Emily never cheated.

But the night everything fell apart, it didn’t matter what the truth was.

All he saw was a message on her phone—one that looked like betrayal. No explanation. No questions. Just anger, distance… and the quiet collapse of everything they had.

To Emily, it wasn’t just the accusation that hurt.

It was what it meant.

He didn’t trust her.

And if there was no trust, what were they even holding onto?

What should have been a simple misunderstanding turns into something bigger—words said in anger, pride that won’t bend, and a silence that stretches longer than either of them expected.

They walk away.

From each other. From the life they were building. From everything that once felt certain.

Years later, when life brings them back together as young adults, the truth finally surfaces—but so do the feelings they never really left behind.

Because some love doesn’t end.

It just waits… for the truth to catch up.

We Were Fine Until We Weren’t is an emotional story about trust, timing, and second chances—about how one moment can break everything, and how sometimes, it takes years to put it back together again.

CHAPTER 1. Teenage Beginnings
Emily shoved her backpack onto the chair with a thump and wiped her hands on her jeans. The cafeteria was buzzing with noise—the usual chaos of trays clanging, kids laughing too loud, and the faint smell of fries mixed with disinfectant. She spotted him across the room—tall, messy-haired, with that crooked smile she couldn’t stop noticing. He waved. Emily waved back, her stomach flipping like she’d just jumped off a diving board. High school was predictable in some ways, but moments like this made it feel like walking on a tightrope. “Hey, Emily,” he called, sliding into the seat across from her. “Hey,” she said, trying to sound chill, even though her chest was doing some sort of weird gymnastic routine. “So,” he started, glancing at the tray she hadn’t touched yet, “did you actually finish the history project, or are you still screwing around?” Emily laughed. “Maybe a little screwing around. Don’t tell anyone, okay?” “Your secret’s safe with me,” he said, grinning. “As long as you don’t tell anyone I’ve been totally failing algebra. s**t’s brutal.” They laughed together, and for a moment, it was like the cafeteria, the noise, even the fluorescent lights didn’t exist. Just them, talking like nothing else mattered. After a few bites of her fries, Emily leaned back and studied him. He had this way of tilting his head when he was thinking, like the world was trying to puzzle itself out around him. She liked that about him. Liked everything about him, more than she’d admit out loud. “So, you actually doing the science lab this weekend?” she asked, trying to sound casual. He groaned. “Ugh, don’t remind me. I swear if I have to measure one more milliliter of goddamn acid, my brain’s gonna explode.” Emily snorted. “Sounds intense. Want me to help?” “Nah,” he said, grinning. “You’d probably just laugh at me the whole time, and honestly, that might be worse.” Emily laughed anyway. “Fair. But just so you know, my laughing is highly motivational.” They teased each other back and forth, the kind of banter that felt effortless and familiar. Neither of them noticed the seconds stretching into minutes, the way other kids occasionally glanced at them like they were some kind of unspoken duo. It was like they had their own little bubble, where only their words mattered. Her phone buzzed in her pocket, breaking the bubble. A message from her best friend popped up, asking if she wanted to hang out later. She glanced at him, unsure whether to mention it. He caught the hesitation, and a flicker of worry crossed his face—something she didn’t understand yet. Something that, years later, would feel like the first subtle shift in their dynamic, even if at the time it was meaningless. “Busy?” he asked. “Not… just hanging with friends,” she said, forcing a casual tone. He nodded, but his eyes lingered a second too long, and Emily felt that strange mix of guilt and amusement that always came with their friendship. After lunch, they walked together to their next class, weaving through the crowded halls. Lockers slammed, shoes squeaked, and teachers yelled across the corridors, but for them it was just a background hum. “So, you’re actually going to that party on Friday?” he asked. Emily shrugged. “Maybe. Depends on if my mom lets me stay out past nine. You know how she is.” “I know,” he said, grinning. “My mom would kill me if I even thought about staying out late. Guess we’re both screwed.” They laughed again, falling into that rhythm where one would finish the other’s sentences, joke at the other’s expense, and still somehow end up smiling at each other like idiots. Emily knew that the world outside school wasn’t always easy, and the halls were sometimes ruthless, but in moments like this, she could forget all of that. By the time the last bell rang, signaling the end of the school day, Emily felt lighter. Walking home, she thought about how lucky she was to have him in her life—even if she didn’t exactly know what “having him” meant yet. Little did she know, these ordinary teenage moments—sharing fries, laughing at homework, walking through crowded halls—were the kind of memories that would stay with her forever. Before college, before heartbreaks, before misunderstandings, it was just them: two teenagers trying to survive high school, trying to understand themselves, and somehow finding each other along the way.
