Complicated Relationship

ALEX POV

School was going well except that there was a strange tension in the air this past week. I hadn’t seen Xander much these days (it seems he was planning something for Josie) so I didn’t have the chance to ask. My relationship with the groups was very good although I don’t see Chad much. Since the last project meeting, Jarvis and I got along well and he kept looking at me with puppy dog eyes when he thought I wasn’t paying attention. Tomorrow, the project meeting was at my place after school and we will be having it at Xander’s place because the probability of him getting shot at my house was very high.

During the short break, I went to my usual spot in the piano room and as always I met Diana there. She was playing a piece I was unfamiliar with. I waited for her to finish and she then noticed me and came and hugged me excitedly.

“I missed you!!” she said while hugging me.

I looked at her with my eyebrows raised and said while ending the hug, “We saw each other yesterday and you are making it sound like we have a secret affair”. She started laughing.

“Isn’t our relationship secret though? We only see each other in this room”, she asked jokingly.

“That’s because I never see you outside of this room except in two classes where after the lectures you leave faster than a speeding train as if you were avoiding me. In the cafeteria, there is no sight of you. Also, there has been a strange tension lately, and judging by what I have heard about the relationship between the two groups and your group, I am almost sure you are involved.”, I told her seriously. She noticed my seriousness and looked at me as if contemplating whether she should tell me.

As I was about to follow up she replied, “You sound like a jealous girlfriend.”

She said it so seriously that I was stunned for a second and we both started laughing at the same time.

“I haven’t heard that piece you were playing earlier before.”, I asked as I gave her a gum.

“It’s something I have been working on. It….”, she was interrupted by the bell.

I sighed and got up. We were going out together before she said, “Go on, I have to lock up the room. I will tell you about the piece later”. I waved her goodbye and walked to my next class without knowing that shortly after I had gone she had an encounter with Jarvis.

DIANA POV

I was locking up the doors to the piano room when I heard one of the most annoying people I know behind me. He greeted me sarcastically and I finished locking up the doors slowly while lamenting the chances of meeting him. I turned and saw Jarvis’s irritating face with a smirk on it. My mind was moving rapidly trying to find excuses to get rid of him fast.

“Fancy meeting you here, Dianaaa”, he said and resisted the urge to punch him as he said my name disgustingly.

“Fancy.”, I replied with a frown on my face. He was about to continue talking when I interrupted. I wasn’t in the mood for this rubbish today.

“I am not in a great mood today and especially not in the mood for your insulting statements. For the past year, I have allowed you to ruin my reputation, destroy my relationship with my friends, and make me a loner. But not today or ever, it just occurred to me I don’t owe you anything. I did something wrong by humiliating you in that manner and I hurt you but I have paid enough. My high school experience is supposed to be special and I am not spending my last year comforting your feelings. I am done!”, I screamed all this at him and then opened the gum that Alex gave me and chewed it to calm down.

He looked shocked but before he could speak we heard some clapping and we both turned and I saw my handsome boyfriend coming towards me. I smiled and he came forward and hugged me while massaging my spine a little as he knew that calmed me down.

“I have been waiting for this day for a long time even after going through your childish harassments and your attempts at bullying. You heard the fine lady, she is done with you so please leave.”, Harry said in his awesome accent. My happiness grew stronger in ways I haven’t felt in a long time.

Jarvis boiled in anger and finally said, “I would have believed you if you hadn’t gone and cheated on me.”

I scoffed in disbelief at his foolishness, “Grow up, Jarvis. The cheating is all your assumption and you know the truth somewhere in your thick skull. I am only sorry for the way I humiliated you at the banquet that day and that is all. I have paid my debt and I am free. So please stop bothering me.”

I took Harry’s hand and walked out of there to the gardens. I took a deep breath of fresh air and sat down on a bench.

“How do you feel?”, Harry asked as we were on the bench.

