The dinging sound of the elevator startled me, almost making me jump out of my thoughts. I was mad at myself for feeling so incompetent, but then again what's life without insecurities. I wrapped my arms around myself like a warm blanket as I walked back to my room. I was gonna change back into my original clothes, find Grayson...I mean alpha Grayson and get out of here, back to my usual shitty but normal life. I opened the door to my room, my eyes looking at the floor and feeling like a drowned cat. "Oh i didn't expect you to be back so soon" a voice exclaimed in surprise. "Holy f**k!" I said startled, my heart had jumped into my throat. "Sorry I didn't mean to scare you" the man said, dropping a couple files on my bed "your new boss wants you to study them" I couldn't tell how I was supposed to feel or react in this situation. I was clearly a guest here but I had no idea who this man was. My mind flew over what he just said and focused on the fact that I had no idea who he was. "Who are you?" I asked He gave a sheepish smile "sorry I didn't introduce myself, you'll think I would have gotten used to it by now" he cracked a smile, stretching out his hand "I'm beta Viktor" I took his hand, but I still felt unsure. Was I supposed to know who beta Viktor was? Was that like a werewolf guidebook 101? And who names their kid beta! "I'm yasmine's father and alpha Grayson's second in command" he quickly added noticing that I didn't know who he was. My shoulders visibly relaxed "oh thank God" I let out a sigh of relief "I thought you were some werewolf serial killer or something " that means beta is a title, just like alpha Yasmine must look like her mother because the only thing she shared with her father was the same eye color. Their eyes have thesame warm glint in it when they smile. while jazzy had blond hair, Viktor had brown coloured hair. Maybe the whole invasion of someone's privacy could be added to the list of similarities but that was it. "That's good to hear" he said with a smile "What's good to hear?" I quirked a perfectly arched brow in confusion. He chuckled "you mentioned werewolves so I'm taking that as a sign that Yasmine has told you everything" he said I nodded my head and tucked a strand of my hair behind my ear suddenly feeling uncomfortable. I wasn't gonna tell him that I just had an argument with his daughter. "Yeah she did. She told me everything" I said, but it came out harsher than I intended it to. "I'm sorry I didn't mean to sound so rude" I apologized suddenly realizing that I was talking with her father. He chuckled, it sounded warm just like jazzy's laugh. I guess genes do go beyond physical looks, should have paid attention in biology class. "You remind me of someone" he said with cheeky amusement "Who?" I asked His eyes became darker as he spoke, holding an unspoken sadness "a very good friend" he said I didn't inquire further. Some people have stories they would rather not share, especially to people they just met. "Why are you back so soon? Didn't you enjoy the tour?" He asked with a curious stare "Yasmine was going on and on about how excited she was on giving you a tour of the place" I paused long enough to meet his curious gaze. My mind kept reeling from telling him my decision or asking him for directions to get to alpha Grayson and then tell him. But then..... "I quit" I blurted out "What!" All the humor in his expression fled "I said I quit" I said softly. I didn't want to seem ungrateful but yet I wanted to sound confident in my decision. "I heard you the first time Isla" his hand rested on his waist, his brows were pinched together. "I thought you already accepted the deal, why are you backing out now?" He was bewildered and confused "Well it would have helped if you had told me what kind of company I was gonna work for" I said "Wait let me get this straight" he held out his hand in the air "you're okay with working with werewolves that could literally tear you apart, but you're not okay with working with a rich guy and for a million dollar company" his expression was stoic but his tone had a questioning and mocking edge to it. My lips parted slightly in surprise "wow! You make me sound dumb" "No one is dumb Isla, they just lack knowledge. But that's besides the point" "The point is that I don't want people to think that I had to sleep my way to the top. G-Blacke is a big company and a girl with my qualifications would never get that job. You know it, I know it and I'm sure as hell everyone knows it" I was a few octaves away from yelling. His expression softened "Isla that's not a problem okay" he strode forward but I moved back instinctively. "It's a problem to me." A tear slid down my face and all I could do was wipe it with the back of my palm. Dammit Isla, you weren't supposed to cry today. Why was I even crying anyways. Gosh! Stupid hormones. "I promise you that no one is gonna question you're competence because you're smart. I went through your files and you were the top of your class." "That doesn't mean I'm qualified Viktor. I can't handle another moment where I have to prove to people that I'm not a f**k girl. If I could be reborn ugly then I would take it" I said People call it "pretty privileges" but I called it a "nightmare". My looks had never gotten me anything good, everyone just seems to automatically believe that everything I had was gotten through other means. But in reality, I had nothing. "I would burn them to the ground if they utter a vile word against you" Grayson growled behind me like an animal ready to strike A bolt of fear lanced through my body as the fine hairs on my arm rose. Did he hear everything I had said?
