A recording. A recording.
Those were the words my mind kept chanting. But how…, I mean when… When did he record that? I'm so confused right now, was it while I was focused on Sera or before that?
"It just needs a little editing, removing the unwanted and voila.” Lucas said.
The voice recorder kept playing the words I exchanged with Sera and if he edited them and posted them online, then I'd be doomed. My parents would disown me without a single thought, especially my mother. No, I can't let that happen. Not when I'm this close.
"Lucas, you promised me not to do it.” I heard Sera's voice. Her back was turned towards me, so I can't make out the expression she has on right now, but I wanted to know if she's stopping him for herself or because of what I have at steak.
"And I intended to keep my promise to you, Sera," Lucas said, “but after her threat, I can't just fold my arms and do nothing, not when my reputation is at stake here."
The next thing I knew, Sera turned towards me and her eyes looked at mine without blinking then it shifted to my phone.
“You can't be serious—," but her eyes didn't waver even for a second. “That's not happening, I'm sorry but I can't do it. If you are asking me to delete it because of what people will say when he posts our voice recording online, then no I'm not deleting it." I couldn't even look her straight in the eye anymore.
"You're so selfish, do you know that?”
I stood completely frozen by her words and tone. "What… what did you just say?"
“You're so f*****g selfish!!!" She screamed. “You always think about what you want. What will happen to you? But have you ever thought about what has been happening to me, huh?” She said, pointing her finger at her chest. "Did you even stop for a moment to ask me, how I ended up in this situation, or what brought me here in the first place, Satella!! My mom was dying.”
My heart dropped, I took a step back from shock of what I just heard. "Aunty… dying, but how come…, when? I… I didn't know. Why didn't you tell me?"
“Why didn't I tell you?" She repeated, like the question was absurd. “When did you give me the f*****g chance to. Anytime we had the chance to see each other all you talked about was how you wanted your company back, how you want to escape this engagement, school this and that. Did you even for once stop to really look at me, to see how tired I was. I have problems too!! She stopped breathing hard. "My family depends on me for everything and you know that, and…and there's this one time I told you that I was really falling apart, but guess what? You laughed it off like it was a joke. You always take everything about me as a joke.”
This was the first time I had ever seen Sera cry so much and even complain, it made me stand there stunned and at a loss of what to say, for a moment. "Cut the crap, Sera, you don't get the right to make me the villain here, blaming it all on me.” My voice came out barely a whisper. “I get that I over look you this past few days when you needed me the most and I'm so sorry for that, but if you had just shout it to my face about aunty's health, I would have done something even though I'm not financial stable as I was before, but I would have help.
"And here's something you misinterpreted, you say I was doing all this for myself but have you forgotten everytime I blabber about my problems? At the end I always say — "I'm doing this for us.” I took one step closer with each word I said. "The engagement I planned to cancel for us to be together. The company I plan to get it back for us. School, I planned to study hard to know how to run the company better, FOR US. So tell me when was I being selfish here, when I was planning for us, for our future!!”
That's the truth I was doing all this for us, and I won't butter up myself because I did noticed when Sera looked troubled at times, but I didn't had the guts to ask because I was scared of what she might ask for, but no matter what, if by any slightest chance I got to know that her mom wasn't well, I would help the best way I can.
She turned her face the other way when she couldn't look at me anymore. “It doesn't matter anymore Satella, mom's treatment has already been taken care off."
“Let me guess, by him."
“Yes." She didn't even wait a second before answering. "So I beg you delete whatever evidence you have on your phone, I don't want any more problems, I just want to leave with my family happily right now, please just do it for me.”
She turned and picked up her clothes and was walking to the bathroom, like the case had already been closed. If it had been before then I would have listened to her but….
“Where, you straight from the start?"
My question made her paused mid step. Her silence was killing me. Then she slowly turned towards me and put her hands on her knees and bowed.
“I’m sorry Satella, but I never loved you as my partner, I got close to you because I needed something from you, I'm so sorry and yes I'm straight.”
My legs nearly failed me, as a terrible headache starts building up. She's straight. She never loved me. That's all I could hear. I laughed bitterly. "I don't believe you, I won't believe you, what we shared was real, he forced you to say those words right!”
My vision blurred with anger, I jerked towards Lucas, but Sera stepped in front of me. "Stop being so stubborn,” she said coldly. “Just do what he f*****g says and let's ends this.”
I couldn't help but laugh in disbelief. "And here you are calling me selfish, when YOU ARE THE SELFISH ONE." I said slowly to her ear. “After you have getting what you want, you don't care what happens to me next. You're just trying to save your own skin and leave me to the wolves."
Her eyes widened but I didn't care, not anymore. I stood up straighter, decision made. “I owe you nothing nor do I have to do as you say or want. After all, we are done.”
I turned towards Lucas, but paused because his facial expression right now was giving me the creeps. “And why are you looking at me like that?" I asked him.
“Say, Satella, let me offer you this. I will call off the engagement." My eyes widened in surprise and hope but his next words shattered it all. “In exchange, spend the night with me. You looked so hot just now and this dress compliments it all, I want to take it off. So spend the night with me, I will call off the engagement and still help your family, nice deal right."
“You f*****g deranged, shameless manwhore psycho!" I cursed while my body shook with anger and disgust. “I will never, I mean NEVER let you touch me, not in your entire life, and definitely not through this engagement.”
"And how are you going to do that, you—you think that thing, you call proof can save you, or you think because your mother is so against adultery that gives you the confidence, but news flash. Your family needs my family's help, without our help then your company is gone, and even if you post that, it will be brought down within seconds, but yours will be a different scenario. so stop thinking that there's a f*****g way out for you!!”
Damn it, my jaw clenched so tight that it hurts. He's right, I was so focused on the sweet win that I overlooked this crucial gap.
"Go f**k yourself.” You hear me Lucas "Go f**k yourself!!”
He sighed and scratched the back of his hair. "Well, I tried Sera, but your ex-girlfriend is just so stubborn."
“But—."
Lucas cuts Sera off with a dismissive wave. “She left me no choice but to use the hard way." Guards!!”
Before I knew it two guards rushed into the room, I was surprised because I didn't see any guards in the building when I first came.
"Let me go, I said let me go.” I struggled as they both held one of my hands.
"Bring me her phone.” Lucas commands one.
I struggled but wasn't strong enough. My phone was taken away from my hand, I didn't know what else to do and felt tired, like it's over.
The next thing I heard was a glass shattering sound. I raised my head and saw Sera, holding my phone and the guard on the floor with blood flowing from the side of his head.
"S-Sera.” I called out her name blankly.
"What the hell are you doing, Sera.” Lucas yelled. I turned and looked at him, then to the guard on the floor and lastly to the other guard holding my hand.
Without thinking I stepped hard on the guard foot with my heels. He freed my hands, and screamed in pain.
“Satella!, catch." Sera threw the phone at me and I looked up to catch it, which I did but before I could turn back. Sera stood there, she looked at me and muttered something and then locked the door from the inside.
I stood outside for a moment trying to understand what just happened, then I remembered Sera was still inside. "Sera open the door, come on open the door sera.”
"I'm sorry for using you Satella and I hope you can forgive me." I heard her voice from the inside. “Please run and do what you need to do, he won't hurt me.”
Before I could say another word I heard Lucas yelled to the guards. “What the hell are you two doing, get that b***h away from the door and open it, tear it down if you have to!!"
I couldn't wai
t anymore, because the door was getting hit by the guards, so I ran before it became too late.