I looked at the sun and said, “Liberated and free. I wasted almost a year of my life trying to pay for mistakes I didn’t commit alone. I made a friend who should have heard all the nasty rumors about me and that just gave me the courage to break out of those chains.”

Harry looked at me happily and asked, “What do you want to do?”

“Well, we haven’t had a meal in the cafeteria in so long. I miss its mac and cheese.”, he laughed and nodded ok. He hugged me and I felt in peace at that very moment.

ALEX POV

I chatted with Xander and Paul on our way to the cafeteria and as we were about to get food we noticed a strange silence and everyone looking at a particular area. We followed their sight and we saw a scene that looked as if it was a movie. Silence in the hall, everyone focused on a group of people as they swaggered into the hall wearing black jackets and nice surprise Diana was part of them. She noticed me and her group started walking towards us.

One person in their group faced the crowd and said, “What are you looking at?”. As if rehearsed, most looked away and the cafeteria became noisy again with all the whispering but their attention was still on the group.

Diana gave me a short hug and I am pretty sure I heard some gasps. I introduced her to my brother and Xander and as were getting our food she introduced me to her boyfriend Harry and her other friends.

We then sat on a table and then I asked, “What changed? I thought the cafeteria was forbidden grounds.”

“It isn’t like that. It is complicated.”, she said as she ate.

“Shorten the story. We have about 30 minutes and our ears are wide open.”, she looked and her boyfriend and he gave her a nod of encouragement. For about 20 minutes, she described what can only be an interesting situation.

Long story short, most people in the groups knew each other in their middle school days and their parents gained friendships and connections with each other. Birthday parties served as banquets between the parents. Jarvis and Diana started dating about 3 years ago and their relationship was going well. But in the late periods of their 2nd year, Diana started getting unhappy as she started noticing things in their relationship the more she grew older. He was the deciding figure in their relationship but her opinions didn’t matter. He will make a decision and assume it was hers also.

She was young and didn’t know how to talk about it. She met Harry and they became only friends. She continued to get unhappy in the relationship and the breaking point was her 18th birthday party last year. He came one day and said he would plan her birthday party. She didn’t think much of it as it was basically everyone’s parent interaction party. The only things she did was to get a dress and practice her speech in front of a mirror.

Everything continued normally and then on the morning of her birthday, he brought her a gown and gave her to wear without her opinion. She felt extremely uncomfortable as the party neared and she tried to let it go. The party started and as her chaperone, he walked her down the stairs and she was starting to feel a little happy.

Then it happened, as she was about to start her birthday speech she was interrupted by him and he said a speech. People looked as if they were enjoying the speech but she wasn’t. Anger took over her entire being and before he ended the speech, she walked away and wanted to leave to get some fresh air. He finished his speech quickly and caught up with her before she left the hall. They started to attract everyone’s attention.

“Why did you walk out like that? Do you want to embarrass me?”, he said as he caught up with her. All the anger burst out and she slapped him. She let it rip there and then. She broke up with him and shouted at him in public in front of friends and family.

Xander, Paul, and I looked at each other and the information that passed through us was that it was a bit complicated.

“Why did you come out as a cheating w***e in all this?”, I asked her as I drank my juice.

“Language, Alex.”, Paul said to me.

I put up my hand signaling no offence.

She chuckled and said, “No offense taken. I don’t know if he took PR advice from his dad but the story turned out like that. I wasn’t even involved with Harry then. After all this, Harry and I just clicked and we started dating officially 6 months ago.”. Harry smiled and pecked her hand.

I admired their affection a little bit. Xander cleared his throat and apologized, “I heard the news and judged you wrongly. I apologize for my behavior”. She accepted the apology and continued, “I felt very guilty for the way I humiliated him that night, and even when he and his friends teamed up to beat Harry, I endured all their behavior but I am tired. I deserve happiness.”

“Cheers to that.”, I said and we all drank our drinks to that. I saw Diana looking in a direction and I turned and saw Jarvis glaring at our table.
