Chapter 18 Someone touched her shoulder, and she opened her eyes to see Samuel there, leaning down so close, looking at her in a way she’d never believed he could again. “Hey, how’re you feeling?” he said. “The doctor’s coming in a second to do an ultrasound.” His voice was soft, caring. Had he ever talked to her that way? He reached over and tucked a few strands of her hair behind her ears, not looking away. For a moment, she wondered if she was dreaming. “I’m just tired, but my head doesn’t hurt anymore,” she said. She was lying on her side. “I’m thirsty. Is there water?” Samuel reached for a cup beside a plastic jug and poured water into it, then stuck a straw in it. “Here.” He held it out for her.
