Chapter 3: The Midnight Raid
The digital clock on the nightstand glowed 3:14 AM. Elena stared blankly at the ceiling, every nerve ending screamingly alert. Just ten inches away, past their makeshift barrier of plush down pillows, Julian slept. His breathing was deep, even, and frustratingly calm.
She turned her head slightly, watching the sharp silhouette of his profile in the dark. The ruthless tyrant who had spent weeks terrorizing her with impossible corporate demands looked strangely vulnerable in sleep. But the memory of his raw confession in his hidden study—that he was actively destroying his own grandfather’s empire to avenge his mother—haunted her. She wasn't just a fake wife anymore. She was an accessory to a corporate execution.
Suddenly, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the front hallway.
Elena froze. The penthouse was heavily fortified with biometric security. Nobody could just open the front door.
A muffled male voice drifted down the corridor, followed by the sound of heavy footsteps on the hardwood floor.
Julian was awake instantly. In one fluid, silent motion, he threw off his side of the covers. His hand clamped firmly over Elena’s mouth before she could let out a gasp. His gray eyes burned through the shadows, wide and sharp.
"They're here," Julian breathed into her ear, his deep voice barely a vibration against her skin. "The house auditors. My uncle must have tipped them off that we'd sleep apart on night one."
Elena nodded frantically against his palm. He released her, but instead of getting up to confront the intruders, Julian grabbed the pillow barrier and aggressively flung it across the room. He grabbed Elena by the waist, violently pulling her body across the mattress until she was flush against his bare chest.
"Julian!" she hissed under her breath, panic flaring as her hands smacked against his warm, solid shoulders.
"Tuck your head into my neck," he commanded, his arms wrapping tightly around her waist, locking her legs with his own. He pulled the heavy silk duvet up over their shoulders, burying them in a tangled, intimate embrace. "Act like you've been sleeping like this for years. If they see an inch of distance, we lose everything."
Before Elena could process the suffocating heat of his body or the scent of cedar wrapping around her, the master bedroom door swung open.
The overhead lights flooded on, blinding them.
"Vance Estate Executors Office," Mr. Sterling’s voice boomed, completely devoid of apology. He stood in the doorway, flanked by two stone-faced security guards holding digital tablets. "Unannounced compliance audit under Section 9 of the Vance lineage decree."
Julian didn't move his arms from Elena's waist. He merely shifted his head, squinting into the light with a perfectly manufactured expression of lethal, groggy fury.
"Are you completely out of your mind, Sterling?" Julian growled, his voice a dangerous, gravelly rasp. "Breaking into my home in the middle of the night? I'll have your license revoked by morning."
Mr. Sterling stepped closer to the foot of the bed, his analytical gaze scanning the room. He noted the discarded clothes on the floor, the single set of messed-up sheets, and the way Elena was curled entirely into Julian's chest, her fingers instinctively clutching his shoulders for cover.
"My apologies, Mr. Vance, but we received a credible tip-off that this marriage was a platonic arrangement to defraud the estate," Sterling said smoothly, tapping his tablet. "We are required to document the cohabitation status visually. You may remain covered."
Elena hid her face deeper into Julian’s neck, her heart hammering so violently she was certain Julian could feel it through his ribs. To her shock, Julian’s grip tightened protectively. He rubbed a soothing hand up and down her bare back, a gesture so naturally tender it sent a confusing shiver straight down her spine.
"You've documented it," Julian hissed, his eyes narrowing at the executor. "Now take your cameras, take your guards, and get the hell out of my penthouse before I show you exactly how ruthless I can be outside of a boardroom."
Mr. Sterling stared at them for three agonizing seconds, searching for any sign of hesitation or deceit. Finding none, he gave a curt bow. "Compliance verified for Month One. Goodnight, Mr. and Mrs. Vance."
The lights clicked off, and the heavy doors finally closed. The distant sound of the front penthouse door locking shut signaled they were alone again.
The room plunged back into darkness, but neither of them moved. Elena remained pinned beneath Julian’s heavy frame, her breathing ragged, her heart racing from the adrenaline—and from the terrifying realization that Julian hadn't let go of her yet.
