I was an hour and a half late for work when I reached the bar. Ricco, my boss, was glaring at me. I didn't blame him for glaring at me. I was late. Unannounced. Giving him a small smile, I walked inside the bar, wearing the apron I was given by him. I worked as a bartender here.
"Girl, I thought you got kidnapped again." My colleague, Daisy said, making me raise my eyebrows at her as I shook my head, rubbing my arms to induce some warmth in my body. It's too cold today. Too cold for someone who barely has woolen clothes to keep herself warm.
"No, I was serving my punishment in the detention room." I said, smiling bitterly at the memory of Mr. Demetrius forced me to attend detention. That man cost me an hour and a half hour of salary. "And if you thought I had been abducted again, you were quite a good friend for not looking out for me." I said, raising my brows at her.
She laughed at my torment, shaking her head as she was making the drink for the customer in front of her.
"Looking out for you would have cost me a lot of money, girl. And tell me, Valeria, who even gets punished on their first day of college? And who even gets detention in colleges anymore?" She asked me, looking at me with newfound amusement and I rolled my eyes, running my fingers through my short hair, shaking my head.
"I was late. And the teacher so happened to hate tardiness. Forget about him. At least, the smell of alcohol is making me forget the presence of that impudent man!" I said, making her laugh. But she complied.
"One dark and stormy." A painfully familiar voice ordered when one of my rings fell down, and I bent down to pick it up. I snorted as I nodded my head, got up, wearing my rings back.
"So original......" I trailed off when my eyes met the oceanic eyes of my Chemistry teacher. And as soon as he heard my voice, his eyes snapped up to look at me. His eyes moved down from my eyes to my torso, as if he couldn't believe that his student was now going to serve him a drink.
"Miss Green?" His voice was soft, but chilly, making something inside me stir. I smiled at him, though I was as shaken as him. Besides tolerating him in school was more than enough for me to suffer his presence in the bar as well.
"Welcome to the bar, Mr. Demetrius. Please wait a couple of minutes until I get your dark and stormy ready." I said, starting with his drink. But his eyes were still on me, as if he couldn't comprehend what was happening.
"You work in a bar, Miss Green?" He asked me, and I looked up from his drink, smiling at him as I nodded my head.
"Yeah, they pay quite well for someone who has no degree." I said. "Your drink, Sir." I said, pushing his dark and stormy drink towards him, and he hummed, taking a sip of it. And I saw his eyes clenching shut as he guzzled the drink.
"Bars are not an idle place for a girl like you to work, Miss Green. These places can be dangerous for you." He said after a minute of silence, and my lips stretched in a smile at his words. Who else can know about danger better than me? I had been abused for years. I know who can be dangerous and who is harmless.
"They are. Dangerous. But they give me money. And there's nothing more important than money." I said, looking at him, tugging on my lip-ring. It never fascinated me before he asked me to remove it.
"There are many other places to work, Miss Green." He said, making me laugh as I nodded my head.
"Yeah, and I work there as well." I answered him, making him look at me with his shock-filled eyes.
"When does your shift end, Miss Green?" He asked me, making me narrow my eyes as I looked at him with amusement.
"Why, Mr. Demetrius, are you planning to kidnap me now?"
"Shut up, Miss Green! I was asking you because you need to submit the answers to me tomorrow. And I don't care how you submit the answers to me, I want your notebook on my desk tomorrow, first thing in the morning. And don't be late, I won't be so considerate tomorrow." He said, making me curl my fingers into a fist as I stared at him in anger. Was he even considerate today? I wanted to ask him.
"Don't worry, Mr. Demetrius, you'll find the answers at your table tomorrow. And have control over your drinking, Sir, we can't have you having a hangover while teaching tomorrow. Can we?" I asked him, smiling mischievously at him. And his eyes darkened when he moved closer to me, leaning closer to my face, making my heart stop beating for a split second.
"Careful, Miss Green. You may not be my student in this bar, but you'll return to my classroom tomorrow. And I am known for holding grudges very well." He said to me, making me laugh as I shook my head.
"Feels like this year will end up heavy for both of us, Mr. Demetrius. Because you don't like my presence in your classroom, and yet it's me who is making the drink for you. And leave me a good tip, I am tolerating your rude behavior here with a smile." I said, looking at him with a confident smile, shaking my head. His jaw clenched in anger as he gripped his glass in a vice grip as he glared at me.
"Get those rings off when you come to college tomorrow. Else, you can expect another detention tomorrow." With that, he left the bar, leaving me the tip of a cent. A chuckle escaped my lips as I shoved the cent inside my pants.
"Damn, girl, that man was hot!" Daisy said, looking at me with a dreamy look in her eyes and I rolled my eyes at her expression.
