The next day, the doorbell rang right on schedule.
A retrieval worker arrived carrying a huge stasis pod.
And behind him stood a tall, slender figure.
—He wore a moon-white robe, the collar slightly open to reveal his delicate collarbones.
Two fluffy fox ears twitched lazily atop his head.
My eyes practically popped out of my head.
As a seasoned furry enthusiast, I desperately wanted to rush over and give him a few good scritches!
To make matters worse, he was wearing a black earring, adding an extra touch of wildness.
But before I could even get close, Adrian let out a cold laugh.
“Where'd this filthy fox come from? He reeks!”
His tentacles whipped wildly behind him, looking ready to attack at any moment.
I froze.
This was the first time I'd ever heard Adrian insult someone so viciously.
Lucian, however, merely sniffed the air.
Then he pinched his nose.
“Oh? Where'd this seafood come from? He smells so fishy.”
“Got returned, did you? Go right back where you came from. Don't dirty the owner's eyes.”
“You wanna die?”
Adrian gritted his teeth.
A tentacle shot violently toward Lucian.
Lucian effortlessly tilted his head aside and folded his arms, mocking him.
“What, that's all you've got?”
“You can only scare people with those ugly little things?”
......
The two of them went back and forth, neither willing to give an inch.
Until Lucian suddenly curved his eyes into a smile.
“Right. What am I doing listening to you bark?”
“You're nothing but defective merchandise that can be thrown away whenever the owner gets tired of you.”
“If the owner doesn't care about you, then I don't care either!”
Adrian instantly fell silent.
His tentacles drooped.
At that moment, the retrieval worker stepped forward.
“Time for retrieval. Please get into the stasis pod.”
Adrian turned around and looked deeply at me.
His lips moved.
But in the end, he said nothing.
Watching his lonely retreating figure, I had the strange feeling that I'd forgotten to tell him something.
......
Now only Lucian and I remained in the living room.
Since we'd only just met, I felt awkward and didn't quite know what to do.
Without realizing it, I thought of Adrian.
He was quiet by nature, so most of the time, I was the one following him around and talking nonstop.
But now, the situation was completely reversed.
Lucian was an absolute chatterbox!
The moment he entered the room, he walked around the entire living room, pointing out everything he disliked.
“The color of this sofa is so tacky.”
“The curtains are so rough. They're lowering my standards just by existing.”
“And this table!”
He pointed at it with disgust.
“It's so ugly it hurts my eyes. It has to go!”
He kept going without pause.
I followed behind him, able to do nothing but nod along.
“Mhm... yeah... you're right... it is pretty ugly...”
Finally, the young master got tired of criticizing everything.
He collapsed onto the sofa, his fluffy tail flicking lazily.
“I'm hungry, Master. Cook something.”
I thought—
It was time to show off my true skills!
Back in the day, even Adrian, an actual professional chef, had praised my cooking.
He always devoured everything and never left a single bite behind.
So, really, I was something of a culinary genius myself!
Half an hour later, I proudly carried two dishes to the table.
“Try them!”
I smiled confidently.
“I'm in a good mood today, so I cooked for you personally!”
Lucian eagerly picked up a bite of tomato and scrambled eggs.
But the moment he put it in his mouth, his expression changed dramatically.
He suddenly spat out a piece of eggshell.
Then he gulped down a huge glass of water.
“Did you rob a salt factory?!”
He clutched his throat.
“It's so salty!”
His eyes were watery.
But he refused to give up.
He picked up a piece of spicy stir-fried green beans.
He chewed twice.
Then his expression completely collapsed, and he spat it straight into the trash.
“The green beans aren't even cooked!”
He looked at me in disbelief.
“If you wanted to poison me, you could've just said so!”
“That can't be...”
I took a bite.
Then silence fell.
Silence, tonight's Cambridge.
Only at that moment did everything finally click.
No wonder Adrian had always finished my cooking without ever letting me taste it.
Sigh.
We stared at the disastrous dishes in silence.
“You know how to cook?”
Lucian shook his head furiously.
“I cook even worse than you!”
In the end, I silently picked up my phone.
“...How about we order takeout?”
