THE WORLD
The story takes place in Ashtur—the first kingdom ever created in a world that was once divided among independent free cities.
Before Ashtur existed, the world was fragmented. Each city governed itself under its own rulers, customs and traditions. Some were prosperous, others unstable, but all possessed one thing in common: freedom to rule themselves.
That ended with Astaburn.
Driven by military ambition and an overwhelming belief in his own vision, Astaburn began a campaign of conquest unlike anything the world had seen. Cities that resisted were invaded and absorbed. Others surrendered after realizing they could not withstand his armies.
One by one, many free cities disappeared.
In their place emerged Ashtur—the first unified kingdom.
Astaburn did not destroy every local system after conquest. Instead, conquered territories were reorganized and placed beneath royal authority.
Local rulers were replaced or subordinated, and governance became structured beneath appointed regional Lords loyal to the crown.
Each conquered region was divided into four administrative territories governed by:
the Lord of the North, the Lord of the South, the Lord of the East and the Lord of the West.
Though these Lords maintain order and oversee prosperity within their territories, their authority exists only through the king.
To some, Astaburn became the ruler who ended chaos.
To many, and The Resistance, he became the man who ended choice.
Over time, Astaburn's rule evolved into ideology.
He came to believe that his creation of Ashtur proved he stood above ordinary rulers. Eventually, that belief expanded into something greater: that his bloodline itself had become extraordinary.
His only Son, Prince Atlas, became the center of that belief.
Atlas was not raised simply as heir to the throne but as the continuation of Astaburn's ideal world. His future marriage became a matter of national importance.
Astaburn publicly declared that no ordinary woman was worthy to become Atlas's queen.
This began one of the kingdom's most disturbing institutions: Rose Tower.
Known with ridicule by The Resistance as "The Purity Project."
Families from across Ashtur were invited to offer daughters to be evaluated and raised under impossible standards of purity, refinement, discipline, obedience, education, and ritual untouched perfection.
Queenship was promised to whomever succeeded. Failure was not explained.
After the First Appraisal, no child met the king's expectations.
Fathers were slaughtered.
Mothers banished to The Forgotten Ends, never to be heard from again.
The daughters were repurposed and trained into elite attendants and servants to support noble households and royal interests. While the rest of their families were given away as slaves.
Another was chosen.
Chalice.
The only one given as an infant by her mother, Lady Mearith—Lady of Evanaw and secret leader of The Resistance.
By the the time the story begins, Ashtur appears prosperous and stable.
Its armies are feared. Its king is unquestioned. Its court shines with beauty and ceremony.
But beneath the polished surface, tension spreads quietly.
Battles—against The Resistance and against retaliations from the remaining free cities—continue along the edges of Ashtur.
Some still remember the free cities.
Some want the kingdom destroyed.
Others believe the Kingdom should survive—but become something better.
