Avery had taken notice to how close Edward and Bella had become in such a short amount of time. Bella wasn't the only one being pulled into the ranks of the Cullens, it seemed as though every time she turned around Avery was met with Alice or Jasper or both at her side, though it was mostly Alice. It still felt as though a wall was between Jasper and Avery. Anytime she would get too close, he would throw the wall up and retreat.
She sighed as she walked out of the school. Bella had already left with Edward, and Avery had hung back to finish a report due for English so it was no surprise that the parking lot was almost empty when she walked out.
Almost. The brunette quickly took notice of a familiar blonde waiting by her car, leaning on it with his arms crossed. It surprised her really. "What's up?" She called once she was close enough to him.
"You are difficult to stay away from.." The statement caused her to freeze as she stared at Jasper in confusion. "Every time I try to step away and put distance between us, this....invisible force pulls me right back...it's frustrating."
She unlocked her car and threw her bag in the backseat before she moved to stand in front of him. "And why exactly have you been trying to distance yourself?" She questioned, her gaze never leaving his. "Did I do something?"
Guilt instantly set in the vampire's unbeating heart. "No, it's not you. It's me."
"Why does this sound like a cheesy break up?"
Jasper couldn't help but chuckle at this. "It does sound that way." His smile vanished as he became serious once more, "but it's true. I'm not good for you."
Avery narrowed her eyes at this and crossed her arms over her chest. "You don't get to decide what is or isn't good for me, y'know. Besides, what could be so wrong with you, aside from your horrible mood swings?"
Jasper wanted to laugh at this, but he kept a straight face. "Look, I'm doing this to keep you safe. You need to stay away from us. My family and myself...or you're going to get hurt." He didn't give her time to answer before he walked over to Rosalie's car and got in.
She was in shock. Jasper Hale had told her to stay away when it was him and his sister who never left her side for weeks. To say she wasn't hurt would be a lie, she had grown attached to the pixie-like girl and her moody adopted brother. When she was around them it was like all of the sorrow from her past that always threatened to consume her vanished.
They made her feel whole and he was ripping that away. It felt as though a hole had been punched into her chest as she watched the car drive away. "Who needs you anyways..." She muttered to herself as she climbed into her own car and started it up.
She quickly texted Bella and Charlie telling them she was going to make a quick trip to Port Angeles to pick up more books. She just needed to drive and clear her mind.
An unexplainable rush of fear hit her when she was only thirty minutes outside of Port Angeles, but she couldn't see anything that could possibly cause it. She glanced down at her phone when it beeped, gasping and slamming on her breaks when she looked back up. Her car skidded to a halt barely three feet from what had caused her to gasp. Three people stood in the middle of the road.
A man with dreads and dark skin. A woman with bright red hair and a man with blonde hair. Something about these people caused adrenaline to begin pumping through her veins.
She watched as the red head walked to her side of the car. She rolled the window down a bit and tried to resist the urge to throw the car in reverse. The urge grew when she saw the woman's eyes. They were bright red.
The woman said nothing as she reached for the door, instead of trying to open it, she jerked it right off. The blonde placed his hands on the hood of her car, causing her to look back at him.
A scream caught in her throat as he crushed the front of the vehicle with his bare hands. She looked between the red head and the blonde before she quickly undid her seatbelt before trying to crawl across the seat to get out the other side. She didn't even make it to the passenger side before the red head had grabbed her and threw her out of the car.
She hit the concrete and rolled down the hill, a tree stump stopping her body. Avery tried to sit up and move away, but the red head was in front of her instantly. "I want this one for myself." The woman reached her hand out, taking Avery's face and turning it to the side.
Avery wanted to beg them to let her go, to spare her life, but the words were caught in her throat. She looked back up the hill expecting to see the two men, but they were gone.
Suddenly all her mind could register was an unbearable pain as she felt the woman bite into her neck. Avery tried to claw her off, to shove her, hit her, but nothing worked.
Her mind began to go foggy as the world around her blurred. She was really going to die. She could hear muffled screams and her body suddenly hit the ground.
'You were given this life because you are strong enough to live it.'
Her father's words rang loudly in her head as she held back the tortured screams that threatened to spill. The searing pain of the venom working its way through her veins.
Tears threatened to spill as a blurry figure leaned over her. "Don't worry, I'm here." He sounded like an angel. "I promise, you'll be okay."
She felt someone touch her hair. "You'll be safe and sound when this is over." Came another angelic voice, this one more familiar to her.
Slowly the pain began to fade starting at her toes and her body relaxed. Her eyelids grew heavy as she listened to the two angels talking to one another. "Safe and sound with me..." The pain seemed to stop until another wave hit her. This was far more excruciating.
Avery begged them to make it stop, screams tearing from her throat as she thrashed around. The pain only got worse as the internal fire neared her heart.
The screams and the crying stopped as her body went limp. "What's happening? She went still far too quickly."
"Her body couldn't take the pain anymore. She's unconscious. We should burn the car and get her back to the house so people will think she died in the accident."
