Chapter 1: Betrayed
The office was silent, save for the ticking of an antique clock on the wall. It was the kind of silence that wasn’t peaceful. It was heavy, oppressive, like an invisible weight pressing down on Emma’s chest. She stood there, frozen, her trembling hands clutching the papers Victor had shoved in front of her. Her father’s oak desk—the desk where he had once made decisions that shaped lives and legacies—now felt like a battlefield. And sitting across her, his sharp blue eyes glinting with malice, was the man she had once vowed to love, honor, and cherish. Victor leaned back in the leather chair, his posture relaxed, almost smug, like a predator toying with its prey. His tailored suit hugged his broad frame, his polished shoes resting casually against the edge of her father’s desk as if he owned the place. And now, he practically did. Emma’s name on those papers would seal the deal, handing over her father’s company—the company he had poured his entire life into—to the man she had trusted most. Trusted. Past tense. That word would haunt her for the rest of her life. “Sign the damn papers, Emma,” Victor said, his voice low and venomous. “Let’s not drag this out any longer than it needs to be.” Emma’s heart was pounding so loudly she could barely hear him. Her chest felt tight, her breaths shallow, as if the walls were closing in. This couldn’t be real. It had to be a nightmare, some twisted figment of her imagination. Any second now, she would wake up in her bed, Victor’s arm draped around her waist, and he would smile at her like he always did—like he used to. But as her vision blurred with tears and the cold metal of the pen pressed against her palm, the horrifying truth settled in. This was real. He had betrayed her. “Why?” Her voice cracked, barely above a whisper. She forced herself to look up at him, to meet the eyes that had once gazed at her with tenderness but now held only contempt. “Why are you doing this to me? To my family?” Victor’s lips curled into a mockery of a smile, one that didn’t reach his eyes. “Why?” he repeated, as if the question amused him. “Because I can, Emma. Because you made it so easy. You handed me everything on a silver platter—your trust, your heart, your father’s company. Did you think I married you for love?” The words hit her like a physical blow, each one carving into her heart like a jagged knife. She staggered back a step, her knees threatening to buckle. “You… you used me?” she choked out, her voice trembling with disbelief. Victor let out a low laugh, cold and unfeeling. “Of course I did. What did you think this was, some fairy tale? Grow up, Emma. The world doesn’t work like that. Your father’s company was the prize, and you… you were just the means to an end.” Emma’s grip on the papers tightened, her knuckles turning white. Her mind raced, trying to piece together the moments—the signs she had missed, the lies she had believed. It had all been a game to him. Every kiss, every touch, every whispered promise of forever—it had all been a lie. A sharp click of heels drew Emma’s attention to the doorway, and her stomach dropped as Bianca stepped into the room. Her best friend. Her confidante. The woman she had trusted with her deepest secrets. The woman now wore a smirk that matched Victor’s, her dark red lips curling in satisfaction. “Oh, Emma,” Bianca said, her tone dripping with mock pity. “You look surprised. Did you think you could hold onto all of this?” She gestured around the office, her manicured hand sweeping over the desk, the walls, and the very air that had once belonged to Emma’s father. “You were never cut out for this world. Victor and I? We’re the ones who know how to play the game.” Emma’s hands shook as she stared at the two of them, the people she had loved and trusted more than anyone else in the world. They had planned this together. They had laughed behind her back, whispered in the dark, and plotted her downfall while she had been too blind to see it. “You…” Emma’s voice broke as she looked at Bianca, her heart shattering anew. “You were my best friend. How could you do this to me?” Bianca shrugged, her perfectly styled hair catching the light. “Don’t take it personally, darling. It’s just business. Besides, you were always so… naive. It was almost too easy.” Emma felt the tears welling in her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. Not in front of them. Not now. She wouldn’t give them the satisfaction. But her resolve wavered as Victor stood and leaned across the desk, his face inches from hers. “Sign the papers, Emma,” he said, his voice low and menacing. “Do it now, or I’ll make sure you regret it.” Her gaze flickered to the hulking man standing in the corner of the room, her late father’s trusted bodyguard. At some point, Victor had turned him into his pawn, just like everything else in Emma’s life. The cold glint of the gun in his hand made her blood run cold. There was no escape. She was trapped. Her hand shook as she picked up the pen, the weight of it unbearable. The tears she had fought so hard to hold back slipped down her cheeks as she scrawled her name across the dotted line. Each letter felt like a betrayal to her father, to herself, to the life she had once dreamed of. Victor snatched the papers from her, his grin wide and triumphant. “Good girl,” he said mockingly, his tone dripping with condescension. Bianca stepped closer, draping herself over Victor’s arm like a trophy. “See? That wasn’t so hard, was it?” Emma couldn’t speak. She couldn’t breathe. The walls of the office felt like they were closing in, suffocating her. She turned on trembling legs and walked to the door, her vision blurred with tears. But as she reached the threshold, she stopped and turned back to face them. Victor was laughing, his head thrown back as he celebrated his victory. Bianca was by his side, her red lips curled in a smug smile. They thought they had won. They thought they had broken her. But they were wrong. Emma’s hands clenched into fists at her sides, her nails digging into her palms. Her voice was low, trembling with a fury she hadn’t known she possessed. “You’ll regret this,” she said, her words barely more than a whisper but carrying the weight of a promise. “Both of you. I swear it.” And with that, she walked out of the office, leaving behind the shattered pieces of her old life. But deep in her heart, a fire had been lit—a fire that would burn brighter and hotter with every step she took. This wasn’t the end. It was only the beginning.