"And his presence is even hotter, Daisy. That man hates me. And I don't like his presence either."
...
Mr. Demetrius called inside the classroom, wearing a blue shirt and a pair of pants with an overcoat. He looked handsome. He looked handsome with his minimal efforts. It would be unfair to deny that he was a sight one could see all day. But what's the benefit of such beauty when you have a bitter tongue?
"Good morning, students, I hope you have completed your work." Mr. Demetrius said, walking inside the classroom, looking at me, expecting me to place the punishment work in front of him. So, I did.
I walked over to him, getting up from my desk, as I placed my notebook on his desk. His oceanic eyes dared to inspect me. His eyes moved up from my feet to my face. And I swear I forgot to breathe. Who knew Valeria Green cared about how she looked? But the moment his eyes were taking in my appearance, I wanted to know how I looked.
I was dressed casually. A white t-shirt and a pair of faded blue jeans. I was wearing a full-sleeved black t-shirt underneath, to protect myself from the cold weather outside.
"Miss Green, you have completed the work." He said, flipping the pages, and I nodded my head, trying to keep myself awake. After all, it took me an entire night and a few minutes at dawn to get my punishment done. Cruel being.
"You told me you wanted the work on the table first thing in the morning. So, here it is." I said, pointing towards my notebook, and he placed it down gently, leaning back against the wall, as he stared down at me.
"I also asked you to remove all of your rings yesterday. Especially that lip-piercing of yours. Why do you keep disrespecting me, Miss Green?" He asked me, making me look up at him, laughing softly, almost at the hypocrisy his words had.
"I am not disrespecting you in any way, Mr. Demetrius. But I am not breaking any laws. Neither am I breaking any kind of college rules. Only gold and precious ornaments are not allowed. And they are of cheap quality. And is my lip-piercing that troublesome for you, Sir? Because last time I checked they were on my lips....."
"Out, Miss Green." He said, his voice loud and domineering, making me blanch back as I stared at him wide-eyed.
"What?"
"Are you having any kind of hearing trouble, Miss Green? I asked you to leave the classroom. You can stand outside. Maybe that way you'll learn how to respect your teachers and elders. Otherwise, I would have to call your house....." he trailed off, realizing I had no-one in my house, making me smile even more.
I saw his eyes clenching shut, regretting the words that left his mouth. When he opened his eyes, I saw remorse in his usually cold and steely eyes, making me feel weird. I don't like it when people show me sympathy.
"I'm sorry, Miss Green, I didn't mean to...."
"It's fine, Mr. Demetrius. I understand that human beings tend to make mistakes. And do I really need to walk out of the class? It's too cold outside, Mr. Demetrius." I said, trying to stop myself from shivering as a cool breeze hit my body and his eyes were quick to check my attire.
"You need to wear a coat to college, Miss Green. It's too cold outside for you to try fashion." He said, making me chuckle as I shook my head, crossing my arms behind my back.
"It's not fashion. And don't you think it's quite disrespecting to make assumptions about someone you don't even know, Mr. Demetrius. That's the actual disrespect you were talking about." I said, looking at him with bright eyes.
"Take your seat, Miss Green. And you need to watch your mouth while speaking." He said, making me laugh softly.
"That's practically impossible. But I'll try to supervise my words next time." I said, making him glare at me even more. This man amuses me.
"Sit down, Miss Green."
"On the floor or the chair?" I was the brat people talked about. I am the student teacher used to scold. And now that I am back, I know it's nothing but a problem for teachers.
"I was thinking of the chair, but keep your mischief up and you'll find yourself on the floor soon. I wouldn't care then if it's too cold for you to sit down or not." He said, making me smile gently.
"The desk looks more comfortable to me, Mr. Demetrius. I'll take my seat." I said, walking back to my place. This time I was sitting alone, on the last bench, near the window.
"Maybe you can sit on the front bench, Miss Green. You are new here. I don't want you using that as an excuse to run away from work and grades." Mr. Demetrius said, trying on the board, not even looking at me. I clenched my jaw when the entire class turned to look at me. Glaring at his back, I got up from my seat to sit on the front bench.
"Do you have your textbook yet?" He asked me, and I licked my lips as I stared at him. Which bookstore opens at one in the f*****g morning? He saw me in the bar working yet he is asking me the same question.
"No, Mr...."
"Detention at lunch, Miss Green. Bring your tiffin to my cabin at twelve thirty sharp. Any delay in reporting my cabin would lead to detention after college as well, which I assume you wouldn't appreciate." He said, making me close my eyes as I quietly started scribbling the notes he was writing.
Would the prosecutor release me if I committed another murder in the span of one year?
