The reassuring proposal

477 Words
The proposal unfolded in Hala's living room. It was quite an intense scene for a not so modern young girl. The scene was filled with polite smiles and some definite intentions. Mrs. Sera brought a whole load of flowers and chocolates even some gifts for Hala's family. The scene was quite surprising for a typical family living off their daily lives with not so many luxuries. There was always a fight in Hala's home before any event occurred. And today it was not any better. Hala's parents had already fought about how they were going to present themselves in front of Ayan' family. But that was what any typical family would do before an event right? And of course now it was not a surprise for Sera but still the panic attack got her, because finally it was something related to her. Mrs. Sera, because she was there with some purpose and was supposed to talk to Halas mother , she sat across from Hala's mother, the air was thick with the weight of tradition and expectation. The usual chit chats were done and information was exchanged between the two families, where they lived, what they did, the rules or the virtues of their respective families. Hala's mother, she was a woman of simple pleasures as she was never able to get any luxuries for herself, she listened to Mrs, Sera with a growing sense of contentment. Mrs. Sera's proposal was indeed a good one. "We are a respectable family, with a good name," Mrs. Sera said, her voice smooth as silk. "Ayan is a good boy, educated, and he will take care of Hala." As she was reassuring the lost mother Hala was sitting beside her being in a continuous confused state. She knew that Ayan was not a good choice but Mrs, Sera words were way more convincing to Hala's mother than any of the concerns that were going through Hala's mind at that time. Hala's mother beamed, but still a shadow of confusion crossed her face. "It's just… Hala is our only daughter. It's difficult to let her go right now and also to a stranger." Mrs. Sera leaned forward, her eyes filled with warmth. "I understand your concerns, but please, trust me. My family will love Hala as their own. And obviously Ayan adores her." With a sigh and a heavy heart for her daughters better life style, Hala's mother finally agreed, her heart swelling with a mixture of joy and sorrow. The decision was finally made. It wasn't a rash decision rather Hala's family discussed about this proposal with their immediate family members. This often occurs in asian households, you are not supposed to marry off your daughter without taking permission from the elders. The relatives who don't give a second thought to these things but still traditions are traditions.
