Prologue
“YOU STUPID b***h!”
“I wake up to yelling and screaming. I knew it was coming from down stairs. It’s always coming from down stairs. I hide under my Lion King blanket covering my ears with my hands because it’s so loud. Even with the rain clashing against my window and the thunder roaring it’s still not enough to drown out the shouting. Lightening lights the darks skies and my room. Tears falling down my face as I hope it will all be over soon. A few minutes later I hear glass breaking and mommy scream out. Out from under the blanket I hurry out of my bed and silently creep out of my room to the hallway. Reaching the top of the stairs I see broken glass scattered on the grey carpet. There’s broken vases everywhere and holes in the creme white walls. We live in a two bedroom apartment and for a while it was just mommy and I. We didn’t have a lot of money but she did best she could as a single mom with no family support. I had a lot go toys and always had food to eat. Then one day she met Bob at the diner where she works, then Bob moved in with us. Around the living room the soft brown couches circle each other, and a big tv on the wall for us to watch tv. That’s when every thing started to change. There was less money because he would spend it all on beer and stuff. And when she didn’t have any extra money to give he started hitting her.
When I arrive to the steps I see the chaos. Mommy’s body is laying on the carpet floor with blood stains ruining her favorite pink nightgown. Her shoulder length brown hair looks tangled and matted with blood all in it. Her once big brown eyes are blackened and barely open cause of the swelling. You can hear her crying as Bob stands over her limp body. He also looks unrecognizable when I look at him. He’s mommy’s boyfriend and he’s mean to us. He has blonde hair and big arms like a wrestler. He’s scary and I don’t like him. All he does is hit mommy and take her money. His torn white t-shirt and dark blue jeans are also stained with blood. With his black combat boots he kicks her in the stomach. Still at the top of the stairs I cry harder because of the a***e she’s taking. She doesn’t even look like her usual bubbly pretty self. Mustarding up the courage I race to Bob to try to stop him from hurting her anymore. I grab his shirt as hard as any five year old can trying to pull him away from her.
“Bob Leave my mommy alone!” I shout.
With a wicked laugh, and a Devil’s grin he grabs my shirt by the collar and hits smacks me across the face, hard. I fall to the ground crying because my face burns. He then leans down to me and slaps me in the again. “Stay in a child’s place you little shit.” He barks pulling me up before throwing me back to the ground. The back of my head bounces off the ground. “Leave him alone you son of a b***h!” Mom cries out through mascara tears and a snotty nose, as she’s trying to get up off the floor. Again all he does is his monster like laugh and walk back over to her. I kept crying as he continued his assault on her, hitting her over and over and over again. Her face bleeding and swollen. “AHHH!“ Bob yells out. Suddenly everything went quiet. I look over to see Bob on the floor with a piece of broken glass sticking out the side of his stomach. Mom franticly sprints over to me, snatching me up and head for the stairs back to my room. Locking the door behind us she sets me on the bed. She rushes over to grabs my Lion King backpack and starts shoving my clothes in it. She then goes under my bed and pulls out my favorite light up shoes and helps me put them on. Mom rushes to my closet and pulls out my winter jacket and puts it on me. I look at her with a fear and confusion as she moves around in a hurry. After my jacket is on she goes to the top of my closet and pulls out our secret emergency money and shoved all the money in my jacket pockets. She looks at me with tears running down her face. I cradle her swollen right cheek and try to wipe away her tears. She smiles and hugs me and I hug her back before she pulls us apart. Mom leans into me and places a long soft kiss on my forehead.
“When I tell you too, mommy needs you to run okay. Run far far away, and don’t look back.” She pleads with dark mascara tears in her eyes. “But mommy? What about you, aren’t you coming with me?” I question staring back at her. “ It’s okay mommy will be fine, I promise. I’ll be right behind you. Mommy promise okay. “b***h! YOU AND THAT BASTARD GET OUT HERE NOW!” Bob said making us both jump as he pounded on the door. She looked at me again with a smile as the tears keep falling. “It’s okay you don’t have to be scared anymore baby. You need to run, run fast and don’t look back and you’ll be safe. Grow up and be happy, do you hear me? Don’t depend on no one don’t trust no one.” She kisses my cheek. “I love you so so so so much baby, try to remember that okay. And I’m sorry.” Bob continues to pound on the door. “NANCY I SWEAR TO GOD I WILL BREAK THIS GODDAMN DOOR DOWN!” She stands up and grabs my plastic toy bat before pushes me behind her just as the door is kicked down. Bob storms towards us and mommy swings the bat across Bob’s face with every muscle in her body. She continues to hit him before he grabs the bat and they start struggling over it. Moving him away from the door. She turned to me and yelled “Run Now!”
Passed Bob, down the steps and out the front door I went. Running as fast as I can along the concrete sidewalk. Not knowing where I was going. I just pick a direction and ran. I kept running even though I was getting soaked. The rain hasn’t lighten up and the ground is slippery underneath my shoes. I ran for a long time before stopping. I’m so scared, cold and alone. I walk for a long time until I see a bench with a bus sign stand next it. The bus stop has an arch that would shelter me from the rain. Decided that I was far enough from my house, I sit down on the bench. Not really knowing what to do next. A long time passes and cars passed by but there was no bus, or mommy. After a while more cars continue to past me by. The rain fall is constant and the wind began to blow. Then one black Toyota Camry ride passed me but unlike the other cars this one stopped a few feet past me. The car is put in reverse as it backed up and stops right in front of me. I watch hoping it was my mommy but it wasn’t. It has four doors, dark tented windows and silver rims. I can tell that it’s brand new because of how clean and shinny it is.
I sat there staring at the car not really knowing what to do.The front passenger door opens and a black older lady gets out. She had jet black hair that hangs past her cheeks, she’s wearing light blue jeans, a crewneck woven black sweater and black leather boots. She came and sat next to me on the bench, forcing my heart to beat faster and faster. “Hey little guy what are you doing out here so late?” Her voice is soft as she questions. I remained silent, as I an unable to answer or to scared too. “Where’s your parents hunny? Where’s your mommy?” She continued. But nothing came out my mouth. I didn’t even look up from the ground, because I did not know what to say. I didn’t know if my mommy was coming or not. If she was looking for me, or If it was Bob was coming after me. The tears started falling again and she wraps her long arms around me pulling me into her. We sit like this for a while, I’m guessing she’s waiting to see if someone was looking for a lost boy. “My name is Rose, can you tell me your name sweetie?” I never spoke a word as she tries to figure out what’s going on.
Eventually she gets up off the bench and crouches down in front me. “I made my husband spaghetti and garlic bread for dinner tonight. Do you wanna join us?” She smiles as she holds out her hand for me and I stare at the purple perfectly polished nails in front of me. I hesitated for a moment not sure if I could trust her or not. Not sure if I should just stay here and wait for my mom. But I nodded my head and take her hand that held a big diamond ring on it. It’s wet and cold out here and I don’t want to be out here alone anymore. Maybe she can help me and take me back to my mommy in the morning. She puts me in the back seat of the car and places the seatbelt on me before closing the door and doing the same for her self. The white man in the driver seat looks over his should and gives me a smile. He drives off and I stare out the window not sure of anything anymore. Another lone tear falls before I closed my eyes.
