Avery did nothing but arrange her room as she waited for Bella to get home. Occasionally she would glance at her clock or even check to see if her mom might have called, but the latter was a long stretch. She paused in rearranging her closet for the fifth time when she heard the loud engine of Bella's truck. Bella honked the horn twice and that was Avery's cue. She checked over her outfit, having gone for dark jeans, a tank top and her dad's old navy blue jacket. Slipping on her high tops, she was out the door.
"Hey, Bells." She greeted with a smile as she slid into the old dinosaur of a truck.
"It's good to see you again." Bella offered a slight smile as she pulled out. "How was your flight?"
Avery rolled her eyes and gave a slight laugh. "We are not going to sit here and talk about a boring ass flight. Tell me about school. Friends? Boyfriends? Crushes?" She wanted so bad to keep the focus off of her.
Bella made a face at the word crushes. "Well, he isn't a crush, but there is this guy. He's been a real jerk since I met him, and I haven't said one word to him."
Of course it had to be the typical bit of teenage drama. "Just forget about him then. If he wants to act like an ass, then I say he isn't worth your time."
It was silent for a moment before Bella spoke again. "I had planned to talk to him about it today, but he wasn't there."
Avery's eyebrows pulled together in confusion. "Weird..maybe it was just a coincidence and he was out sick?"
She shrugged, giving a quiet maybe. The truck had went silent, the silent hum of low music on the radio was the only thing heard until they pulled into a dealership. Many cars looked interesting to her, but what really stood out was the black, 2004 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class.
She hopped out as soon as Bella had put the car in park, walking over to it. It was exactly like the one her dad had owned, only a couple of years newer. "This is it..." She muttered to herself.
"Isn't that a bit flashy?" Bella asked, walking over.
Avery looked back at her cousin. "Perhaps for you, but...I think it's perfect." She had always loved her dad's car and he had promised to get her one for her first car.
Bella watched in silence as her cousin managed to sweet talk the salesman to knock off $1,500 from the price and soon, the keys were in her hands.
"I'll see you back at the house. I'm gonna get gas and do a little shopping, I have to grab some stuff for a project." Bella awkwardly excused herself after she had checked her phone.
Avery nodded and walked over to her car. "See you there." Was all she said in reply as she climbed into the vehicle. Memories of her dad teaching her to drive his car came flooding back to her as she pulled out and began the long drive home.
Home. It would take her some time to actually believe that the Swan house was home. Of course, she loved her uncle and cousin, but it wasn't like living with her dad.
By the time she snapped out of her stupor, she was parked in the driveway of the Swan residence. As she got out of the car, Charlie was just walking out of the house dressed fully for work. He let out a low whistle as he saw the car his niece had. "That is very nice, Ave." He complimented, looking it over. "Looks like..." He trailed off.
Avery only nodded. "Yeah, he had always promised that he would get me one when I could drive." Usually she would be in tears at this point, but it seemed as though her tears had dried up. "You headed to work?" She asked, looking over to him.
"Yeah, got a call about some punks causing trouble." He didn't seem overly excited. "I'll probably be back late, you girls don't wait up." He gave her a short wave before he got into his car.
Avery waited until she couldn't see his cruiser anymore before she locked her car and went inside. She ate a bowl of cereal before she decided to head to bed early. She could tell that it was going to be a long day tomorrow.
