Chapter 9 Jill placed three of his folded T-shirts, fresh from the laundry, onto the bed for him to shove into a duffle bag. She was quiet, and he wasn’t sure what to make of it. “I won’t be gone too long,” he said, “but remember, when you hear from the doctor, call me. I’ll have my cell phone with me. Call me if you need anything.” He didn’t know why he felt so guilty. She lifted her gaze, and for a moment, he thought she smiled. “Yes, Samuel, I’ll call you when I hear from the doctor. I already told you I would. I’ll be fine. Just go and be with your brothers. You have any trouble taking time off?” She seemed far calmer than she had in a long time. Maybe she had rested today.
