"You don't owe them anything." Not "Kill him." Not "Pick up the knife." Not a single word about violence. Just five ordinary words: "You don't owe them anything." The prosecutor questioned me for sixteen hours straight. "Who exactly are 'they'?" "Was that some kind of code you two agreed on to cover up a murder?" I told him the same thing I'd told everyone else: I'd said it to comfort her. "You comforted her twice, and three people ended up dead?" The prosecutor slammed a file onto the table. "You really expect a jury to believe that?" "Whether they believe me is for the jury to decide. Proving it was a code is your job." The police searched my apartment and my clinic.
