(Combines: Crusade of Vengeance, The Starlight Gala, Saturday Wedding, and A Single Bed) Julian closed the distance between them with terrifying speed, his shadow completely eclipsing her. He slammed his hand onto the desk right next to the journal, trapping her against the wood. "You shouldn't have seen that," he whispered, his voice dangerously low. "Give me one reason I shouldn't tear up our contract and ruin you right now." "Because you need me to get your inheritance," Elena gasped, refusing to back down despite her racing heart. "You can't destroy the company if the board strips you of your power first." Julian stared at her, his jaw clenching. Slowly, the fury in his eyes gave way to an exhausting, hollow sadness. He stepped back, running a hand through his dark hair. "Ten years ago, my grandfather forced my mother out of this company, driving her to bankruptcy and despair," Julian said, his voice cracking with a rare, raw emotion. "He built Vance Enterprises on the backs of ruined families. I don't want his empire, Elena. I want justice. I'm going to liquidate every asset and return the money to the people he destroyed." Elena stared at him, the image of the ruthless billionaire shattering to reveal a broken son seeking vengeance. Julian stepped closer, his gaze burning into hers. "You are going to swear an oath of silence. If you breathe a single word of this to anyone—the press, the board, his lawyers—I will ensure you never work in this city again. Do we understand each other?" "I swear," she said softly. "Your secret is safe with me." Julian nodded slowly, a sudden, intense tension sparking between them in the quiet room. "Good. Now get dressed. The Starlight Gala starts in two hours, and we have a love story to sell." The ballroom of the Starlight Gala was a sea of flashing cameras and glittering diamonds. Elena stood at Julian’s side, her hand resting over his tailored sleeve. She wore a stunning emerald silk dress he had bought for her, but she felt entirely exposed under the scrutiny of the city's elite. "Smile, Elena," Julian murmured smoothly, barely moving his lips as they posed for a wall of paparazzi. "You look beautiful, but you look like you're heading to an execution." "I feel like I am," she whispered back, flashing a radiant, fake smile for the cameras. As they stepped into the main hall, a sharp voice cut through the music. "Julian? You can not be serious." An older man with silver hair and a cruel, calculating gaze approached them. It was Charles Vance, Julian’s uncle, and the head of the company's board. Beside him stood a beautiful, smug woman in a diamond-encrusted gown—Julian’s wealthy ex-fiancée, Victoria. Charles sneered, openly evaluating Elena’s minimalist jewelry. "Is this a joke, Julian? We heard rumors that you were bringing a fiancée, but we expected someone of status. Not your common secretary. The board will never believe this farce." Victoria laughed softly behind her champagne glass. "Really, Julian. Did you pick her up from the typing pool just to spite your grandfather's will? She doesn't belong in a room like this. She looks utterly cheap." Elena felt a hot flush of humiliation creep up her neck. She opened her mouth to defend herself, but before she could speak, Julian stepped completely in front of her. His massive frame shielded her from their glares. "Watch your mouth, Victoria," Julian growled, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy register that silenced the immediate circle around them. He looked directly at his uncle, his gray eyes flashing with a terrifying authority. "Elena is my fiancée. She has more intelligence, loyalty, and grace in her little finger than anyone in your entire social circle. If you insult her again, Charles, I will personally review your division's budget by tomorrow morning and strip you of your seat." Charles turned pale, stepping back. Victoria’s jaw dropped in absolute shock. Julian didn't wait for a reply. He forcefully wrapped his arm around Elena's waist, pulling her flush against his side. "We are leaving. We've stayed long enough to give the press what they want." As he guided her toward the exit, his hand remained firmly, protectively pressed against her back. Elena looked up at his sharp profile, her chest tight. For a brief second, his anger hadn't looked like a business calculation at all. It looked entirely real. The next morning, the fragile peace shattered. Elena woke up in the penthouse to her phone buzzing continuously with news alerts. Charles had struck back, leaking a devastating, fabricated story to the tabloids: “From Typing Pool to Penthouse: Is Julian Vance’s New Fiancée an International Corporate Spy?” The article twisted her desperate need for the job into a calculated scheme, completely threatening the validity of their upcoming marriage contract before it could