Chapter 3

The next day, Sofia's alarm clock is ringing, and she stretched out her hand to the bedside table to stop it. Yawning lazily, she struggled to open her eyes and looked at the time. It was just past seven in the morning. In haste, she got out of bed and went straight to the bathroom to freshen up. Afterward, she went downstairs for breakfast. With a bright smile on her face, she quickly walked into the kitchen, only to be surprised when she saw Jasper sitting at the dining table together with her Mom. What is he doing here? No, no! It's impossible. How can he be at my house this very early? But wait--why does he look so handsome when he smiles? Their eyes met just now, and she felt her heart beat faster than usual. Sofia thought that she wasn't attracted to him, but at that moment it was difficult to breathe, and her heart was beating faster. "Good morning, Sofia!" Jasper greeted without removing his eyes from her. "What's good in the morning? What brings you here? Don't you have something to eat at home?" She asked sarcastically, but Jasper just smiled. "Sofia—watch your mouth," her mom said, glaring at her, and then turned to Jasper and smiled apologetically. Sofia saw the naughty smile on Jasper's face, and she didn't like it! "Come on, Sofia, sit down and have breakfast," her Mom said, looking at her. Sofia walked past him and sat on the chair next to her Mom. "Jasper, I'm so excited about this year's summer vacation because you and your Mom are spending it with us." Looking at Jasper, her Mom said while smiling. "Me too, Auntie!" Jasper replied with a sweet smile also, and right there, at that moment, Sofia's heart sank. She couldn't believe this was happening. After all those years, why was he back? "Sofia, are you alright, dear?" Her Mom said as she turned to look at her. "Yeah, I am," Sofia replied but somehow her forehead broke out in a sweat, and she trembled a little. Looking at Jasper, she then realized he looked more handsome and very different from how he was years ago. She tried to be calm and started to put some food on her plate. "Sofia--- you and Jasper haven't seen each other for years, I guess I'll leave you two now--so you two could talk-" Mom said as she stood up and turned her back on us, heading into the living room. With a mischievous smile on his face, Jasper poured a fruit juice in a glass, and he then reached out and handed it to Sofia. At that moment, Sofia felt so strange. "Sofia! Are you okay?" Jasper asked. "Yeah, I'm fine!" she mumbled. Throughout breakfast, Sofia could feel Jasper's stare, but she didn't look back at him and pretended not to know it. Right after having breakfast, she hurriedly went back to her room. "What's wrong with me?" Sofia blurted out as she rested her head against the door. Taking in a deep breath, a sudden knock startled her. She opened the door only to see Jasper's face just a few inches away from her. She froze. "Hey, are you avoiding me?" Jasper asked with his signature smirk. "No, why should I?" In the blink of an eye, Jasper's face lightened. He then closed the door and stood there. Sofia turned her back on him, then sat in bed. Jasper then followed, sat next to her, and pressed his hand against her forehead. His touch made Sofia feel uneasy and her whole body trembled. “Am I disturb ing you?” Seeing that Sofia didn't want to answer his question, Steven stood up and headed through the door. He looked back and said in a low tone, "Okay, I'll just go back tonight when you're ready to talk to me!"
