On the day my ex-girlfriend Audrey Whitmore got married, I whispered five words in her ear.

The next second, she picked up the knife and killed the groom.

Six years later, I said the same five words to her again.

This time, she killed her own parents.

Everyone was convinced I had incited her to murder.

It was not until the recording was released that they discovered all I had said was...

Chapter 1
On the day Audrey Whitmore got married, I walked into St. Margaret's Church in a black dress. I hadn't been invited. I wasn't there to offer congratulations. Six years earlier, she'd thrown me out of the Whitmore estate in the middle of a downpour and made it clear she never wanted to see me again. Now she stood beneath the stained-glass windows, her arm linked with her fiancé's, a white veil cascading down her back. She wore the kind of flawless smile people practiced for photographs. Then the whispers started. The guests recognized me. "Isn't that Evelyn Reed?" "Audrey's ex-girlfriend?" "Is she here to stop the wedding?" Their whispers followed me through the church, needling me with every step. Audrey's mother, Vivian Whitmore, pushed through the crowd and blocked my path. "You're not welcome." She kept her voice low, but her smile never cracked. A camera was pointed at her, and Vivian always knew which side of herself to show the lens. I looked past her. Audrey met my eyes for only a second before tightening her grip on the groom's arm. "Mom, let her stay," Nathan Caldwell said, wearing a practiced smile. "Evelyn's an old friend of Audrey's, after all. We'd look a lot worse if people thought we were scared of her." He put extra weight on the words "old friend." They seated me near the exit, with a security guard stationed on either side of me. The wedding unfolded like clockwork. Every detail had been planned down to the last second. The vows, the rings, the kiss, the applause—nothing went wrong. Not until the reception, when the emcee invited the newlyweds to cut their nine-tier wedding cake together. The guests raised their phones. I picked up my wineglass and walked over. The guards tried to stop me, but the sudden crush of people gathering for pictures knocked them aside. I reached Audrey's side. Her hand shook around the knife. Nathan covered it with his own and reminded her with a smile, "Darling, look at the camera." I bent down and whispered five words in her ear. Audrey's trembling stopped. She turned to me. The obedient look in her gray-blue eyes disappeared, replaced by something cold and resolute. The next second, she ripped the cake knife from the table and drove it into Nathan's chest. Once. Twice. Three times. Blood spread across her white gown in seconds. Even after Nathan fell, she straddled his body and kept stabbing him—17 times in all. Screams tore through the ballroom. Some people ran. Some vomited. Others kept filming with their phones. Vivian screamed at her daughter to stop, but Audrey acted as if she couldn't hear her. She did not drop the knife until the police arrived. Then she calmly held out both hands. Before they put her in handcuffs, she looked at me through the chaos. And smiled.
