It felt as though Avery had been floating in darkness for years. The burning had finally stopped, but there was a dull ache that ran through her body.
"Avery..." A soft, feminine voice called out to her in the darkness. "I know it's easier to hide in the darkness, but you have to wake up." A soft light broke through the blackness above her.
She didn't hesitate to reach for it and pull herself back into the conscious world. Her body sat up straight as she took in a deep inhale. The last thing she could remember was the woman attacking her.
Her eyes darted around the room for the red head, but she only found Alice. "Alice?" Her own voice caused her to pause. It was like smooth silk. "What happened? How did I get here?"
Alice had a sorrowful look in her eyes as she approached Avery slowly. "I suppose I should just be blunt." She started. "Avery, my family and I...we're vampires. The people who attacked you were also vampires."
Vampires? Was she crazy? "Haha, very funny Alice."
Alice shook her head, holding out a pocket mirror. "Take a look at yourself."
Avery slowly reached out, taking the mirror from Alice. As soon as her gaze met the mirror's, she almost dropped it. Her eyes looked the same as the red haired woman's. As she looked closer, she noticed her skin had become significantly paler and her hair looked so much healthier.
Avery had never once thought of herself as anywhere near beautiful, but the woman looking back at her was stunning. She looked back at Alice, distress filling her. "I don't understand..."
"Our kind has...venom, and when we bite someone we're able to pass that venom into their system. It turns them into us." Alice explained as she took the mirror and set it down, taking Avery's hands in her own. "Avery, I'm so sorry...I should have seen this coming, but you made the decision to go to Port Angeles so quickly it blindsided me."
A look of confusion passed over the brunette's face. "What do you mean that you should have seen it?"
Alice gave a dry laugh. "Right, some of our kind obtain gifts when they're changed. I have visions of the future, but they're all based on decisions. It's never set in stone."
Avery nodded, most of it sticking. "So, after I decided to go to Port Angeles...?"
"I saw you getting attacked. Jasper and Carlisle rushed to your side as quick as they could..." Alice looked down. "We never wanted this life to be shoved on you."
"It shouldn't have even been a possibility." The two girls looked to the doorway to see Jasper leaning against the door frame. "If...If we never would have crossed paths..."
"Don't say that..." Avery cut him off causing the two to look at her. "Sure, you can be a pain sometimes Jasper, but...I need you two." She took in a deep breath, taking note that this was the first time that she had actually breathed. Jasper leaned forward a bit as she spoke. "You two would always make all of the pain in my past disappear. Like, none of it happened." She looked down at her hands that were still holding Alice's. "It's a bit selfish..."
"It's not," Alice interrupted, "because I felt the same. Something about you just...makes me happy. It does it to all of us." Jasper silently agreed. Ever since he had met Avery there was this warmth that seemed to pull them all in, made their past unimportant. It made them feel actually complete.
Avery gave a dry laugh. "So, is that my gift? To be a personal ray of sunshine?" She tried to joke.
Alice laughed a bit at this before she slowly let go of her hands. "You have a lot to learn still, but first we should hunt." She noticed the look of horror that crossed Avery's face "Oh! No. We only feed from animals. We're vegetarians."
"Oh the irony."
Jasper and Alice smiled at this. She was definitely taking it better than they had expected her to. Alice moved beside her and placed her arms around the brunette's shoulder. "You'll be hunting with Rosalie, Emmett and I today."
Avery glanced at Jasper. "What about you?"
He shook his head and offered a slight smile. "Already went. Besides, I offered to help Carlisle put together something to make understanding all of this a bit simpler." He pushed off the door frame and walked over to her. Taking her hand in his own, he brought it to his lips. "I'll see you when you get back." With that, he ran out the door in a blur.
"We also have inhuman speed. Strength as well." Alice said matter of factly. "Come on, I see you catching on quick." With one last smile at the brunette Alice ran out as well.
