Johnny is a librarian at a local prison. He needed an investor to establish a tax preparation company. While Johnny had experience as a tax preparer, he had no business knowledge. Ray agreed to be his business partner. They could make thousands of dollars. Johnny opens a bank account Fast Cash Tax Firm. The scam was coming together. Christopher was in prison for credit card fraud.
Johnny wanted to build a friendship of trust with Ray. He worked to sit up the business, hire several tax preparers, and a customer service representative. Johnny would just have to teach them how to prepare basic returns. Ray would handle any complex returns.
Tax season January 2 - April 15 would be a busy time for the business. Ray being involved in the business made it easy to build a large clientele. Ray, as a CPA and an honest citizen, would give Johnny an advantage.
Johnny saw Christopher filling out a tax return for an inmate. He worked part of the year. There's nothing wrong with it. Inmate Christopher approached Johnny. Do you want more money than you get paid here? I can help you. They will never catch us.
Johnny saw dollar signals. This would be quick cash, and easy money. He could provide the information for Christopher to complete tax returns. They would directly deposit the refund in the bank account. Johnny's vision was making a lot of money.
Ray worked for years to build an excellent business reputation. In a small town of Cuadrille, an excellent reputation is scarce. People love to gossip. He did bookkeeping for the church. The business owners of the church trusted him. Word spread that Ray's accounting firm was the best in town. His firm was the largest in the county. Ray remembered how difficult it was to start his business. He wanted to do the Christian thing and help Johnny. Ray did not know the evil that lay ahead.
Christopher created a fake Form W 2 using the inmates information. He completed tax forms and manipulate the figures to get the maximum refund. Some would be small token refunds. Most of them would have between a thousand and ten thousand dollars each. Johnny filed them electronically. They would deposit the funds into the bank account. Christopher would receive money in his account monthly. They addressed a rejection notice to Ray's accounting firm. When Ray opened the letter, he wasn't sure what to do.
He filed business tax returns for years without being rejected. Johnny assured him there was nothing to worry about. Johnny convinced him it was merely a typo when introducing the information.
They discussed the rejected tax return. They disposed of the evidence. Johnny needed Ray to complete the complicated returns. Johnny understood what he was doing. Fifty returns were due within five days.
He just needed a little help. If Ray could help him catch up, it would be fine. The business has a lot of customers. It was too late in the season to hire additional staff. The season was almost over. Several tax returns would need to be prepared after the April 15 deadline. Ray didn't know that some returns were being rejected.
The Internal Revenue Service investigated tax returns filed by the Quick Tax Firm. Internal Revenue contacted the General Office of Inspectors and requested help with the investigation. A review of the IRS tax return file determined the incarcerated inmates were at the Cedarville Correctional Center. Johnny created fake W2s. The information gotten at the facility was enough to convict inmate Christopher and Johnny. They contacted the IRS Office to establish the link with the Quick Money Tax Firm.
The Fast Cash tax firm was owned by Johnny and Ray. The Federal Bureau of Investigation, along with the Cedarville Police Department, invaded the Fast Cash Tax Firm and ceased the entire computer. As part of Rays' Certified Accounting Office, they also confiscated his computers. The business was closed pending investigation.
Ray pleaded his innocence to the investigator. When Ray saw the financial records, he becomes overwhelmed. The tax firm made over a million dollars.
Ray continued to plead his innocence to deaf ears. The researchers were just doing their job. Rumors raged through the small town. The tax fraud was the headline in the Evening News.
First Baptist Church held a special meeting. During the meeting, the committee discussed the scandal and how it would affect the church. Ray was a deacon of the church. Their involvement in illegal activities would bring disgrace to the church. Ray handled the church's financial books. The committee voted to remove the excommunicated Ray from the church. Excommunication is really a kind of banishment, a punishment that is dictated by a church when one of its members breaks some important church rule. The committee convened and met with Ray and Jane.
They advised Ray of the church's decision to excommunicate him. Ray begged them to believe he was innocent. The committee would not listen to him. They only thought about the misfortune the church would suffer. Ray quoted Matthew 7:1-2 Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2 For in the same way that you judge others, you will also be judged, and by the measure you use, you will be measured.
Rumors led them to find Ray guilty. The family lost faith in Church. They felt mistreated.
Jane didn't know if she could face her co-workers at school. The church had condemned them, and so would the school. Jane was asking if she would have a job in the morning. The Baptists betrayed him.
There were butterflies and the felling of nausea in the pit of her stomach. Warn saliva filled his mouth. She instructed him to pull over to the side of the road. Jane opened the car door and leaned over and started vomiting. She felt dizzy. Ray hated to see her in this state. He knew it was all her fault. Ray felt helpless. He was innocent. How could this happen to him? A Christian man, he just wanted to help someone less fortunate than himself. Ray had lost faith in humanity. Jane refused to leave the bed.
Ray returned to work. His real friends were there, and they didn't turn their backs on him. They convinced Jane to go to work. When she arrived, everyone felt sorry for her. Jane was a good wife and mother. How could her husband do this? After seeing his family it devastated him. Ray vowed to clear his name and prove he was innocent. Ray hired an attorney to consult.
