Chapter 22 Tyler searched the crevice in the rocks for any sign that Shadow might truly have Ruby’s scent. The dog dug into the crevice, excited about something. He backed out of the narrow cave with a snake in his jaws. Shadow shook it, practically tearing it to pieces. Then he dropped the dead snake at Tyler’s feet. Tyler looked at his grinning dog. Shadow looked proud of himself with his tongue lolling out of the side of his mouth. “We’ve lost enough hunters tonight,” said Clemens. His voice was emotionless. He must have realized by now that Mathewson was one of the missing. “Let’s go. The wagon is probably back by now.” Clemens and a couple of other men had followed Tyler into the woods.
