Chapter 4

He followed me into the room. When he saw the pile of new things, he finally couldn't hold back his laughter. “You bought all this? I already have most of it. You really didn't need to buy so much...” As he spoke, he started gathering everything into his arms. “Wait!” I hurriedly reached out to take the things back, but he tightened his grip and refused to let go. Lucian would be arriving tomorrow. I could always buy another gift, but I couldn't exactly make a new companion use secondhand stuff, could I? I gritted my teeth. “These aren't for you.” I tugged at the bags. He still wouldn't let go. So I repeated myself. “These things aren't for you. A new companion is coming tomorrow, so—” He stared at me. His voice seemed to change. “A new companion?” “Then what about me?” “What am I?” He suddenly released his grip. Everything came crashing to the floor. I rubbed my temples, already getting a headache. I sighed and started picking everything up again. “Why don't you go outside for a while?” But he wouldn't budge. His eyes were red. “So... the gift isn't for me either?” Looking at his still-bleeding ears, I couldn't bring myself to be completely heartless. “That earring was specially bought for you—” “You're lying!” He cut me off. I was exhausted. “Fine! It wasn't for you. You were the one who snatched it and put it on!” He gave a cold little laugh. “What’s so special about it?” A tentacle wrapped around the earring. He yanked hard. The earring came off, trailing blood, and was viciously slammed onto the floor. “Here. Take it back.” Then he turned around and left, slamming the door so hard the entire room shook. Ugh. That was money. I gathered up the broken pieces. I had planned to try putting them back together, but after searching everywhere, I realized one of the bells was missing. Whatever. I'd deal with it tomorrow. ...... “My tentacle monster is so annoying!” I complained to my best friend over the phone. “I bought stuff for the little fox today, and then he just...” “Don't even get me started. Mine does the exact same thing!” She sighed. “Last time I bought litter for my cat, he said it meant I didn't care about him anymore. But—” “Stop teasing me and get to the point,” I urged. “But I got smarter afterward.” She lowered her voice, as if she were worried someone might overhear. “Just don't let them stay in the same space.” “Doesn't the store offer free boarding? Send him back first. Once everything's settled, then—” Before she could finish, a cold male voice suddenly came from her side. “So the owner has already found someone else?” Another male voice answered, sweet as honey. “Then let the owner choose one and obediently accept the punishment.” My friend's voice immediately became frantic. “Baby, something urgent came up. I've gotta go.” The cold male voice sounded again. “Looks like the owner has other pets too—” Beep. Beep. Beep. The call abruptly ended. My best friend was dead. Before I could even mourn her, I immediately called customer service. “I want to apply for boarding service for Adrian.” 【Of course, sweetie! But the maximum boarding period is three months. How about we deliver Lucian tomorrow and pick up Adrian at the same time?】 “Umm... I'll think about it.”
