No matter how hard Avery tried, she couldn't bring herself to go to sleep that night. The memory of that van almost crushing Bella replayed in her mind every time her eyes closed.
Pushing the covers off her body, she got out of bed and slid on a pair of sweats over her shorts. Grabbing a jacket and sliding on shoes, she exited the house as quietly as possible. A walk in the night air would usually calm her mind back home, maybe it would help here as well.
As soon as she stepped onto the porch, the cool air surrounded her, sending chills along her skin even though it was covered by a jacket. Pulling the fabric tight around her body, she began walking with no real destination in mind.
She allowed her thoughts to wander, jumping around to the pleasant memories she shared with her father, to his dead and even back to the incident with Bella.
"Where are you off to?" A voice called out, causing her to jump. She spun around quickly to see a man wearing a baggy sweatshirt with the hood over his face. "Little girls shouldn't wander the streets alone." His tone was mocking as he began to walk towards her.
"She isn't alone. I suggest you keep walking." A familiar voice called from behind her. Glancing back, she saw Rosalie standing with her arms crossed.
"Aww, little bit and me were just chatting."
"The lady said keep walking." Emmett emerged from the woods that took up the side of the road. Avery was taken back by the look on Emmett's face. She usually saw a smile on his face, but now...he looked terrifying.
The man wasn't too stupid, Avery noticed as he shoved his hands in his pockets and began to walk in the opposite direction, muttering to himself.
She turned to Rosalie, not even sure why the blonde came to her aide in the first place. "Thank you, but you're the last person I expected to help me in...any situation."
The blonde looked somewhat amused. "It's true that you're not my most favorite person at the moment, but I wouldn't be able to forgive myself if I would have just kept walking while you were in trouble like that." Rosalie knew all too well what that was like.
"What are you doing out at three in the morning anyways? You have school tomorrow." Emmett butt in.
Avery scrunched her nose at how much like a dad he sounded. "I couldn't sleep."
"How come?" Even Rosalie hadn't expected the question to come tumbling out of her own mouth.
Avery took a deep breath as she mentally fought with herself. Should she really spill her guts to them? Deciding that it did her no good to bottle it up, she shrugged before speaking. "The image of that van almost crushing Bella keeps replaying in my head. It reminds me of the wreck that killed my dad..." She glanced up at them, noticing the looks that told her to keep going. "We were on our way back from the movies, we always went on Fridays. It was just him and me since mom was sick, and it was raining." At this point she was practically reliving it. "We stopped at a red light, waiting and all of a sudden headlights came over the curb. A drunk driver had jumped the curb running from the cops and smashed right into my dad's side. He died on impact and I was put in a coma for three months..." Tears were falling freely at this point. "I had missed my own dad's funeral...and the court hearing for the man who murdered him."
Emmett glanced at Rosalie. Even from where he stood he could see the tears that glazed over her eyes, but would never fall. "Is he at least in jail?" Emmett asked the question knowing Rosalie wanted to know, but would never ask.
Avery nodded slowly at his question. "For now. He has a parol hearing in two years." She kept tabs on that man. Pulling out her phone, she glanced at the time and quickly wiped her face. "I should get back home. Charlie leaves for work at five."
"We'll give you a ride." Rosalie stated before she could even stop the words. She glanced at Emmett who nodded.
"I'll go get the jeep then." He walked back into the woods and disappeared.
Avery looked after him confused. "There's a trail that circles around to where we parked the jeep. We always come through here early for a run." She lied quickly.
Something was still suspicious about it, but she let it drop for now. She jumped when headlights were suddenly on them, but her body relaxed when she noticed it was the Jeep that Rosalie had mentioned.
She climbed out of the vehicle when they reached her house, looking back to the couple. "Thank you again." She said before shutting the door. She quickly walked inside, hearing the jeep drive off just as she closed the door.
------------
"You like her." Emmett teased his wife.
Rosalie rolled her eyes, gazing out the window as they drove home. "She's still a human." She still sounded annoyed, "but she is a bit less annoying."
Emmett howled in laughter at this, causing the blonde to c***k a slight smile.
Her gaze shifted up to the sky as she thought about the human girl. Something about her seemed to be pulling the entirety of the Cullen siblings to her. It could potentially end in a very devastating way if the siblings didn't tread lightly.
