Chapter 21
Ruby ran for her life.
Through the streams, over the fallen logs, and around gullies. She fell and slid along dead leaves and dirt all the way down a ravine. That hurt all over, but she lost the wolfkin for the moment.
Up until now, they’d chased her, one on either side of her as she ran. They were powerful creatures and could have caught her whenever they wished. But they didn’t.
Instead, they ran with her. Were they toying with her? Were they training one of their young?
She trudged up a stream, trying to clear her scent trail. After a while, a tiny, fragile flame of hope began to glow inside her. Maybe she’d lost them.
