vivid to her enhanced eyes. Months had passed since her transition and everything was easier.
When Bella found out about everything, immediately she demanded to see Avery. Of course, Avery begged, and they were finally able to see each other. Avery was placed between Jasper and Emmett, both of the boys holding tightly to the girl.
Bella was brought in the entrance, but she and Edward waited at the bottom. "How are you doing?"
Avery took a small breath just to test it out. She smelled her cousin's strawberry shampoo, but that was it. "Her scent...isn't appealing. It's like when I was human."
Carlisle was in front of Avery instantly. "You don't feel any burning in your throat at all?"
The brunette shook her head. "No, Bella smells the same as she always has. I can just smell her from far away now."
"So, she's more like a dog." Emmett joked, earning a slight glare from Jasper.
Edward shook his head, but a playful smile tugged at his lips. "Alright, we're coming up." She heard movement and heard Edward speak to Bella. "Remember, Avery is a newborn. She hasn't gotten complete control over everything, so take it slow."
Avery felt the tears well up in her eyes as soon as Bella came into view. She never thought she could miss someone more than she missed her late father, but she had.
Bella gasped slightly when she caught sight of Avery. She looked, well, beautiful. Avery's dark brown hair had softened to a dark caramel color, her skin turned to the color of porcelain, just as smooth and perfect too.
The only feature that seemed to change drastically, were her eyes. Once the color of melted chocolate, were now a deep crimson. They were startling, but so mesmerizing at the same time.
"Avery.." Bella muttered, barely above a whisper, but it was heard by everyone in the house.
"It's good to see you again, Bella." She paused, really thinking over her next question. "How is...How is Charlie?"
Bella bit her lower lip and averted her gaze from the newborn. How was she to break it gently? "He'll be okay." She decided it would be best to leave out how broken Charlie had been the past few days.
Avery didn't have to ask anything else. The look on Bella's face was enough. "Excuse me. I need a minute." Using her speed, she vanished from the room. She wasn't sure where she was going exactly, she just needed to get away from everything.
Her body stopped on its own as the sound of animals moving caught her attention. She surveyed her surroundings. Nothing that sounded that large should be so close to the house, not with their scent all over at least.
Walking at a human pace, she made her way towards the sound. She came to a sudden drop, a stream flowing between and on the other side, she saw wolves. Two giant wolves stood on the other side, watching her. One was slightly bigger than the other, his fur black as a starless sky. The other was a bit shorter, his fur was a light tan color, but it wasn't quite as light as sand.
She tilted her head and studied these creatures. She had never seen or even heard of wolves getting this big. She stepped towards the edge and the wolves reacted. Their ears flattened and they snarled at her, causing her to step back a bit.
They were territorial. She held her hands up as a sign of surrender. "Man, today just keeps getting worse and worse. First I find out my uncle is taking my so called death really harsh and I can't just show up to make things better because I'm technically a danger to him and now I have wolves even growling at me." She flopped to the ground, placing her head in her hands. "Why me? I don't understand...why now?"
"Things occur when they are meant to." She looked up, the wolves had somewhat backed into the treeline, but she could still see them. She turned to look behind herself to see Esme, walking towards her. "I thought you could use some company."
The matriarch vampire moved to sit down beside Avery. She looked over to the newborn, a kind smile on her face. "I just wish it wouldn't have happened now. My uncle just lost his brother...and now his niece."
Esme wrapped her arms around the smaller woman. "I believe Jasper has found a way around that, but it is completely up to you. If you don't feel comfortable, then we can dismiss the idea."
Avery looked up at her, urging her to go on. "We could tell Charlie that you're not dead, just that you were moved to a very intensive care center to recover. We could say that you had to undergo plastic surgeries and that you may be able to return in a year and a half."
She could have Charlie back? She could go back to school? Her heart would have been racing had it still been beating at all. She hugged Esme tightly, a smile pulling at her lips. "Of course! I want to do this!"
She could continue with her normal life.
Or at least she thought she could. Until they returned.
