A week passed by and Avery noticed that Edward had returned, but Jasper was still MIA. For some reason, it really bugged her.
"Avery!"
She snapped out of her thoughts and looked around the lunch table to see them all looking at her. "Huh?"
Mike grinned at this "Eric and I were asking if you wanted to go to the movies tonight?"
Avery internally cringed when she thought of having to sit through a whole movie with Mike. Sure he was sweet, but his endless passes at her and her cousin were suffocating.
"Actually, she has plans with me." Came a soft bell like voice. When the group turned towards it, Alice stood with a wide grin on her face. "You were supposed to go shopping with me. Remember?"
Avery knew it was a lie, but didn't hesitate to agree. "Right. I remember."
"We'll take your car then. See you after school." With that she walked away, not even glancing back at the table.
Mike looked at Avery, his lips pursed. "You and Alice are friends, huh?"
Avery's gaze never left the other girl. She watched as the blonde began to whisper something to her as soon as Alice sat down. "Yeah, I guess you could say that." Avery glanced at her watch before she got up to toss her untouched food in the trash. "I'm heading to class, I have to finish up some homework." She excused herself as she walked passed the table once more.
Stepping out into the empty halls, she let out a breath she hadn't realized that she had even been holding.
Silence was all that met Avery's ears as she made her way to her locker, her own footfall leaving no echo to be heard. She opened her locker and threw a few books in, swapping them out for the last ones she would need. As soon as she shut the metal door, she had to stifle a scream.
Leaning against the lockers, patiently waiting next to her, was Jasper Hale. "I heard that you've been looking for me?" He seemed uninterested, but even Avery could see the spark of curiosity in those dark eyes.
"Yeah, I have. I was going to ask what your deal was when we first met?"
Jasper arched a brow at this. "I wasn't feeling well. I've been out sick this whole time." He lied smoothly and it looked as though Avery believed him.
She rolled her eyes at him and shifted her books in her arms. "What are you doing here so late anyways? School is almost over."
He motioned in the direction of the entrance. "I was dropping off a doctor's excuse." His tone was flat as if what he said was the most obvious thing in the world. "When I walked out of the office, you were walking down the hall, you looked upset?"
She shook her head and laughed slightly. The sound caused the burn to return in his throat. "No, I'm not upset. I was just thinking about what Alice could possibly be planning for me, considering I barely know her, and we apparently have plans after school."
Jasper's body tensed at this statement. "She did what?" Even though he asked, he didn't give her time to respond to his question. He turned and walked away quickly.
He had told Alice and the others that Avery was not going to get involved with them. He wouldn't be able to even stand himself if something happened to her.
The bell rang as he stopped in front of the lunch room to wait for Alice. She was the last one to walk out, an almost timid smile on her face when she saw Jasper.
She had seen him coming. "We need to talk." He whispered, making sure only she heard it.
"You can't change my mind Jazz. Besides, it's only a little shopping." She didn't give him time to argue. "She's going to become a part of our family whether you bring her in or not." With that said, Alice patted his chest as she made her way to her next class, humming softly to herself.
