Chapter 4: The Glass Cage
The morning sun cut through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the master suite, but the warmth did nothing to calm Elena’s nerves. Julian had already left for a 7:00 AM board meeting, leaving her alone in the massive bed.
She sat up, wrapping the silk duvet around herself as she stared at the empty space beside her. The lingering scent of cedar and expensive cologne reminded her of how closely they had been forced to hold each other just hours before.
Elena shook her head, trying to clear her thoughts. "It’s just business," she muttered aloud, forcing herself out of bed.
She walked over to the vanity table to brush her hair. As she reached for her jewelry box, a tiny, unnatural glint of red light beneath the decorative crown molding caught her eye.
Elena stopped, her hand freezing in mid-air. She stepped closer, standing on her tiptoes to inspect the dark wood trim. Hidden perfectly inside a tiny groove in the molding was a pinhole camera lens.
Her stomach violently dropped.
Sterling’s team hadn't just conducted an audit; they had wired the room.
Panic surged through her. She immediately grabbed her phone to call Julian, but stopped herself just as her thumb hovered over his name. If they were watching the video feed, they were listening to the audio, too. A frantic phone call would expose everything.
Thinking fast, Elena grabbed a legal notepad from her briefcase. She scribbled a message in large, bold letters: THE AUDITORS LEFT A HIDDEN CAMERA IN THE BEDROOM MOLDING. WE ARE BEING WATCHED RIGHT NOW.
An hour later, the penthouse front door clicked open. Julian walked in, his expression tense as he loosened his tie. "Elena, I forgot the Q3 forecast papers on the kitchen counter. Did you—"
Elena met him in the hallway, silently pressing the notepad against his chest.
Julian’s eyes scanned her handwritten words. The cold, calculating mask of the ruthless billionaire dropped instantly, replaced by a dark, dangerous stillness. He looked up, his gray eyes locking onto hers with absolute understanding.
He didn't skip a beat.
Julian tossed his briefcase onto the table and stepped directly into her personal space. He wrapped his arms tightly around her waist, pulling her flush against his body.
"I missed you this morning," Julian said aloud, his voice smooth, dripping with a perfectly manufactured, passionate warmth. He leaned down, burying his face in the crook of her neck, while his eyes frantically scanned the ceiling molding above her head.
Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs as she played along, wrapping her arms around his shoulders. "You left so early," she murmured into his chest, her voice trembling slightly.
Julian located the pinhole lens. He angled his body, blocking the camera's line of sight with his broad shoulders. While continuing to murmur sweet, fake endearments aloud, he took the pen from Elena's hand and quickly scrawled a reply on the notepad against her back: PLAY ALONG. WE GIVE THEM A SHOW UNTIL MY SECURITY TEAM SCRUB THE FEED.
He pulled back slightly, staring down at her lips with an intensity that made the fake romance feel terrifyingly real. "Let's go back to bed, sweetheart," Julian whispered aloud, his thumb gently tracing her cheekbone. "The office can wait."
Julian’s hand moved down to clasp hers, his fingers weaving firmly through Elena's. He led her back into the bedroom, completely aware that every movement was being streamed directly to his enemies.
"Julian, stop," Elena said aloud, injecting a sharp, icy edge into her voice as she pulled her hand away. She pointed subtly toward the hidden lens, signaling him to begin the act. "We need to talk about your uncle Charles. I saw how he looked at me at the gala. If he finds out the truth—"
"The truth about what, Elena?" Julian interrupted, his voice dropping to a dangerously smooth, defensive baritone. He stepped into the camera’s view, his expression darkening with a perfectly fabricated storm of marital tension. "That you married me for my money? The whole city already thinks that thanks to his leaks."
"You know that's not why I'm here!" Elena fired back, stepping right up to his chest, her eyes wide with real adrenaline. "You promised me this would be a real partnership. But you're still keeping secrets. I found your mother's old legal journals, Julian. I know what you're actually planning to do to Vance Enterprises!"
Julian's eyes flared with a brief, genuine shock at how well she was using their real secrets to make the fake argument convincing. He grabbed her upper arms, pulling her close enough that their breath mingled.
"Lower your voice," Julian growled aloud, his face twisting into a mask of furious, protective authority. "My mother has nothing to do with us. I told you to stay out of the east wing. If you ever bring up her name again, or question my loyalty to this family's legacy, our marriage is over."
"Fine!" Elena yelled, pushing against his chest. "If you won't trust your own wife, then sleep on the couch tonight!"
"I am the master of this house, Elena," Julian countered, his voice dropping to a low, possessive growl that sent a genuine shiver straight down her spine. He pinned her against the edge of the mattress, his gray eyes burning into hers. "You share my bed. You wear my ring. You don't get to lock me out because you're throwing a tantrum over my family's business."
He abruptly leaned in, his lips stopping a mere millimeter from hers, creating a suffocating, magnetic tension that looked like pure, raw passion on a camera feed. He held the pose for three agonizing seconds, letting the viewer see the volatile mix of anger and desire between them, before pulling back with a harsh exhale.
"I'm going to the office," Julian snapped, turning on his heel and storming out of the room, slamming the master suite doors behind him.
Elena sank onto the edge of the bed, her hands shaking as her heart hammered against her ribs. The argument was a complete fabrication for the camera, but the terrifyingly real intensity in Julian's eyes left her wondering where the acting ended and the reality began.