even begin. When she rushed into the living room, Julian was already standing by the window, staring out at the city with an expression of pure, unadulterated fury. "My uncle just declared war," he said, turning to look at her. "We don't defend ourselves in the press, Elena. We force their hand. We are getting married this Saturday." Elena froze. "This Saturday? Julian, the article says I'm a spy! A rushed wedding will just look like damage control." "Not if we spin it as an act of reckless, unstoppable passion," Julian said, walking toward her with absolute purpose. "My uncle wants the board to doubt you, so they contest the inheritance. If we marry immediately, the legal transition of power triggers instantly. By Monday morning, I will hold the voting majority, and Charles will be completely powerless to stop us." He stopped inches away, looking down at her panicked expression. "I know it’s fast. But it’s the only way to protect the deal, clean your name, and secure your five million dollars. Are you in?" Elena looked at him, realizing the stakes had just turned deadly serious. She took a sharp breath and nodded. "Fine. Let's give them a wedding they'll never forget." The heavy oak doors of the chapel vestry slammed shut, cutting off the swelling sound of the wedding organ. Elena stood in her floor-to-ceiling white silk gown, her veil pushed back, staring in shock at Mr. Sterling—the senior executor of the Vance estate. Julian stood beside her, his tailored tuxedo fitting perfectly, though his face had turned to absolute stone. "What do you mean, invalid?" Julian’s voice dropped to a lethal register. "The license is signed. The priest is waiting. The board is sitting in the front pews." Mr. Sterling sighed, adjusting his spectacles as he pointed to a faded codicil attached to the original will. "Your grandfather was a deeply suspicious man, Julian. He anticipated you might attempt a marriage of convenience to bypass his wishes." Elena stepped forward, her heart hammering against her ribs. "What is the clause, Mr. Sterling?" "The marriage must be deemed consummated and collaborative under continuous cohabitation," Sterling read aloud. "Furthermore, the executor's office reserves the right to conduct unannounced house audits over the next twelve months. If there is any evidence that you maintain separate bedrooms, separate finances, or live as platonic business partners, the contract is breached. The empire will instantly default to your uncle Charles." Elena felt the color drain from her face. She looked up at Julian, realizing the horrifying implication. Their neat, tidy business merger with its strict "no touching" rules was completely dead. To save the deal, protect her name, and secure her five million dollars, they would have to live a total lie—sharing a bed, a room, and a life under the constant threat of a surprise raid. Julian looked down at Elena, his gray eyes flashing with a mix of calculated fury and an intense, unreadable dark emotion. He wrapped his hand firmly around hers, his grip tight and possessive. "Change of plans, Elena," Julian whispered, his breath warm against her ear. "It seems we aren't just faking an engagement anymore. We are sharing a bed." He turned back to the doors, throwing them open to reveal the crowded chapel. "Let's go get married." The double doors of Julian’s penthouse locked shut behind them later that evening, leaving them in a suffocating silence. Elena was officially Mrs. Julian Vance, but the victory felt completely hollow. Julian unbuttoned his collar and walked straight to the master suite. Elena followed him, halting at the threshold of a massive, black-and-silver bedroom dominated by a single, king-sized bed. "Where am I supposed to sleep?" Elena asked, crossing her arms defensively. "In this bed," Julian replied smoothly, tossing his cufflinks onto the nightstand. "We’ve already discussed this. The executor’s office can audit this penthouse at any moment. If they find pillows on the living room sofa or sheets in the guest room, my uncle wins. We sleep here. Together." Elena stared at the single mattress. "Our contract explicitly stated no physical expectations." "And I don't intend to break it," Julian snapped, his icy gray eyes narrowing with frustration. "I am exhausted, Elena. I have an empire to liquidate and an uncle to destroy. Put a pillow barrier down the middle if it makes you feel safe, but get in the bed. We have to look married." Elena swallowed hard, her heart pounding as she slowly walked over to her side of the mattress. She crawled beneath the heavy silk sheets, pulling them up to her chin, hyper-aware of the mattress shifting as Julian lay down beside her. The heat radiating from his body filled the narrow space between them, creating an overwhelming, magnetic friction that made sleep feel completely impossible.
